The biggest advice I can give you is to put a mix out there, show it to your friends and if they like it they will remember you the next time they throw a party ! My first gig was a small birthdayparty but 2 of the people who attended there liked me so much that they also asked me for a party of theirs.

Thanks again for your feedback, I’ll be sure to follow you on soundcloud, any mixesof yours you want me to check out?

I definitely understand your feedback, I have the same opinion on it but the truth is that normaly ‘Another You’ was the second track of the mix, I had a much softer song to begin with as an intro but this had a copyright strike and because it being the only song with a strike I decided to cut it away instead of redoing the mixtape.

It’s not my first mix as I’ve been a DJ since may 2013 and I’m a resident DJ at a local club (pretty small, 100 people max on busy parties) but I’m trying to get some more work out there to be able to show when people ask me for a party or something different than that club.

I really appreciate your feedback though ! This made my day !

    Hey DjMonster !

There is a big variety of Midi-controllers out there. Me myself, I have the DDJ WeGo (Pioneer), which I’m very satisfied with. It’s probably one of pioneer cheapest pieces but it’s definately not bad. Obviously with pioneer you can’t go wrong, Numark is good as well. I recommend not going for anything from Hercules that’s under $300. These are most likely small midi-controllers with a not so decent finishing on the casing, etc…. I don’t know the interface of Mixmeister Pro, but I think it’s best for you to do some try-outs with Virtual DJ and with Traktor and depend for yourself which software you like the most. Virtual DJ is more likely used with a pioneer and Traktor with Numark (both can be mixed though).

The key part is that you start off with learning how to beatmatch though. This is the basic of DJ’ing! Never touch your sync button and don’t use it to mix either. When you can beatmatch properly, try beatmatching by the sound of the music itself and don’t look at your software anymore. When you can beatmatch on your own controller and you can do it just by listening, then you can probably DJ on almost every midi-controller and even on CDJ’s after a while.

I have my DDJ WeGo which I use at home to try out stuff and mixes, but when I play at a party it’s always on CDJ’s, which is an easy transfer for me just because I can beatmatch without the sync-button

    Hope this helped you !

    Hey Brassman !

I’m 18 years old as well and I started DJ’ing Summer 2013. At first I started with just software, trying things out and just fiddling around with buttons, I never had any musical education so it was a whole new world for me. I got used to the software and probably a month or 5 afterwords I decided to buy a controller (DDJ WeGo). I made some first mixtapes and tried things out and decided I really liked it. But I got to a point where I thought that it was a bit boring to keep being a bedroom DJ. I started with playing at some small parties that friends threw. With small I really mean small, my first real ‘gig’/live performance was a pool party with 7 people. But gradually people knew that I was into DJ’ing and that’s the best advertisement you can have. Just let everynoe know that you’re interested in that sort of stuff and that you put a lot of time in it. When friends start throwing parties, that’s when they’ll think of you! The first REAL party I played at (50+ people) was October last year. It was a birthdayparty and since then, several bithdayparties have followed. Birthdayparties and house parties are the first kinds of parties that you’ll be asked for, if people really like you and you put some time in advertising and spreading your music (soundcloud, mixcloud, facebook,…) then bigger gigs will follow.

As for a very important tip that I want to give you:
Don’t DJ with the sync-button, it’s easy to use but it’ll ruin a lot of performance opportunities for you later! If you learn to mix by beatmatching from the start, you’ll be able to perform anywhere and you won’t have to carry all your equipment with you every time. Because when you get to play at bigger parties there will most likely be a setup with CDJ’s, and almost none of them have a sync button, which would mean that you can’t play on them because of your lack of skills and you’ll have to say no to the gig.

That’s my story, I get about 2 gig’s a month now, sometimes more, hope this helps you and if you have questions you can definately ask them !

    Greetings

    Hi Sean !

I’m replying to you your post because I can recognize a little bit from myself in it. I’ve been in your situation and to be honest; I was very nervous! I have the standard DDJ WeGo which I used to start with and the DDJ WeGo 2 will definetely be good for a house party. As for tips, I can give you some regarding a house party with the WeGo:

    – watch out for cables: the cables aren’t perfectly hidden on these small parties (obviously) so look out that no one accidentally trips on one of them and that they’re not in your way
    – (as said above) make sure that no one puts their drinks on the table where your equipment is on, this saves you a lot of stress because nothing can spill on your equipment (best thing is to put your laptop on a box or sth so that it’s a bit higher above your WeGo so that when something does spill, it won’t be on your laptop)
    – watch out for your jogwheels: I know that the WeGo has sensitive jogwheels so look out that you don’t accidentally touch them, which would cause the music to stop
    – don’t be nervous! It’s your own equipment and your music, if you’re certain that you can perform good then you’ll perform good
    – adapt to the people: if they’re not ready to dance yet, don’t panic, start with some deep house or just quieter songs, depending what genre you play
    – if there’s a facebookpage or an eventpage and you think you’ve done well, drop some information about you afterwords, some people might contact you ,if they think you were good, for parties that they throw

That’s about all the tips I can give you ! I played my first party in October last year and since then I’ve had numerous people ask me for parties and gigs, so a lot has happened for me since then 🙂

If you have further questions, feel free to reply to his and otherwise: good luck !

    Jonas
