  • in reply to: Beginner Dj – should I go for Virtual DJ or Serato? #2102631

Plenty of the “dance” DJs I’ve seen play live use Traktor?

I’m a beginner myself & found VDJ pretty easy to get used to … I’ve played around with Serato & didn’t really enjoy using it, however I probably need to give it a fairer crack of the whip to be fair.

So what did everyone make of it? Just got back … plenty of toys to play with & come back with a few ideas on my next set-up.

Very kind of you to offer your help like that my friend – will certainly do that. By all means fire the edits across to me as they’ll be gratefully received!!

I’m trying to teach myself to DJ (going through a mid-life crisis!) & an avid listener, particularly of Prog / Tech / Deep house.

I’m glad you liked Japanese Snowbell … when it kicks in it bangs!! In all honesty, the likes of Guy J & Hernan Cattaneo (Soundexile) blow my mind with their productions. If you get chance, check out Darin Epsilon & CID Inc too as they are also extremely good producers / DJs to follow if you like that genre.

There’s another Guy from Israel called Guy Mantzur who is also fantastic btw … often plays with Guy J as they are on the same label (Lost & Found).

Will do for sure … having a really hectic weekend, but will definitely post sometime in the week.

Guy J is definitely on fire. He can’t do much wrong in my eyes (along with Hernan Cattaneo). I’m sure you’ve heard it, but Guy’s remix of Japanese Snowbell is something to behold.

Dizzy Moments certainly hits the spot in so many ways & it still gives me the same feeling now as when I first heard it played.

Some nice tunes in there so will check your set out over the weekend.

Guy J’s Dizzy Moments is epic & is undoubtedly (for me) the best track I’ve heard in many a year. Couldn’t believe it when he finally released it!

I play progressive house, deep house & some tech house.

Spend my ££ on the above.

In terms of a track it’s very hard to say … just general flow, break downs, the highs & whether it makes me tap my foot or occasionally nod my head (!!) and if it doesn’t sound too daft, do I think that it will mix well?! I’m relatively new to DJ’ing and learning the ropes, so it’s one of my thoughts tbh.

I’d really say that I look to pick up on the tunes that some of my influences are playing (Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo, Darin Epsilon, Dale Middleton etc etc) and then go from there. You then learn which producers & remixers tend to make tracklists of the high profile guys and that’s a starting point to then go on and research some more tunes.

Hope that’s of some use & best of luck!

I tend to base searches on those who are the leading remixers of tracks & then work backwards, i.e. see who’s tracks they seem to work on & then listen to a number of tunes that the artist has put out. You then come across quite a few people that you’ve never listened to previously.

I also listen to the likes of Proton Radio & Frisky Radio (more geared towards Deep House, Progressive etc). They have tracklists on their sites and then go from there.

Twitter is also a good tool – there’s a lot of accounts on there that preview new tracks.

2 of my current dj heroes (Guy J & Hernan Cattaneo) are not what I’d term ‘entertainers on the decks’ … there’s no gimmicky stuff from them other than the very occasional raising of their hands when there’s a great drop happening, but their choice of tunes in their sets, the journey they provide and the faultless blending of tracks makes them at the peak of their field.

I guess it depends upon your type of venue, type of crowd / occasion, type of music you’re playing and the image you want to pass on? Just my £0.02 worth.

Seems to me that more & more sets posted on Soundcloud etc do not come with tracklists from the DJ.

I can understand the “mystery” element & there’s plenty of guys out there who thrive on searching + providing ID’s of tracks, however we’re all in the same boat in terms of a love of music & it secondly doesn’t help the artists of the music used if the DJ doesn’t give support IMO.

As & when I feel ready to post a mix, I’ll certainly be offering up the tracklist.

Many thanks for the replies guys.

Genuinely unsure of the direction to go at the moment. Had sided towards Traktor, but prefer the SR/SX controllers when I’ve looked at them at BPM recently. Think I’m also going to delve in to Cross a bit more following Chuck’s recent glowing reports.

    Decisions hey …

    Chuck / Terry

Facing a similar dilemma … I’m currently using Virtual DJ & have an urge to move on to different software (lord knows why having said that!).

I mix house (prog / deep) and was wondering if you’d please give me your best recommendation as to direction to go.  Presently using a Mixtrack Pro, but another part of the equation is that I’m planning on upgrading my controller in the near future.  Like the look of the Pioneer DDJ-SR & therefore would be tied to Serato if I took this route, but am open to suggestions.

Not the most technically gifted in all honesty & not really a big user of effects.  Would like the opportunity to develop ability to re-hash tunes, but not to level of overkill.

Advice / guidance would be much appreciated.

Thanks again to you all for the welcome here.

I’m still feeling like an old wreck as my body is slowly giving up on me, but so long as the ears keep on working for me then I shall be ok … having said that, learning the technology side of things might still prove to be a heck of a struggle for a self-confessed techno-phobe!

Guy J – Dizzy Moments immediately springs to mind.  Epic tune.
