Thanks guys, the issue was the USB switch at the back of the unit. It had to be set to ‘Thru to PC’. That link was also helpful Vintage, I spent ages searching for something like it yesterday to no avail so definitely appreciated it…! After a break from vinyl of about 3 years it feels good to stroke some wax once again ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanks Vintage, that would certainly explain the discounted sale price of the Vestax gear at Store DJ here in Australia…! If the VCI-380 will not or cannot get a DVS firmware upgrade then Santa will be bringing me the Denon 6000mk2 as I want as little as possible to set up (i.e. no separate DVS box bobScience).

I have a feeling my DDJ-SX will be relegated to studio status only if what you (and everyone else I have read up on) say is true about the Denon being perfect for a mobile DJ…

    Good feedback guys, much appreciated.

Thanks for the input here guys. I reckon I should just set the Mackie’s up on separate stands next to the two satellite tops from the Impact. As Terry suggests I would run the Mackies off the throughput channels of the Impact sub. I would probably not even have the Mackie’s turned up but just have them set up just in case. If I did need extra volume then I could simply walk 5 meters in each direction and turn up the volume on the Mackies… This avoids the need for a small PA mixer and still allows use of the mic (I think !!!). It also gives me peace of mind if, in the worse case scenario, the Impact failed.

    Thanks Terry,

I can run the Mackies from the Impact sub (just tried it) but going on what you said, I think I will just leave them in the car as back up as the LUCAS PA should be enough ๐Ÿ™‚

I did a party for about 100 people outdoors last weekend and although the Impact was up to near full output, everyone seemed happy enough with the sound…

    Cheers!

Strongly recommend the DDJ-SX. I have had one now for 18months. It was my first digital controller and I won’t be going back to Vinyl. Also, I haven’t felt the need to upgrade as the SX does more than I need it to… I reckon you will be upgrading in less than 12 months but you will probably benefit from starting small… Good luck!

Thanks for taking the trouble to help me with this one, +4dB it is then!

Also, I should add that I run XLR cables from my DDJ-SX to the inputs on the subwoofer and then Speakon connectors from the sub to the satellite speakers…

Thanks Vintage but are you sure? The user manual has the following to say:

This switch boosts input sensitivity. Setting it to -6 dB rather than the standard +4 dB setting boosts the input level 10 dB. For the widest dynamic range in live applications, we recommend setting the switch to +4 dB. Recommendation: Using a professionell mixer, the input sensitivity should be set to +4 dB. This lets you take advantage of the systemโ€™s full dynamic range and helps to avoid system overloads. Using a signal with a lower output level the input sensitivity should be set to -6 dB.

Is my DDJ-SX considered to be a ‘professionell mixer’? Does the DDJ-SX have a ‘lower output level’ than +4dB? Obviously as a mobile DJ I want maximum volume but not if it risks system overloads!

Thanks for the advice. I visited Store DJ here in Australia the other day and had a good blast with many different subs and one thing I am certain about is the Mackie HD1801 is way too big / heavy for me coming in at 48kg. Shame because it was on sale!

I liked the HD1501 but obviously it was nowhere near as powerful. The QSC KW181 was roughly the same size / weight as the larger Mackie but almost twice the price.

I guess I have to chose between hoping to find a discounted QSC or failing that, having less volume with the HD1501 which I might hire once to see if it will suit my purposes or not…

Gary Numan eh? I always liked ‘Cars’ but then music preference is so subjective!

Those old school tunes were/are killer, as was the whole scene, but its fair to say i’ve mellowed quite a bit since then – check out a recent mix i did with some smooth tunes: https://soundcloud.com/dj-marcel-7/marcel-4
