For me it’s a chance to discover both new music and to rediscover music as well as giving me a way of interacting with music that I hadn’t had before. I also find it great for destressing.

I’ve been taking bass lessons since January last year. Wasn’t quite sure how I’d get on starting at 36 as I’d never had any real musical training before but I really love it. I’ve had issues with depression these last ten years and both getting into playing bass and djing has really helped. I even got to meet Dave Ellefson and Frank Bello from Megadeth and Anthrax at a bass clinic in Romford earlier last year. I also enjoy playing around with some of the free/cheap ios music apps.

I’m lead enquiry officer at my local library. I’m also a volunteer for Asthma UK.

There are two ways to do it with RadioShack parts (or “The Source” in Canada which used to be RadioShack Canada … not sure what the equivalent store would be in the UK) :

We used to have Radioshacks ( or was it Tandys ? ) in the UK back in the early 90s. The equivalent now would be Maplins. Always a good bet for that spare cable or adaptor and I’ve always found them really helpful.

I always have the dilemma of whether to go for quality or hard drive space when I’m ripping my cds into itunes. I’ve landed up going for the 320kbps mp3 option as it seems to be the best compromise and in most cases apart from some very badly recorded rock stuff ( Husker Du – New Day Rising in particular ! ) it sounds fine – the tracks in my dj playlist all sound okay. Something I’m not sure about in itunes are the vbr settings and so on. I’ve got them set as on at the moment and like I say everything sounds okay. I love digital djing and having 2000 plus songs of all types on my laptop but there are some days when ripping a cd I own or backing up my music collection just seems like work whilst owning that rare bit of vinyl and taking it out etc just seemed like more fun…I haven’t got the space for vinyl now but I really miss it sometimes.

I don’t know if the numark websites doing the same deal over in the states but you can download serato dj intro for free if you don’t get on with the bundled software. I decided to stick with Traktor and upgraded to the pro version so I could record. I guess it’s what feels right. I’ve also found that having the mixtrack and laptop at the right levels both for my back and eyes helps as well. Anyway hope you enjoy.

Thanks Phil – I’ll have a look at those. The fact that they can be folded definitely appeals.
