Ahhhh.. thanks guys. so clearing the floor is a good thing since obviously you want to sell alcohol to people as well as give them a chance to rest. Got it. So I guess a better, (much albeit more advanced question), is when do you know to give people a break assuming you have been rocking the party?

    @DJ
vintage – good tip man.. thanks.. they can leave the floor, but you still gotta control them when they’re relaxing haha.. DJs ARE PUPPETEERS! haha (hey! did I say you could sit? get up and dance!)

Hey thanks for the positive words guys!

    @Dj
Vintage – Hey, I gotta visualize right? haha.

Well, I decided to try and do a proper deep house mini-mix so tried researching influential house records as well as current ones so here it goes. It’s for a lounge I’m trying to get a gig at so I also included the lounge songs some of you guys had recommended as well as my personal favorites near the end.

Hey thanks Guy! I wish I had read your post before finalizing my first mini-mix here:

    http://www.digitaldjtips.com/topic/thanks-digital-dj-tips-first-mini-mix-ever/

But I’ll keep those ideas for a future mix. If you have any mixes online that have an example of that MAIN focus, could I check it out? It sounds really cool.

    Thanks

Hey Jesse, I’m in a very similar situation to you considering those very same controllers/ipad option so will just add my two cents. Don’t forget that Traktor has the Remix decks so if you wanted to incorporate Ableton like / Launchpad sample stuff in your set, you could do that in the future whereas with djay, you can’t. I use djay almost everyday so am also trying to figure out my setup as well (it’s 6am sunday morning where I am, haha, so yeah, I’m stressing over it as well)

Good luck and let us know what you choose (and why?)

Thanks Terry! As always, thank you for your wise words of wisdom.

Haha at the CDJ comment 😉

The reason I asked about the Launchpad and Akai APC is I recently just found out about this guy:

Where he uses only the APC and a computer and has played many large festivals and venues. While I’m not at that level, I’m curious how someone with his setup prepares for the different venues. It also seems like he has a million cue points to mix so many genres and songs so quickly that I couldn’t even conceive it being possible on anything not computer related.

I’d double check with the specific airline for their specific policy. I’ve been able to bring my guitar on some airlines whereas others, NOT. Same thing with my dog, some airlines, yes, some no or rather have very strict guidelines.

I’ve also been able to beg and plead for my guitar to be brought on a plane but it’s a lot of energy and hassle to rely on that when it might be easier to just find out the specific policy and adhere to that. Airport employees are just workers so they’re just following rules so as long as you follow their rules, you’re good.

Overall, sounded good to me. I wanted to make a comment on your first transition but for some reason it says “due to licensing restrictions, it’s not possible to seek backwards” Basically, I’m no expert but I felt it was a little abrupt, not too much, but maybe let it build up a bit more? But I could imagine chilling in a big stadium listening to this while drinking a beer. Good job man! Good luck

Here are my two cents. Not sure how familiar you are with Ableton so if it comes off sounding simplistic and obvious, apologies in advance.

If any of the songs you are trying to remix have live drums, learn to use the warp markers throughout the song to make them consistent so that they line up and are synced to the BPM so for example, if you were to play a 4 to the floor house beat behind a Nirvana/Led Zeppelin song, they’d match up and wouldn’t drift. This would be a non-issue if all of the songs you’re remixed have electronic beats.

In arrangement view (hit Tab key on Apple to switch from Session to Arrangement view), you can drag your song file there. And what’s convenient about Ableton vs software such as Audacity is instead of slicing and dicing the part you want to repeat, here, you can just drag the file shorter to the exact part you want. So let’s say you wanted to extend the intro four times. Just shorten the track to that intro part, then duplicate (CMD D) four times. I’m sure there are other ways to do this but I’m used to using Ableton this way. Where instead of making permanent edits, I just drag the file to whatever edit size I want.

As I type this, I know there’s probably a way to set cue points on the waveform and maybe just trigger those cue points similar to how Serato Flip does it (sorry, I don’t have Serato but I’ve seen tutorials) so if you’re used to that workflow, maybe do a search on setting cue points in Ableton as that might be another option for you.

    Hope this helps!

@DieverseBeatz – Yes, this has been very helpful to me. What’s hard is just finding the wave files for many songs has been difficult for me, then to go through the hassle of loading them up into iTunes. Or at least it’s a hassle for me as opposed to just buying it from iTunes and it’s already loaded up.

Does anybody have an opinion on sticking iTunes songs (m4a) into Platinum Notes? Is that a decent workflow?

Or sticking iTunes songs into Audacity to make DJ Edits, then into Platinum Notes?

Thought I’d bump this thread as I am in process of setting up my first playlist for a potential gig and tried downloading the Beatunes trial to give it a go. Bar manager wanted a loungey vibe so I purchased about 10 new tracks as a start that I felt had a good chill loungey vibe and figured I’d stick em into Beatunes to see what it said.

