Depends on the style, I mix tech house/minimal generally and sometimes long 2-3 minute mixes are perfect, I’m from a more “traditional” background and was brought up with long outro-intro mixing.
I generally don’t like when a DJ is cutting, doing short mixes, throwing effects all over the top of a tune, tends to piss me off in 99% of the cases (James Zabiela is a perfect example, technically brilliant, but annoying as hell to watch)
Look at DJs like Digweed, Burridge, Villalobos, Derrick May etc etc you never hear them mashing tunes up, it’s just a different style. not right or wrong. Certainly not a sign of a bad/boring DJ.

It’s gotta be done right though, on the 32/64 bar, in key etc etc.

I have a collection of labels I tend to like large % of their releases. Then I use charts of DJs I like, and set lists from recorded mixes (Essential Mix, Podcasts, Boiler Room etc etc

Then the rest I hear about from friends, forums, twitter etc….

Not having to carry my record box and burn CDs.

I love the development of key finding software too, made shit a lot easier.

yawn this is boring me now…can we get back on topic?

at the end of the Day…having Standalone Mixer Capability is a luxury and not a necessity…If the controller has EVERYthing you want except that…dont like the standalone function be a deciding factor…Integration and actually usability is more of a factor than something that can be a safety net. If a CDJ goes down during your set u are just as screwed

I don’t think Todd was talking about CDJs… more the ability to hook up an MP3 player or something and if your computer goes down you can bring it straight in through the controller (which is also a stand alone mixer)

It’s a feature I wish my controller had, not saying I’d want to use it, but it’d be good to have it, one of my residencies has no house gear (South American themed restaurant/bar/club, had previously just used a computer playlist) and if my laptop ever did crash there’d be silence for a bit while I swapped the leads around

Does the S4 still work without a computer though? For example your laptop crashes/wont boot. I know the T1 won’t. Some people like that feature as a fall-back.

Think about every profile you’ve filled out. (Thinking about it? Good.) Lot more than song preferences there, starting with a viable email address. Can you sing “Spam, spam, spam, spam….”

Well I can’t think of an app that I’ve ever given an email address but plenty of forums etc, that said I can’t say I get any spam in my inbox. Ever, even with a 10+ year old email….. it’s not a hard thing to avoid? And I’m talking Apple here, not the minefield that is Androids Marketplace, I mean Apple aren’t saints, but its app vetting process has gotta keep SOME of the dodgier shit out.

I just find a lot of people are extremely internet paranoid. A brain and a bit of common sense will keep you safe. I got nothing to hide and if I did it wouldn’t be on the internet.

As more and more info. on you gets “out there,” someone can put together a potentially detrimental (in effect, not character) profile. In today’s identity theft and privacy-eroding environment, I DON’T WANT TO GIVE ANY MORE INFORMATION ON MYSELF THAN ABSOLUTELY (F’in) NECESSARY!!

    Rant ended…as you were.

So DJs shouldn’t want other people knowing what songs they like/listen too?

    Interesting take.

I use Shazam and forums….. Back in the day I used to download a helluva lot of live dj mixes and then spend days hunting down and completing tracklists… It’s a lot easier now.

Top of a hill overlooking Adelaide in Australia.

Was great fun, we had to drag a PA, lights, generators, kegs etc a 30 minute walk up a hill but wow it was fun.

I think hitting the eject button on the wrong CDJ three times in one night was pretty bad.

Actually probably the worse was playing a gig at a massive festival after party… It was my first time using an S4 (the previous DJ was using it and I told him just to leave it and I’ll play off that as opposed to the CDJs) I spent the first 20-30 mins of my set one level off on the EQs… So I was using the highs as gains, mids as highs, lows as mids and the filter as the bass (I think that all makes sense)… Now this place has a terrible sound system and I was a little bit bent so it was kind of understandable…. However having it pointed out to me by Diplo & the guys from Magnetic Man took a while to live down.

I turn off my virus scanner that’s it…..Obviously It’ll be a clean boot up each time I play

Seriously Traktor isn’t that system intensive… if you’re computer was purchased in the last couple of years all of these ideas seem like massive over reactions, I’ve never had a single issue at any gig (I’m pretty sure I’ve just jinxed myself)

Internal is massively faster, I can’t imagine/fathom any reason any one would want to be using a way way slower external drive *shrug*

You Have to look at a few things, Does Treyvon has a background(which he does)? If Zimmermen has one as well? Now Im sure things did happen that no one will know about but the media needs to stop showing a picture of a 12 year old boy, Treyvon is 17yrs old and is 6’2″ and looking into a few things myself (FB, myspace, linked etc..) He definitely looks like the “thug” type or “hood rat.”

That’s some mad mad stereotyping there dude. :

I’m kinda lucky. I only work 1 day a week running a few companies web stores, I actually earn enough from DJing to get by quite well.
I’m also doing a double degree in Law/Business in the Music Industry which keeps me busy from Monday-Thursday.
