vynil, cds, digital no matter what beatmaching is a skill as is scratching even if you don’t use it it is nice to know how to do it

99%? Traktor doesn’t even get it right that often…

It’s a good way to get the idea of beat matching in your head but it’s far far far from foolproof. Like someone said use your ears not your eyes.

From a Melbourne perspective, which I can’t imagine is too different, go out to clubs you like, make friends, talk to promoters and other DJs….. Check out the forums on inthemix.com.au (way more people over there, and it’s localised, lots of local DJs, promoters etc.)

Regarding controllers, it depends, if it’s a bigger club and it has a set of 2000s and a 900, then no they probably won’t be too cool on controllers, I’ve seen quite a few around though, it’s not a laughed out sort of thing, just make sure you can play on the CDJs if you need to.

I went last week to my citys show and it was amazing, I saw Bingo Players, Tommy Trash, Avicii, Tiesto, Calvin Harris, Example, Krewella, Zedd, Dillon Francis, Diplo, Datsik, Major Lazer, Excision and Bassnecter. .

    +1 except that’s a list of artists I avoided.

Beyer, Gesaffelstein, French Fries, Brodinski, Loco Dice, Nina Kraviz and Destructo ftw.

Not much recently, I’ve been out of action with uni exams, I got a few gigs coming up over summer though.

I’m a big fan of techno/tech house. I’d definitely recommend checking out anything at Brown Alley (Colonial Hotel)… Beyer and Loco Dice this weekend. Brodinski/Gesaffelstein and French Fries are at Bottom End on Saturday night as well..

These sites should be a good starter for shit that’s going on.

And this is a good one too meet some local heads/get a feel of the scene.

I’m from Melbourne too. Lots of cool shit going on, it just depends what sort of stuff you’re into.

The techno/tech house scene is amazing.

I’m pretty sure every sample needs to be cleared, even if its indistinguishable from the original (if you’re honest enough to own up to it…)

That’s if you plan on commercially releasing a tune.

In Australia it varies, last time it swapped I had to play an extra hour, the time before when it moved the other way I had to play an extra hour.

I was told it would balance out when daylight savings moved again later in the year. It didn’t. Oh well.

95% of festival headliners suck and play the same recycled sets…

First gig was free, I was shit and I probably didn’t deserve any more. It was a learning experience.

I get much much much much more then that now…. I still think if people aren’t ready then they shouldn’t charge, that’s not t say they shouldn’t take the shot, but charging people when you’re no good….

Artists may have other deals in certain countries that prevent the sale, or they like to have different release dates in their home countries, Boys Noize for example always releases his tunes in Germany first.

Chris Liebing uses a controller too.

But that said, if given the choice who wouldn’t rather use CDJ2000s in HID mode over most controllers? If I didn’t have to stuff around setting it up (and I could demand as much as a big name) I’d probably do it every time..

Every major country has a rights association/s (BMI, ASCAP, PRS, APRA etc…) any club worth its salt will have registered and pay a fee related to this. It’s not that expensive usually and its generally a blanket license for all music.
I know in Australia the money is usually pooled at the end of the reporting periods then allocated out via sales on the Dance Charts (which is far from the best way of doing it in my opinion, but short of every DJ writing detailed tracklists after each set is the best we’re gonna get)

I’d guess the process in the US and UK would be very very similar.

If it doesn’t I probably wouldn’t play there unless it’s some kicks ass underground party, in which case who cares, performance rights are the last of your worries.

That means a packed room, receptive crowd, no having to play mainstream crap, and no having to take requests. Just me sharing my musical tastes the way I think club/rave DJing should be.

That’s my theory for doing shit for free. If it feels like work, I want cash.

I’ve played for charity a few times as well, last weekend in fact my fee went to cancer research for daffodil day, and it happens every year, I mean the club pays me 51 weeks a year, I can spare 1 weekend for a good cause (Just make sure you’re money goes where it should, promoters can be dodgy f*cks)
