LouCParticipant
I’m dying to hear that teacup / spoons mix!!!
LouCParticipantI’ve got a pair of PreSonus Eris E8s that have a nice clean flat sound to them. They also have some accosting tuning features built in which can help you to customize the sound some. I bought them mainly because I was looking for a pair of dedicated monitors to replace my HiFi setup in my office / studio, and because I didn’t want to spend a fortune on a pair of monitors. I got the E8s for around less than $350 for the pair on eBay direct from PreSonus. They also carry a 4.5 and a 5 inch driver if you want something a little smaller. I went with the 8″ because my office has 15′ ceilings and I wanted to be sure I could fill the room with sound. I’ve had them for over 6 months now and couldn’t be happier. If you can find them at a local store give them a go and let me know what you think.
LouCParticipantThe 13″ MacBook Pro i7 processors I think are almost always dual core. Only the 15″ models had quad core processors. However, a dual core i7 is more than enough for what he needs. This does have the haswell processor, so battery and performance should be much better than the original one he was looking at. I think this is the hardware configuration you should be looking at, now just shop around and try to get the best price on the same configuration.
LouCParticipantI actually have that very same model you are looking at right now. Mid-2012 2.9ghz i7. I will say it is easily one of the best machines I’ve ever owned, full disclosure, this is coming from a previous windows user (Lenovo T series mainly). This was my first mac, and I love it.
That being said, I think this is a little high for what you’re getting. First off, I bought this model with only 8GB of Ram and and a 750GB spinny HD 2 years ago for $700 used. I upgraded to 16GB of Ram ($130) and added a 256GB SSD ($150) to run the OS and my apps and moved the 750GB spinny drive to replace the internal DVD ROM to house all my data. So all in all, that still came in under the price you were quoted and that was 2 YEARS ago. I now find myself looking to move into one of the rentna models as this one has served me well.
I think DJ Vintage is right, and you should look into a year or 2 old retna model, the Mid-2012 is starting to show its age. The rentna models are thinner, lighter and do have a much better display. I would specifically recommend a retina model with one of the haswell line of processors. i5 will save you some money and unless you are doing some serious music production, an i7 is unneeded. Try to get 16GB of RAM if you can, because the RAM is not upgradable on the retina models, and more RAM will help you to future proof your purchase. Only get the amount of HD you need right now, because there are aftermarket hard drives that you can self install on the retina models.
Good luck!!
LouLouCParticipantI agree with Terry on all accounts if you are going to go with a Serato controller. I have both the DDJ-SX2 ad The MC6000 MKII. I I will say however, depending on where you are playing, especially if in a club setting, space may be an issue with the SX2 if you are trying to cram into a booth with other gear. I think the Numark NV has a similar footprint to the SSX2 as well.
LouCParticipant^^ +1 DJ Vintage
LouCParticipantI’ve been a Windows and Linux guy all my life, my “real job is in the business / software development industry. I’ve found the Lenovo’s T-Series that D-Jam mentioned to be built very solid and very reliable. I would also agree with doing a clean windows install without all the crap the manufactures add on. What I’m about to say next however still makes me cringe being that I have always been anti Apple.
I recently acquired a used 13″ Mid 2012 Macbook Pro. It is the Core i7 2.9 ghz model. I upgraded it to 16GB of Ram, There is a 256GB SSD running the OS and a 2TB spiny Drive used for data. (I swapped that out for the optical drive) I will say that this is by far the best laptop I’ve ever owned. Everything just works!! I’ve got plenty of horsepower to run windows 7 in a virtual machine using virtual box, but VM ware or even the Apple bootcamp software will let you run windows on this machine. Everything runs really snappy and I haven’t had a problem with it for the year that I’ve had it. My next personal laptop will likely be a 15″ model.
In looking out on eBay, it appears you could get a similarly equipped 15” MPB with similar specs that I’ve described for around $1100-$1200. The Macbook is just a better running machine in my opinion, and I would probably go that route if it were up to me.
