When mixing hip hop, i tend to loop a whole bunch, making the track mix friendly. But i always keep in mind, that if there’s a track i really want to play but it just ‘doesn’t fit’ then i put it aside, cuz chances are theres gna be a later tune i can easily mix it into. Just like all genres, study your library. KNOW where ‘everything’ is. Have your tunes pre-prepped if you need to…i.e. cues, cues to loops.buildups.outros..etc… Here’s a hiphop demo i put together, notice i jumped to certain spots in the song to make it ‘mixable’, or i looped certain lyrics.. =]

Varies from situation to situation. There are a lot of variables you can take into account [location, day of the week, demographic, even the weather]
There is one thing that i feel is very important no matter what the variables are… Be Entertaining No Matter What. That is, have fun and show you are having fun. People do tend to feed off a DJs vibe. Throw a jesus pose =P

I for one am not a supporter of the ‘auto-sync’ . However, i dont give a damn who uses it…pro or bedroom. The way i see it….
*If you are doing something dope with the time you are saving with the dumb button, then props to ya. =D .
*I am totally against a ‘rookie’ DJ ever laying hands on it.
*For ‘veteran’ DJs, if they’ve lasted THIS long [successfully], you don’t need to prove to me you can beatmatch…just put on a damn good show for me 😀 .
*A tool is a tool..whether or not I support it or not.
*BUT, I do think it needs to disappear =] .

Sure at first when you’re starting out your main focus is not to trainwreck but once you’ve got that down and you’re mixing smoothly, your brain shifts to a whole different style of thinking. The technique itself becomes second-nature and your goal is “how do I make this track sound even better?”

I couldn’t have put it better myself. Ima answer this with Your answer :p

IMO, Good DJs stick to the basics, ‘this beatmatches with this’ ‘the intro to this house tune mixes well with the outro of that house tune’ ..etc… A good DJ Thinks up the basics, ‘128bpm….ok now i need another 128bpm tune’
a great DJ thinks outside the box. ‘How would i mix these two songs in a studio’ ‘how can i make these two tracks sound like they are Ment to be mixed this way’

    Thoughts? =D

Remember Part 13 of that How to Succeed at DJing series. Build something. Go on your college radio or something and do a trance show. Start podcasting, blogging, throw events, whatever. Build it to the point where you can get a crowd out.

In this case, I say take a chance…but if it blows up in your face, then you know what your scene likes.

    +1 =]

Sounds like a hit or miss situation. I think its safe to say everyone is going to say go with your gut/heart.
I personally would approach it like this: the event is a showcase, so im going to showcase what I’m good at. =] . I would, however, also recommend that you take into consideration that you are there to Entertain. So throw a few familiar sounds in there. I did a “showcase” style event a few months ago..i was asked to “do me”..but after seeing the first few DJs “do them”, i noticed the crowd was pretty tired of hearing EDM, so i changed it up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOuzoYsTu5s&feature=channel_video_title
Final word; Stick to what You do, but do take your crowd into consideration.

When i lay down a demo, i typically have a target audience in mind.
I do mobile, clubs, and some online ‘gigs’. Each has their own “genre” or approach.
e.i…for Mobile gigs, i keep it basic. I lay down simple mixes and stay within the genre(s) the client(s) would like. My area, Los Angeles, is usually all Top40s and/or HipHop. When it comes to club and online stuff, im “known for” laying down mostly House or EDM stuff.
So MY answer; it depends on the situation, my target audience, and/or what im trying to accomplish. =]
I Rarely put down a mix where i mash it all into one, because chances are you are going to miss a lot of people within the first 5minutes, before you get to the point that rings THEIR specific ear.

OLD: No more bookshelf room to stash LPs
NEW: No more cups to stash Thumb Drives

OLD: Not a big enough bag to carry LPs
NEW: Not a small enough bag to carry ScratchLive

    OLD: Not enough outlets
    NEW: Not enough USB Hubs

The most annoying for me, are the ones that say one of the following:
“can you play shuffle music” “can you play some DJ Blend” “can you play techno” and my favorite “do you have any David Guetta or Deamau5”
    *cringe*