I chose the song that I liked the most as my seed and what’s funny is that all the results Beatunes gave me for a potential playlist were hip hop songs, haha. So it went from this jazzy, piano vibe with a beat to Big Pun, 50 cent and 2pac. But I guess what’s good about it is it’s just another tool, as Phil said, to learn more about your library which opened my eyes to how much hip hop I have in my library in comparison to loungey jazz music.

It also had these transition icons that seemed helpful like “incompatible key change” and “change of decade” but not sure how practical I would need this on a regular basis.

It also has the key detection but have no idea how it compares to Mixed In Key or Keyfinder.

And while I like the color labels, seems redundant if a good dj is supposed to know his tunes inside and out along with sticking cue points in the different sections, right?

@Caravel – Hey thanks man! I actually bought the first two songs off that compilation so will put that in my playlist.

As for the OCD thing, for some reason I think that might be a good trait to have in DJ’ing, haha. Maybe? As for the mashups, maybe when I’m as good as you but if you reference the other mashup thread, I think I might just keep it simple at first before trying to get fancy, especially if I have to play for a few hours.

Since we’re on the topic, when you do mashups, doesn’t that get a little complicated because you’re basically playing the one instrumental on one deck with the vocal acapella on the other. But how do you mix out of that? Are you basically just playing one or two verses of the acapella, then switching out that vocal track with the next song? Or are you keeping that acapella going while replacing the instrumental song with the next song that you’ll mix to which will have the acapella for the transition, then fade that out?

    Thanks in advance!

Hey man, hopefully Phil and some of the other more experienced cats like Terry 42 and DJ Vintage chime in.

Thought I’d just reply to say hang in there and use every experience, whether good or bad, as a way of sharpening your game, streamlining your shit, etc. Things happen for a reason. This will sound cliche but it’s true.

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

I’m in a somewhat similar but opposite situation in that I’m a fairly new DJ but have been playing for over a decade in live bands. I went through something similar to your experience in that I put my heart and soul into every band/project I played in and when it didn’t take off (at least financially to support us) I also doubted myself, my passion, my purpose. But it also was a good experience because it showed me that while I was strong in certain areas (playing guitar, writing, producing female vocals), I was weak in others (marketing, networking, making songs easily mixable for DJs to remix, knowing your target audience/experience for them)

It’s a beautiful thing to express yourself and do something for art, but for business, you’ve got to be on point and have every avenue handled. Just from the short time I’ve been on this forum, I’ve learned that one has to balance being a commodity and being an artist. So from that perspective, did you really know your “market value” when things didn’t work out with the old owner? Was there a way things could’ve been worked out so that it was a win/win situation? There’s a really good book called 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey where he advocates “seek first to understand, then to be understood” Maybe if you had tried to FIRST see things from the old owner’s perspective, he would’ve been willing to see things from your perspective and you both could’ve come to a resolution.

As for the new gig, maybe you should’ve gone the very first week you had on that Friday night to check out the vibe, NOT just the Thursday before. You know clubs can vary wildly from night to night so that’s part of your game that could’ve been handled better. I hope this isn’t coming across critical because I’ve fucked up way more times. One example is my old band brought all this gear (guitars, keyboards, effects pedals) only to have majority of it cut off due to electrical problems DURING THE SHOW, to which we had to end the night playing an acoustic set. But I could’ve gone earlier or even the previous day to scope out the logistics.

It’s kinda like dating. I’m recently out of a long term relationship and the very first date I went out on, I was able to bring my girl back to my place. But guess what? I don’t have a bed and didn’t have snacks/alcohol at home so instead of closing the deal, we ended up sitting on my floor, going out to Jack in the box, and me throwing up. Kinda diff topic but still related. You gotta handle the logistics of whatever you do in life, however small the detail because it’s those details that will help you succeed. That’s why you see me asking a million questions on these threads because I’m fortunate to have found very talented, cool, experienced DJs who’ll tell me their fuckups so I don’t have to make them.

To end on a positive note, I’m almost a decade older than you and I feel the youngest I have in years, even when I was your age, because I stay inspired and push myself to learn new things. (I also hook up with hotter girls than when I was younger but that’s a different story) You said you wanted to produce more, there are some great courses here on Digital DJ tips but even online. Dubspot and Future Music has a bunch of good free ones on Youtube. Also, something I’ve enjoyed doing is researching my fave DJs/artists to see what/how they produce and mix so these are all things that can keep you fresh and on top of your game.

I’m in California but if you need someone to help with online stuff for free provided that you hook me up with some crumbs when you do get paid, lemme know as I’m always looking to learn and your post just gave me additional insight into how the club game works. If it means anything, I’m going through the same thing right now just for a small time lounge in some suburbia neighborhood. I asked to DJ on their off nights and he asked me how many people could I bring, haha. So I offered a night for free and if he was happy, then we’d talk money. What’s funny is that during the 10 minutes I was speaking to him, this girl asked him to change the music to something more upbeat as they just came from another venue.

Good luck man! Stay strong and hang in there.
