Nice setup! Will be interested in your report and mix. Merry X-mas 😉
Chuck ColemanParticipantI came from CDJs, never spun vinyl. I have the Reloop J3 ME. It is my first controller and I really don’t have anything to compare it to. Having said that I bought it for the specs (Line in, booth out and volume control, adjustable jogs) and the build quality. This thing is built like a tank. So far I’m very happy with it, but will be interested to get my hands on some other controllers (Twitch is very intriguing to me).
Chuck ColemanParticipantIn sports they call it “arousal control”. The ability to drop those tracks that give you shivers and make your heart pound every time, and still stay focused with steady hands!
Chuck ColemanParticipantPaolo Mojo, Kaskade, and Mark Farina are the best House Dj’s I’ve heard in person. Caught DJ Marky live in Sao Paulo once, which was insane good.

I started recording my mixes under Odd, and figure that will be my producer handle if/when I start producing my own tracks. I went by DJ Cole for a short period of time as Cole is a derivative of my last name. But googled it one day and… you know the story. Anyway, still trying to figure it out.
Chuck ColemanParticipantNice! Picking up some ideas already. Let’s keep it going.

I wish I had been smart enough to ask questions like this when I was your age. Looking back this is my advice to someone in your situation. Remember, your first year or two of college is for dabbling, finding out what you like and are good at before you declare a major. I assume university in Canada is similar in this regards to the US. With that in mind, think of some areas of concentration that might compliment your musical ambitions. I can think of a few. I would definitely take a business course or two, as success in any field takes business knowledge these days. Also, any technical subjects such as computer science or engineering will go well with music production. I don’t know if you’ve studied any 2nd languages in HS, but in today’s world a 2nd language can open a lot of doors for you, and if you end up traveling a lot once you’ve “made it big”, it will come to be invaluable to you. There are some things you can do outside the classroom as well. Practice your soft-skills whenever you get a chance: i.e. learn how to relate naturally and comfortably with as many different types of people and organizations as you can. A lot of success is who you know, or can manage to get to know quickly. You will also be presented with a lot of opportunities to practice your music as well. See if they have a dj club, try to get a gig in the student lounge, you could dj for the schools athletic teams, and of course every college town has lots of clubs and bars you can play in. Best of luck!Chuck ColemanParticipantThat’s a good basic setup. You can sell the mixtrack no problem if you decide to upgrade, and higher end dj headphones go on sale all the time.
I invested a little as I know I like to do this and wanted a setup that could last a few years at the least. I just got a Reloop Jockey 3 on Black Friday over at Creative Light and Sound. Sold some of my schoolbooks back to amazon and got a pair of Technics headphones. I’m thinking of picking up a pair of the M-Audio AV-40s everyone is raving about on this site. My Asus laptop is pretty fresh as I had to replace a 5 year old Acer that died about 6 months ago. Slowly optimizing it for djing.
My girl and I live in Honolulu, about 5 minutes froim downtown. Have spent a lot of time in SF as well. Now that’s a great dj town!Chuck ColemanParticipantNo particular order

Chuck ColemanParticipantI work for a local office of a National non-profit. I run recreational athletic leagues and events. It’s actually kind of a cool job and it has some travel perks. It does lack a little in the compensation area, and can be incredibly political at times. I’m currently finishing up grad-school and hope to make the jump out of NP and into the private sector. My co-workers have no idea what I listen to or mix.
Chuck ColemanParticipantNot yet. I’ve been completely out of the scene for a couple of years. I need to check out all the new parties that have started and get to know the community, promoters etc all over again. Will start going out in the Spring once I graduate. Would maybe like to gig a few weddings next summer and see what that’s like.
A month in huh? that’s cool, very exciting times getting your first mixes down. Are you able to record your sets? What’s your setup like? What Island are you on?Chuck ColemanParticipantHowzit! Yeah, I counted 3 of us so far, probably a few more, but I didn’t go diggin to far.
Makua Beach West side 2005, spinning a small beach party for some friends. Hauled a Honda generator from Honolulu for power and played through a boom box. Lotta fun.
Do you play out locally? I’m currently working and going to school full-time, so gathering my gear, collecting tracks and practicing until I’m done with classes in March.
Chuck ColemanParticipantYour welcome to visit any time!
Just picked up a Jockey 3ME at a local Black Friday sale and… Traktor just went 50% off, so couple of speakers and on my way 😉
