Dragging this back up in order to possibly help someone else out.

after much deliberation, I plumped for the LD systems Dave G3 18’s as my local dealer could source them for just £900! (1k with transport bags/board/straps).

VERY risky purchase buying these after only hearing the 12’s in operation, but for the money, I figured if it didn’t live up to expectations, it would do as a secondary fall back set….but I have to say, I’m totally blown away!.

Sure, they probably aren’t up there with the mainstream brands (or maybe they are!) but I got to my venue, set everything halfway and proceeded to dump a modern housey tune through them……I have to say, I was completely and utterly shocked at the power coming from such a compact set-up (18″sub, 10″ tops). The sheer belt of sound coming from those tops without an erk of mess or distortion (200w rms) was really pleasant. I wound it up a bit further and tweaked the bass to the right hand side of the pot and still, this thing would not give in….obviously this was an empty room, so the real test would be with the 150 guests filling the gaps.

I ran the system for around 5 hours, playing all genres and despite standing behind, the “bounceback” you get from people dancing in front of them sounded crispy and undistorted (not that I abuse volume levels anyway) – I took a couple of sneaky subtle wanders out into the room and had a listen, so so impressed!.

SO anyway, if there is anyone looking for a compact yet powerful little system for under a grand….you’d do well to check these out.

Echo what Vintage says, the thought of modular is great…..its the function of one-unit-does-all that really appeals. nonetheless, good advice!

I looked in to the new Macbook to replace my recently sold 17″mbp but I really struggled to see its attraction.

its £1049 in its most basic guise with 128gb of flash storage, a 12″ retina display and an intel core M 1.1ghz processor and that one USB-c port (factor in another 80 quid to get ONE more usb slot if you buy apples crap-adapter)

for £50 less , you get a pro,, same flash storage (or £150 more for 256gb flash) larger 13″ retina display and an intel i5 2.7ghz processor – bung in an extre 2 USB3 slots and 2 Thunderbolt ports…..

    its a no brainer!

the macbook is just apple being flashy with ultra thin casing and some clever marketing to make it look like its sh!t doesn’t stink

    get it swapped lad 🙂

Thanks for that Vintage, its clear you have a wealth of experience behind you, nice to know 🙂

Still tempted in the LD systems pack, having been the only product of this ilk that I have heard…….but theres something still niggling inside that says “just get a nice EV system”…….damn you brain!

@DJVIntage – that’s some great advice there, appreciate it.

I think i summarised my own wants in my original post…..I loved the SX (i gave up DJ’ing for the 43rd time and sold it) I MUCH prefer Serato over Trakturd and I could budget an SZ….just….with some serious arm twisting

My post really was about investing (again) all of that money in something that is “old” within months – I get where you are coming from with a world of ever evolving technology and that you can never really be at the forefront for any more than 3 months these days – I was merely fishing to see if anyone knew of anything new so that I didn’t sit there going Doh!

I tired the MC6K a while back, its good!….but didn’t really set my nipples on fire.

@Kingofsnake – I did, I ended up patching in with the RJ45…..but then it defeats the object of having a standalone unit…..and unfortunately it lost 2 channels and a better array of control over the SX / SZ, because it was too busy being its own little special thing.

thanks for the reply……but……when i bought the SX, the bastards bought out an SX2, sure the update to utilise flip, but it was still an update and would still effect the resale should it need to be resold (which in my case is always) :D.

A.D…..pretty sure if you interact with your audience, they wouldn’t give two (swear words) if you were SYNC’ing or not, as long as the tunes were right 😉

grab yourself a label machine, print out stickers for each assigned key on your keyboard (cue, play etc), hey presto, a cheap starter controller with no external box…….you will however, be limited to a one channel output….unless you add a cheapy 2/4 channel USB soundcard (which I’ve never used, so couldn’t give any technical advice)

I was a Windows laptop performer for many years, until that is, a skipping and grinding to a halt windows laptop was making me look rather stupid (i know, that’s not hard)

and yes, I’m going to sound like an “apple fanboy”……but for the last 3 years, I’ve used a macbook pro, with an SSD replacement in the optical bay as above and it has NEVER failed me…

In fact, one night, I ran Serato, ADJ’s MyDMX2 software running several effects AND kJams karaoke software with a lot of libary……not once did it cry or moan that it had insufficient this or insufficient that, or just randomly blue screen cos it felt like it.

I’m upgrading to a new MBP in the next few weeks…..and yes, it will cost much more than a similarly specced Windows laptop…..but i know it will do the job and not fall over mid-performace…….I also know that it will retain its value when i upgrade and not be worth £5 or a door wedge which the winblows laptop will.

get what you pay for 😉

    Thanks for the reply!.

I like the idea of filling the sound, but whilst I’m an absolute advocate of sound quality, portability is an necessity.

I’m yet to hear anything by HK audio and I did do some research into the Nano’s…..but that sub….it just looks like a buskers tool, i do think that at some of my venues, that little thing is going to struggle when attacked by modern bass rich audio. but again, my comments are obviously unfounded as I haven’t heard them….but my rule of thumb would always be “small sub, small sound” ?

Yes, I have heard (and heard) of Proel, demoed a couple of active 12 tops about 6 months ago. I will look in to the LT812’s

    Thanks again

surely you would be better off with some semi decent PC speakers than that……that……thing.

but if you want to “perform” in front people, you’ll need something much bigger….unless your audience is a small family of field mice, of course 🙂
