Well, I can speak to the Reloop Digital Jockey – I’ve had one for about 4 months now. I really don’t have any complaints other than one, but don’t know if it’s a software issue. The one thing w/ the reloop that I’ve found is that the support for it is basically non existent. I have had trouble twice now with it just ‘crashing’ to where my comp doesn’t recognize the midi controller. The sound still goes through software wise, but I have to actually restart my computer to fix it. It has done this twice, and both times when I was recording. When I’m not recording I haven’t had any problems…
Other than that, I haven’t had any issues with it. It seems solid, has good mapping to Traktor, and doesn’t have a ‘cheap’ look to it. Mostly metal construction and good response on the jogs.
That being said, I am definitely ready for an upgrade. The main reason is the outputs. Now that I’m starting to get real gigs and play on larger sound systems, the one set of RCAs just isn’t cutting it anymore. I will probably stick w/ this set up for the rest of the year and after the holidays start picking out and saving up for a new controller. For what you are looking to do, I think the Reloop would work well though.

They try to make them all about the young, hot club chicks…so maybe some of them come out if they have enough freebies, but really then loads of guys show up hoping to score with some of those women. Some even go further into the “really for guys” by having a hot body competition or something.

The problem with that logic is it doesn’t appeal to normal women. The girls who work at the office, maybe work out, but don’t run out dressed as a hooker to go clubbing won’t come out to those events. They know it’s a meat market and they’ll be surrounded by drunk horny guys.

I’ve seen some true ladies nights that went away from the idea of guy-centric. In fact, they saw it as a sign of success when many guys would not come because it was so girl-centric.

    1. The venue had a good special on martinis and any other drinks girls normally order.
    2. The venue put chick flicks or Sex and the City on the TVs…no sports.
    3. The DJs pandered to women. They played music girls liked, even if guys hated it.
    4. They made deals with local nail salons to come out, set up stations in the booths, and sell on-the-spot manicures.
    5. Sometimes they brought out a masseuse and had massages for the women.
    6. Giveaways/contests ended up being spa packages or gift certificates to salons or boutiques.

It’s clear why the place was packed with women.

How you can do that is to network with local businesses and thus get these things. Find a nail salon looking to advertise and make some extra money. Find a boutique or salon or spa who wants to advertise and will give you a prize to give away. Find DJs who will play for the women and not have issue with any cheesy pop music.
Make it about the girls…not a night for guys to drool over attention whores.

GREAT points for sure. The playlist I have together is definitely geared toward the women and I’m going to get a notepad w/ pen at the booth for the women to write down requests on which I thought would be a good idea. I like the ideas of the salon / boutique gift certificates as well. This venue doesn’t really have a spot that would work well for the nail salon to come out w/ a station, but we are planning on doing the girly drink specials already too.

I guess my main question is how would I brand myself to where after the night, the people that came would remember ‘me’. Obviously playing the right music that they want to hear is huge, but is giving something away cheesy or lame? How would I brand it to where they remember “DJ Und3rCov3r” versus just “the DJ” that was there last night.

    Any thoughts?

FYI I work in the advertising and design industry and I use the Apple program Pages for all of my basic designs like this. It’s really powerful and simple to use. It’s a hybrid word processor and graphics program. Illustrator and photoshop
are overkill for what you want to do. It also comes with a bunch of templates that you can modify to create your own.

Yeah, I’ve seen the pages program, I’ll have to check it out closer for sure.

First gig was two weeks ago and it was a charity fundraiser with about 200 people. My first ‘real’ paid gig is this coming Friday at a night club and will be $100 plus free drinks.

I dont use mac however so i dont know how its done on a mac.

On PC you can do 2 different ways, drag the songs into a playlist within itunes, and then refresh your itunes library in Traktor

Or option 2 is to use the right window where it shows your playlist and navigate to your harddrive then to were you download music and then hit refresh.

Thanks so much, not sure how I missed right clicking and hitting refresh as that did the trick! Thanks again!

It is an online photoshop, no downloads, no installs, and as it doesnt have all of the photoshop features, it is much simpler to use 🙂
    Hope it was of help.

Oh, and 100% free. And if you create an account (also free) you get like an online folder where you can save your works. You can also save them on your pc.

Definitely much easier for sure, but I still don’t think I am cut out to do this crap. Freakin frustrating 🙁 Will try and find someone that can help me / make something up for me I suppose…crappy. 🙁

Maybe that’s where I’m missing this. I haven’t seen the refresh spot, I’ll have to look for that when I get home later and try that! Where is the refresh button on your pc version?

If they know your face and know you around the venue, chances are when they need someone to fill in, or a new position opens up they will most likely pick the person they know more as a person.

This is exactly what I did. Went to the club often, got to know the owners very well. Went to Vegas with one of them and am now going to be opening for their main DJs on some Saturday nights to start to get a following and then play the main Sat night sets. Be patient, practice, practice, practice, and yeah, practice too 🙂

Congrats! I totally know how how the first gig nerves can be. I actually played my first “big” event last night with about 200 people at a large halloween fundraiser. About 1.5hrs into my set my midi controller completely stopped responding. My music was still playing through the controller because the soundcard is internal. Luckily it was right when the MC was doing announcements for games and such. I was able to swap out my RCAs and plug in my iPhone backup in so I could restart and barely had a hickup. Congrats on getting what sounds like a regular gig!

Bought the parts and started to put it together to discover I need additional 3 inch bolts from Home Depot. Well it’s together and I like it…

Awesome set up. I think this is probably the route that I will end up going as well. Very clean looking and quite functional as well.

I really like my Reloop Digital Jockey 2ie. Has a good solid feel w/ the metal construction, has good effects control, easy looping, and no complaints on the jog wheels. Just my .02

Agree totally. At a house party yeah, but this was the same party that I put on a pre recorded 30 min mix so I could go mingle in the middle of my set, lost track of time and then…the music stopped…and I was like, ummm…my bad haha – good thing it was a large group of my friends. DJing a fairly large Halloween Party (about 200 people) and you can guarantee that I’ll have water or redbull w/ me 🙂

Aggregate set up is to tie the in built sound cards of the CDJs together to make one sound card. However, as they have a 900nexus mixer you may not need to as this also has a sound card and is also midi.
I have the CDJ900 but use windows and it was just plug and play but I don’t use Traktor anymore. Another option you have is to download a copy of RekordBox from PIoneers web site, analyse your music, make some playlist then put the on a USB drive. No need for the mac just take the drive and plug into on of the decks and it’ll be share across the link. Easier than taking you’re mac. Head over to the Pioneer DJ Forum for more info on aggregate set up for your mac. You’ll love the 900s and nexus mixer don’t miss the chance to use them.

I have downloaded the RekordBox program and toyed with it a bit. Good to know about just making a play list on there. I have a 32gb thumb drive that would be perfect for that. I’ll probably do that and then bring my Mac as well and set up the aggregate so I am familiar with both. So w/ the Nexus mixer, I would be plugging that mixer into my Mac and controlling Traktor with it also? Thanks for yer help BooGie.
