Well I did it and I thought it went a bit Pete Tong but a few people said it was good and thought I’d been doing it for years lol. I’m glad I listened to the advice on here and from the mrs. Wed night I played her what tracks I was doing and she said it was all in time but there was no flow. Thurs night I thought let me listen to these tracks again and she was right so I scraped 75% off them and spent 2 hours getting a good play list. So Friday I get to the party and I did freak out a bit. Big marque in the garden and inc me 4 dj’s and the main 2 had a massive banner with there names on it. They had set up a load of lights CDJ’s and 1210’s. Even the mixer freaked me as it was nothing like mine. First guy went on and he was ok but he was drop mixing and he defo had no flow playing house then dubstep, dnb and people left the dance floor. I’m glad my set was just house but I made 1 mistake which was big near the beginning and half the dance floor left (I re started the 3 track again) but when Calvin Harris came on every body was back dancing. One dude said after it was awesome and a few others said when am I next playing again. Not bad for a guy doing it for the last 4 weeks. But what a rush I glad I took the opportunity. Thanks again everyone

    Very true. Let’s do this!!!!

I’ve taken on board what you have all said. I am going to try and learn how to do it the old Skool way and I’ve got my head round counting now but just need to work on my pitch control skills and bringing in tunes. I spoke to a guy the other day about counting and he says because most of my music is radio edit I can’t really do it properly? He said just use the waves on my laptop. So I guess this is when knowing my tunes come in? And dropping the next song in the right place? I’m never going to play in a club or bar but as long as I’m good enough to play at parties and have a mix at home I’m happy. Most of the dj’s I know after talking to them can’t mix on vinyl and they always need a laptop. So I think there not as good as I first thought.

    Where’s that on serato? I got a SL1

I got vinyl turn tables. No sync button for me 🙁 I saw a good video by a Australian dj on how to count today. I get it now. Just need to know my tunes and practice

Ages when I was talking to a guy at work he told me get the numark IDJ live and see how you get on before deciding if I like mixing and that I can do it. Showed it to my brother in law who said nah just go for it and buy a used serato box. I did ask around a few friends that dj and they all said just blow the dust off your wife’s old decks and play around with them. Which is all well and good but she mostly has D n B but I wanted to do hip hop and dubstep. So for £180 for SL1 and having the turntables etc already there it was worth ago. Plugged it all up last night and my brother in law had a quick go. So I think the wife is interested now as she never had a clue about rane. So maybe it will encourage her to get back on them. She hasn’t touched them in 3 years or more. When we first met she was in pubs and clubs now and again djing so she’s got skills but lost the love. But after seeing DJ fresh last year and a few other acts I said to myself I gotta learn how to do this. If by this time next year I get to mix at a party or 2 ill be happy.

Everyone keeps saying to me avoid free sites. But music is so expensive. I’ve only downloaded a fraction of what I want and I’ve still got 100 or so tracks left to go. Oh well the price of being a dj I guess 🙂

Cool thanks. Also talking to my mate he was talking about the serato dice? Watching it on YouTube it looks good. Should I buy some or wait a while until I get to a certain level?

Well my second hand SL1 is on its way so hopefully ill get on with it. If not it was only £180 so I’m sure I could sell it on. Do you think I should buy new needles? These technics decks have only been used once or twice in the 3 years.
