Wow! Great mix: right up my street! coincidentally, I just did a 2-part mix on there called ‘Disco Sucks: The Aftermath!’ but with more of a focus on boogie and jazz-funk. But really digging the early hip-hop stuff on your mix too. Really evokes the era: nice one! And the ‘post-disco’ disco is totally my bag. Would really be interested in how you got this concept together, it’s fascinating!

    Hi Daniel,

Kind of quick answer to this is yes there is. I’ve just been doing this myself over the past few weeks so can answer from my own (limited) experience. However, the first thing about this is that you are immediately confronted by the need to address copyright laws on the original tracks you either edit or mash-up. There are many on sites like Juno & Bandcamp however who may or may not have had clearance to use tracks, I find it hard to believe that every single edit has had clearance on there!

I personally use Legitmix for my edits/re-rubs/reworks/whatever. I have a lot of time for this way of doing it. It is (IMO) the only platform I’m aware of that attempts to pragmatically address the utter minefield that is copyright laws and DJ’ing/edits. However others on here may be able to signpost to others. Check it out at https://legitmix.com/. I’m still not 100% sure of how watertight this is, but it positions itself as a clean way of addressing copyright. The jist is that you submit an edit or mash up for others to buy, identifying the tracks you use in the mix. When someone wants to buy it, the Legitmix app (they have to download it) searches the buyers’ hard drive for the version of the track(s) used to create the mash-up or edit. If the buyer does not have it, they are directed to the US itunes store to buy it. Then Legitmix recreates the mash-up for the buyer. Bingo. You can choose how much to sell the tracks for (I personally have mine as free on there) so the buyer pays your ‘fee’ as well as the $0.99 or so the itunes track costs. I really like it personally, but I’ve hit snags on several occasions not being able to put tracks on there if the original is unavailable in the US itunes store, which is not infrequently. also, it is a faff having to download and use the app: I think there’s an argument that it’s a bit too tricky for buyers, might put them off. But again this is just my opinion looking at my stats on there. It takes about 5 minutes to complete purchase of a track from beginning to end once the app is on your PC or Mac.

So, Legitmix aside there are other places (as mentioned above) but you will be asked to confirm you hold copyright to the material you use before you can put them up for sale. You may be lucky and have agreements to use your tracks, I certainly don’t.

Hey Jake, I really like the stuff, have just followed you on SC. I like the minimal sound (that’s meant positively!): I am into throwback stuff and updating it, but like your tracks. I’m easing myself into trying to make my own…!

Cheers Bob! will check it out. Yep, Googled it but wasn’t sure what terms to use really. Tried some, with little success. so thought I’d try the horse’s mouth.

Just out of interest, why would you get shot down for it?

Just re-read my post. I sound like this is something I’m maybe not committed to: not the case. I’m driving my nearest & dearests nuts with my lengthy hours even just the last few months spent on this re-started journey, and this week have completed 5 Ableton re-edits/mixes (basic as they are!) and as this passion is now firmly integral to me again (at the young age of just turned 44!) I want to develop this, and let my music speak for me. Hence why I want to share it: just feeling a bit freaked by the legalities side of things: don’t want to lose livelihood, home or firstborn. Seems more of an issue since I went digital first 2yrs ago, perhaps with more opportunities to share ‘reworked’ music. Other thing is, when I went on a certain soul/rare groove forum about 10yrs ago when I lived in London and offered to DJ for free to gain more experience, I was utterly crucified for this by those who saw offers of cheap DJ’ing as anathema to their paid services. So I don’t take lightly the idea that I am happy to do this for free, in whatever form. Hobbies cost: end of, but hopefully not to the extent it makes this too much of a hurdle.

Thanks for replies all. It’s apparently one option among many, but as I knew before, it’s knowing your tracks inside out that counts. I was just, as I’m rejigging my entire collection, wondering about this as a database thing. Cool, thanks all.

Yep, great recommendation: thanks Mat! I can attest to this. Made a 2nd library and am organising all my tracks in it to within an inch of their lives.

Cheers again Vintage. Yep, managed to sort out with 2nd iTunes library and beginning to use some of the great features like the smart playlists. But trying to troubleshoot it, it seems to be a problem with Traktor importing the 2nd library, and keeping all my old stuff on there in the filing system. so it’s a question and fact-finding for this issue with Traktor.

Aaargh, help anyone? I created a new iTunes library, filled it with the first lot of my re-processed files and Traktor cannot work with it at all. I have tried to follow the online advice about how to create, fill and import a second library into Traktor but it gives an error message of missing file constantly, even when I follow the advice about setting the right path for the XML file for the library. Outcome: Traktor a total mess (though this is because I have multiple copies of pre- and post-processed files to be fair), iTunes (first library) a mess and me a jibbering wreck. Have no will left even to play music let alone DJ!

Is there an easier way of doing this? I have Traktor, I have (as said) multiple files of pre and post-processed music. These could possibly be tidied up in my Music folder and an alternative system used not involving multiple iTunes libraries. Annoying bit: the second library worked with MIK & I had a batch of beautifully tagged files.

Is it worth manually importing files from scratch to Traktor and maybe using an alternative tagging system like Beatunes?

    hoping my sanity restored soon…
