Thanks for your help guys. I plan to get the Sound Engineer in the bar with me to test it out before the next gig in May. As I said he didn’t know why it didnt work and if DJ Vintage itsnot sure I’m pretty certain there is a fault in the set up somewhere.

Yes Vintage, I did mean RCA and what you wrote makes sense of why I had to have the volume so high on the Denon. To risk showing my ignorance here, is there any reason why a PA Mixer is sending a better signal than the Denon? I do have another straight DJ Mixer (Numark M8) I could put in the loop if that could make a difference.

The singer I saw performing had their mic’s and laptop going into a pa/mixer, then into the wall XLR sockets.

When I used their Pa/Mixer and went from the Denon’s phoneo output into the mixer via large jacks (I’didn’t have the connectors to run from my XLR outs). Then from their pa/Mixer to wall sockets, XLR to XLR. Your comments did remind me that I had to have the main output volume on the Dennon very high, c 3 o’clock, which I never do when running into my own powered speakers or into a typical DJ mixer set-up. I normally never need to go beyond 12 O’clock.

I tried to go directly into their QSC amp and by-passing the limiter but where they are situated, under seats, made it impossible to gain access, even though I was on the floor, torch in hand.

It seemed as if the signal the Dennon was presenting needed a boost? I agree that I will probably need to get their sound engineer out, but the fact that he didn’t have a clue when I spoke to him on the phone doesn’t fill me with hope.

I giged with the Dennon the night before and have done so since so that’s not the weak link.

I agree with all of the above. I would ad. get there in plenty of time to get set up and know that your ready to go. There is nothing worse, IMO, in running late, either setting your gear up, or trying to plug into the club’s equipment in a rush. Gwt set up with timw to spare and confident that when you hit Play yoy good to go.

Latin DJ, Terry was responding to my last comments. Thanks for taking the time to do so Terry. The reason I read and enjoy DDJT is to find out how people far more experienced than I do their thing, take it all on board and then decide what works for me.

Terry_42. I’ve given serious consideration to a Mac and the reasons I’m not going for one are (I write this in case you can convince me). I need a 15″ and the MacBook Pro has a max of 512 storage. Now I know you guys say that’s plenty but I do mobile work and radio shows so need a lot of music available and 512 doesn’t work for me, a lot of my radio music I wouldn’t play out but still need it available. I’m not going to consider running off a portable hard-drive, I use ITunes so every time I want to do any work on my music I need to have that connected, a pain. It doesn’t have an optical drive, not a major problem, but still a minus point. It has only 2 USB’s ports, another problem if trying to run off a portable hard drive. I do love the build quality and minimal keyboard. As I’ll be maintaining a copy of my library on a back-up Windows machine the workflow required for compatibility issues is really off putting. i.e. having a back up hard-drive that is compatible with both Windows and Mac.
I know these issues are all surmountable but I’m creating extra hassle to get a Mac, that will cost double a very good Windows laptop whilst creating more work for myself. Maybe I’ve been lucky, but I’ve not had a crash mid set so am not so biaised for a Mac as those that have. As I said I’m happy to be convinced….

I agree with Terry on choosing a professional model, and my IT man at work recommended the HP Elitebook. The reason I’m looking at the 2 Custom builders I’ve listed above is the quality of components they use and the ruggedness of the cases. Again taking the advice of the IT man, he considers the components these guys use to be the top end and better than used in a consumer laptop. I’ve run with consumer laptops for about 3 years now. My 1st was underpowered but lasted about 18 months. My current is an I 3 and still going well. I don’t use it for anything other than music and it’s fairly well stripped of all the crap that comes with these type of machines. I’ll keep this as a backup and for running my broadcasting software when doing my internet radio show. To date it’s not given me any problems and I play out min once a week, often twice and mainly in busy pubs and busy private parties in function rooms. So in my experience a consumer laptop is not all doom and gloom but I do agree with all the techy’s on here that it’s not ideal.

in reply to: Renting Speakers for small Gig? #2153351

I own a pair of K12’s and, IMO, they sound as good as the majority of the 15″ speakers. They certainly match my DAS 15″‘s. You can also give them a bit more bass with the Deep mode. I also have 1 K Sub (Being able to rent another from a friend if required). I’ve run room with 300 with my 2 K 12’s and 1 K Sub, So I’d recommend that if the company have a sub for hire.

I put out the same help request a few weeks ago, check out the older topics in DJ Gear section. I’m still to buy but am down to a couple of choices. Basically a lot of guys on here are big Mac fans and by all accounts have good reason to be so. I took all that onboard but decided I still wanted a Windows machine. I’ve looked at the 15.4″ HP Envy series, I defintely don’t want to carry around a 17″ machine as it’s too big and more liable to be knocked, IMHO. I’ve discounted the Envy as I can’t pick up the exact spec I want and to me, although it looks good it’s still a bit plasticky. I want an SSD for speed of bootup, and a larger HHD for better storage. I’m down to 2 choices, both allowing me a custom build. http://www.scan.uk/3xs They have a pro Audio model that you can then up-spec with yr own Processor selection, ram and hard-drive capabilities. The other option I’m looking at is http://www.pc.co.uk and either the ComsosII or Optimus IV range with similiar customisation options. I’ve decided on an I 5(Although still may opt for an I 7 even though it’s not required), 8 gig ram, 250 SSD and a bigger HHD and will go with Windows 7 Professional. This will be a clean copy of Windows without the manufacturers Bloatware, therefore no need to strip down.

I’m looking firward to the other comments as much you.

    Good luck

As it stands I’m leaning towards the Scan option.

Sometimes I buy both and then play the version that suits the venue/audience better

It’s all about knowing your music and storing your music so you find what you’re looking for. CD and Vinyl DJ’s often crate their music in BPM order. We. Digital DJ’s, use virtual crates, so in principle it’s the same. Know your music and know where to look for your next track.

in reply to: Virtual DJ or Serato for DDJ-SB #2149621

The advice that I read on these pages, and followed, when looking for a Controller was to find one that works best with the software you use. That worked for me. I use VDJ and am not experienced enough on Serato to comment on it. VDJ does everything I need and the Denon MC6000 fits my needs exactly too. I found the Controller Guide and reviews on this site extremely helpful when deciding so maybe take a look at those too.

in reply to: High-End Controller vs. Standalone Mixer #2149481

I’d recommend the combined controller/mixer option, it savea on carrying an extra piece of kit and time setting up. I also use the Denon MC 6000 and upgraded to a Mk2. I use plug in my Ipod as back-up. I’ve had DJ’s working with me using CDJ’s, Turntables and/or other controllers, so as Vintage says, it is versatile. It’s also small enough to fit in most booths or add onto another DJ’s systemm when I’m guesting.

    Hope thathelps

in reply to: Decent Laptop for DJing and Producing? #2147571

I’m not as experienced as a lot of guys on here but my feeling is that you could DJ on that laptop but if you are going to be regularly playing out, don’t expect it to last too long. My consumer level machine had to be replaced within 18 months.

Whilst not a Mac user I’d agree with Terry_42 that a 2nd hand Pro/Business Laptop or Mac plus a controller would be a better bet. I would not consider trying a touchscreen to DJ live with.

    Good luck

in reply to: Dj Controller Sound Quality #2141871

DJ Vintage. I agree, I can’t tell the difference in sound output from the Denon Mk1 to the Mk2, only that they both sound good to me. Equally so with VDJ7 and VDJ8.
