I agree with this. It’s really hard for people to grasp this concept for some reason. Your money is probably better spent elsewhere than on cheap CD players and a generic mixer. I know for a fact that right now you can grab a Z2 and two super OEM tables for under a grand. That setup will easily allow you to play in any bar or club with a turntable setup so long as you grab an Audio 4 off of eBay or the likes. Not all clubs use CD players and some that do even have Technics right there waiting for you.

Of course, this is all assuming you can’t be bothered to just slap an RCA into the mixer and use your own controller.

IMHO from a pure hardware standpoint, why pay for a used Intel Core 2 Duo when you could get an i3 or i5 for the same price with faster ram to boot?

It’s a marketing move to try and keep the low end market on lock down. Behringer has been promising their CMD line for some time and it’s due very soon if presales are accurate. But sadly even as a Numark fan the stuff they’re releasing to combat that is just not worth the time. They could take the technology of the four deck Mixtrack (RGB leds, full four deck control), add in some essential features (VU meters, gain control, more outputs and a shift button) and come out with a four deck Mixtrack that would actually be a step up from the original Mixtrack Pro. As after all, what is the point of making a successor if it doesn’t actually do anything to improve on the original?

But that is just my opinion.

If you want to TRY (I stress try) to pick up a used Midi Fighter you’ll want to hit the DJTT forums (More abundant than eBay and most of the time when they go to eBay they’re already on or have been on DJTT). The prices though are normally not as cheap as you would hope. Especially considering the LPD8 is like 46 bucks on Amazon.

Depending on where you are in Mesa, lightrail to downtown. I don’t actually know of any in that genre but I’d assume you’d be looking at gigs somewhere in Phoenix. Tempe/Scottsdale are mostly mainstream if anything.

House parties, it’s easy and relaxed. Just make sure your first gig isn’t to a bunch of metalheads like mine was.. Kind of odd getting the nod from an online mix of electro house to play a party and arrive to 100~ people wanting to hear heavy metal.

Egos. Plain and simple. DJ so and so had to walk uphill sixteen miles in the snow to play a record back in the day. Now any youngster with a pc can play tunes in time by hitting a single key. How ridiculous!

That’s really how I feel about the entire thing. It’s the same for the circle jerk on a lot of message boards about how bad digital controllers are and why you should just buy antique CDJs instead of even top of the line units like the SSX. It’s just stupid and serves no purpose. But that’s kind of how online communities are in everything.. so, whattya gonna do?

On topic for the OP, Virtual DJ from my perspective as a rookie DJ..

+Easy to use out of the box with the Mixtrack (I have the normal one myself – audio routing was super easy)
+Interface is actually pretty clean, it was very easy to look at it and see what was where and what it did
+The waveforms being on top of each other to me was super helpful for my less than stellar beatmatching
+I’m not a pro coder but I was able to remap my Sync/Stutter buttons to effects with just reading the VDJ faq and some trial and error (Read: Mapping is easy as hell)
+Everything is fairly simple with the program, really can’t stress this enough

-The out of the box effects are miserable and the filter is terrible
-The program itself doesn’t feel as professional as say Traktor
-The general image people have when you say you use VDJ is a mix or horror and laughter

Now to touch on the negatives and give some encouraging words, VDJ to me felt like I was learning on something more meant for mobile DJ’s or something of that nature. But honestly it’s a great program and a lot of the talk about the next installment in the series makes me happy I started with it and learned with it. One of the things they really nailed with this is how easy it is. I tried Traktor and it’s simple in it’s own right but if you simply open up the program with little previous experience you’re going to double take and just close it.

I recently went to a friends and when I told him what I had and what I’ve learned on he made some awful face. He had Traktor 2 Pro and an S4 that he prided himself on. He quickly shut up when I got on the decks and was seamlessly mixing electro house better than he could. Point to be made is that VDJ can and will teach you the stuff you need to know and give you the option to either expand with that program or use any other software. The argument of VDJ v Traktor (Or Serato) is really just fanboyism as at this day and age you can do anything with a computer and a FAQ or wiki. Traktor may excel at one thing while Serato another and VDJ and so on. But they can all be mapped to work with what you want to do. In the end as I’ve always read and experienced first hand, it’s not the soft/hardware it’s the person behind the decks.
