The last poster is almost there, though Ean Golden lives in San Francisco or there abouts, but his blog DJ Tech Tools is all about Controllerism [more for the knowledge of other readers, as I guess you know that already as you’ve been into it a year ago]. There was a midi-fighter gathering in Berlin this article should help you get some names and contacts:

I’ve been looking into books recently too, I came across The Secrets of House Music Production, which is more focused on sub-genres of House rather than all styles of dance music.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Secrets-House-Music-Production/dp/0956446000/ref=pd_sim_b_2

I’m fairly adept at picking up software packages, but music theory is my weak point, so found books in these areas too:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Composition-Computer-Musicians-Michael-Hewitt/dp/1598638610/ref=pd_sim_b_3

    and
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Theory-Computer-Musicians-Michael-Hewitt/dp/1598635034/ref=pd_sim_b_1

However, going back to question about how long does it take to master, I think its always going to be an ongoing thing, I have a friend doing production for years and is technically competent but doesn’t finish track let alone release anything. On the other hand if you can be more goal orientated its better to finish a track, learn from it and do another one – which is what the pro’s do I guess.

For me I think there is a difference between getting the styleflip kind of rework and the Ean Golden performance enhancements parts like the arcade buttons and knobs etc I think I land on the latter side, but that’s my personal choice, each to their own 🙂

Both headphones have a different design in terms of how they sit on the ear (Senn’s) or around the ear (A&H XD-40). Your hubby will certainly have a preference, find out which if you can, as if he doesn’t like the Senns sitting on the ear it could turn out to be an expensive mistake. If he doesn’t know or you can’t ask – the A&H are likely to be a safer bet as they dont sit on the ear, they are also cheaper and so will suit as a very good second pair, which all DJ’s need as headphones are lost or damaged quite often.

On the latter though if he is okay with on ear headphones, Sennheiser have good parts availability and the cable is detachable, which is quite often the first thing to go as at some point or other the cable gets caught and it snags, on most other headphones it means at very least re-wiring from manufacturer or a new pair. With the senns you can get a new cable and plug it in again. The Sennheisers also seem to be the best rated for sound quality. But be careful which 25s you choose there are two, one with one band which is cheaper:
    http://www.sennheiser.co.uk/uk/home_en.nsf/root/private_headphones_dj-headphones_502103

The other with two bands, but has better sound, most people want this one, but it is more expensive:

Thanks for the input. I did have the internal mixer on, but having a second look at the manual I managed to find the right section on page 42 – its bizarrely with the crossfader now below the decks  Which means I’ve got a waste of screen space as rest of that row does not have anything apart from the crossfader which I dont need 😡 My guess is most new midi controllers feature cue vol and mix controls so they dont really need to be duplicated on screen – oh well.

Yep I like him and the rest of the Valerie Collective (Anoraak, Mintel Rose etc), its that whole retro-80s-synthpop style, my next mix will be somewhat in that direction 🙂

Looking at the Resident Advisor Top DJ list, it is evident a change is afoot from minimal/techno to slower deep house, nu-disco, retro sounds. DJ’s like Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones, Lee Foss et al

Having said that I still love techno/tech house – Sebastien Leger stands out well ahead for me as he keeps his set funky and interesting.

There is a five part guide on the blog (you can search the blog by scrolling to the bottom and you will find a search box there)

Here is the first part, you’ll get links to the other from there

I’m still on PS2, just love a bit of the old street fighter II and a bit of pro evo 5 from time to time. The game I play the most though is angry birds on my phone lol. I just like games which I can pick up and put down and not have to invest time learning stuff – also more fun when you come back from a nights clubbing and play something with your mates that has quick turn arounds, keeps the fun going with short attention spans lol

A repost of my blog comment as its relevant to this thread…

In the past what the big DJ’s were using is what the new starters aspired to. The big boys currently use CDJ 2000′s well out of the pocket for aspiring and even experienced users. Back in the day one could save up for technics and half decent mixer but saving for two CDJ2000′s in current economic climate is mission impossible.
As the new wave of DJ’s grow with the controllers that they can afford, I suspect we might see a flip in the game instead of tech filtering down, it will go up and become the norm and for that to happen the consolidation of the laptop and controller into an all in one unit will be crucial. I was thinking of getting a NI Kontrol S4, but I think I will wait it out now, next year by this time will be interesting – well worth a visit for BPM then I think.

Factor in a couple of hundred for a service and replacement of any worn items and those £200 decks dont look so cheap

The Stanton’s are looking the best way to go by a long chalk

A couple of hundred is unlikely, perhaps only in the most extreme and even that should be obvious to novice/price its being sold for. Technique in manchester say average service cost is around £35 – http://www.techniquerepairs.co.uk/index.html

Good to hear, you are finding some strength.
The second video for me was more about the message he had rather than his specific disability rather than to draw a comparison with mental illness.

    Keep cool, keep strong 🙂

    Hi Emma

I hope you are better today?
I have had some experiences of family with mental health problems, my uncle, my sister and now my niece, all different but I have learnt to accept things in different ways. It’s a subject that I find very hard as I’m quite a rational person and mental health issues are very hard for me to errm rationalise, but I just need to accept them and love them despite their issues not because of them, if you know what I mean.

Your story is an inspiration to us all, but perhaps you need that at this moment too?
I cam across quite an inspiring story this week, its a clip from Steve Jobs commencement speech – very touching and I hope people can find the time to watch it:

This is another one, that gets me everytime:

I think when I was younger it was one thing, I had less responsibilities in life and spending the best part of a day crate digging was do able back then. But now I’m too old for that, I prefer getting my DJ tunes online. I also think that some stores they did have very snobby assistants and they wont be missed at all – at one stage I just preferred to shop from HMV get what I wanted and back out again no pfaff and one of the local DJ’s worked there always gave me a discount, so much for the indy stores lol. I’d only go to a store now to pick up a vinyl lp of a band that I like, but this is becoming rarer because I now stream albums on spotify so not making it worth buying really.

Hi there, yes it is in the blog:
    http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2010/11/itunes-planning-dj-set/
    and see
    http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2010/10/organise-music-better-traktor/

Though do remember that when you you see the itunes playlists in traktor its read only so you can’t do edits there. Also traktor will not show the value for key in the key column – copy the playlist to traktor collection/playlist and they do appear. So get you key writing software to write to comments field too. I also group by camelot key notation to the favourites above the the browser in traktor.

😮 yet another mac v pc debate oh dear
I pressume you have looked on amazon, but want DJ specific advice. I was looking at external hard disks a year ago, I came to the conclusion to instead upgrade my laptop hard disk to 500gb 7200 rpm ie go larger and faster, also cheaper as you are just buying the drive. I felt that most external hard disks are much a like cheap and easy to break and mean more plugging in and out causing wear on my usb ports. Replacing your internal one means you can use the original as an external drive for backing up your key files – just buy the enclosure for something like £15, so it way better value for money.

However, if you do want to go for external drives I would recommend the lacie drives with firewire support, its faster than usb and they have metal casing which protects them:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/LaCie-Rugged-500GB-All-Terrain-USB2-0/dp/B001AGFUTO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1314202082&sr=8-3

Yep its pricey, but I’ve known many people with WD drives who have taken them travelling ending up not working.
