I’m going with my stepson and his friend. We went last year and it was a great day out.

Err, we’re still talking DJing here, right? 🙂

What I did, which was cheesy but effective, was this.

A month ago I played at a charity function. I knew I wanted to get as many people dancing as possible (obviously) so everyone would remember it as a great night. The audience were mainly 35-50 yrs old and many lived in my town so I was a bit nervous about screwing up.

I got my stepson to knock up a Calvin Harris minimix of his most popular songs knowing that this would get all the ladies on the floor, which it duly did. When it finished I picked up the mic asking everyone to show their appreciation to my stepson for his brilliant mix.

    Then the masterstroke.

I knew that the men wouldn’t dance unless more drink had been consumed (this is England, it may be true of other countries). I then asked all the ladies to get the love of their life (or their husband) and bring him back to the dance floor. I explained I was going to revive a dance that had fallen by the wayside over the years.

I suddenly found myself walking and talking in the middle of the room and was worried that this was going to backfire and nobody would join in. Everyone was asking me what was going on and even my wife thought that I’d lost my mind. However the ladies had got their partners on the dance floor so we were able to begin.

I then gave my stepson the nod and True by Spandau Ballet (I told you it was cheesy) came out of the speakers. There was a mix of laughs and groans but now I had more than doubled the crowd on the dance floor. I was dancing with my wife and gave my stepson the nod and we swapped places. I played the next track, a rocker (Reef, Place Your Hands) which went down well and the rest of my set kept everyone on the dance floor.

I guess it worked because no one is expecting a slow song in the middle of the evening but because partners were brought together it got the party going quicker.

I have found this too. Even though all my songs were analysed they would still jump. If you can see your beatgrids are out on a track just re-analyse that particular track and that should sort it.

No, I haven’t. I did think about using my stepson’s laptop (his is a better spec than mine) and installing an LE version on it and seeing what happens.
    Thanks for the response.

I read back to your original post and when I look at the laptop you have, there just shouldn’t be any performance issues. Things like disabling visual themes and desktop composition are nice when you want to run Traktor on an old laptop and you need every ounce of computing power you can get. But not on an i5, 6GB powered modern laptop.
I agree, I wouldn’t have thought there would be issues with these kinds of specs.

In essence I doubt that performance is an issue here, unless you have some pretty wacky background processes running. You could check buy pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL, then Task Management (hope I am getting the English terms right). There is a performance tab, where you can see what both the CPU and Memory load is.
I will have a look at this later.

In conclusion I keep returning to either a sound card driver (setting) issue and/or latency problems. You said you sorted it, but you didn’t say what you sorted and more importantly how.
I didn’t say I had sorted the latency issue but that I had tried to i.e. changing from 512 to higher or lower, changing other settings (I can’t remember now as I’m at work but I would have thought I knew them off by heart).

If I try yours and DJ Emazing’s suggestions and nothing comes of it then I would be happy to take you up on your very kind offer of sorting this out by private message. I see you are in the Netherlands so the time difference would only be an hour so hopefully it won’t be anything to inconvenient for you.
    Thank you.

Every time you go into tracktor now the visual themes will be disabled in windows allowing you program more memory, it will revert back when you exit tracktor. Also the popping sound may come from a grounding problem. If you laptop charger is a 3 prong plug then you should get put a 2 prong adapter on it, to know if this is the problem unplug the charger from the laptop and see if it still pops. Another thing also it to turn off the wifi.

Hey, thanks for your suggestions. I think they will be the ones I go for before doing anything as radical (for me) as partitioning.
Re the grounding problem, as I am in the UK all plugs are 3 prong because all sockets are take 3 prongs. I could plug it into a 2 prong adaptor but it would still need to go into a 3 prong socket. Have I missed something here?
    Thanks again.

Thanks for the advice. I’m a bit worried about doing this as I’m not the greatest with computers but I’m sure there’ll be some Youtube vids and stuff.

    Thanks again.

The songs in question were ripped from CD’s and have been in my iTunes for over 7 years with no problem whatsoever.
I have got a mix of tracks either downloaded from iTunes etc or ripped from original CD’s.
Laptop is less than 1 year old.

DJing wise, hopefully playing at a festival I played at this year next Summer and poss some other minifest gigs as well.

Glastonbury would be the one for me. I went 2 years ago and it was one of the best experiences of my life.

My profile pic was taken there whilst dancing for 2 hours to a DJ that we randomly (everything at Glasto is random) came across. This showed the true power of the DJ as every song was brilliant and we just couldn’t leave.

    Have a good un.

Last Night A DJ Saved My Life is definitely the one. I’ve almost finished reading my copy and the authors paint brilliant pictures of what was happening at the time of all of those pivotal moments, people and scenes. Highly recommend it.
PS Make sure you get the 2006 version as this had been updated from the previous (I think) 1999 version.

Update. My brother-in-law, as well as buying me beers all night gave me a £25.00 itunes voucher as well.

Hmmm, maybe it’s a hint and he wasn’t that happy with my song selection after all 😉

When I did my first set on Saturday night my brother-in-law, who’d asked me to do it, would have been happy with me picking the tunes and then using an ipod and letting it play. But I knew this wouldn’t keep the dance floor going. A lot of songs have long fade in’s and fade outs or sudden starts or take a while to get going. Fine for when you’re listening at home or in the car but when you’re dancing you want to get into the song as soon as possible.
Bearing in mind this was an ‘80’s concentrated set I set cue points for when the song gets going. So, instead of having the long synth intro, you have the big drum charge on Bon Jovi’s Living On A Prayer and everyone whoops immediately because they know the song has started. I also played Insomnia by Faithless and cut some of the build up to that, although I know that is a major part of the song, so that we can get to the beat quicker and people can dance.
Also, how can an ipod read the crowd, see what’s working , when to change the tempo. And an ipod can’t dance behind the decks/CDJ’s/controller and show everyone how much they are into it too.
I wasn’t worried about beat matching as I’m not proficient yet and wouldn’t yet inflict it on anyone else.
It is about the tunes but it’s also about executing them well so they flow and keep the party going.
