    @Broomptish
    I saw the SA tutorials, but as far as i can remeber, one was for Logic and the other was possibly ProTools or maybe FLStudio. I’m on ableton, but even still, that’s not the main problem. Both tutorial sets on SA don’t deal with samples. I’m guessing it’s possibly down to copyright or something.

    @Terry_42
    As i mentioned there, I’m on ableton. I’ve an idea of how the French House guys do it, in chopping out tiny bits of 70s/80s disco tracks and then making them into samples, but I’m more looking for techniques on how to go about finding good 70s/80s disco tracks. And, if there’s anything else I should look out for along the way, like with timing or pitch.

    FWIW, the first track I did is on SC. my friendface is http://www.facebook.com/twixmusic and the soundcloud is http://www.soundcloud.com/twicx . It doesn’t have samples in it, and was thrown together in about 3 hours. But the effort is there :p

    EDIT:
    Oh….. 🙁

    Doubleawesome! Firstly that DDT is growing so rapidly (in fairness, it is a great forum!) and for Terry_42 getting mod status.

    Congratuwelldone guys! I look forward to many more bass drops in the future. 😉

    i found ibrostep.com a good place to start on my chillwave quest. i’m really not great with dubstep to be honest, electrohouse is more my thing. HOWEVER, what I usually do for getting songs is to go onto beatport, go to the genres, and the closely related ones, see what’s new, staff pics, top 100 etc etc, and then “buy” them. That method works most of the time for me. between ibrostep as a starting point, and beatport as a sort of library, you should be ok I’d imagine.

    I’ve got 2.

    1. “I’m not sure if I have that track, but I’ll have a look through my library and put it on if i have it, k?”
    2. “No seriously, i’m really grateful for the opportunity to play here. It was a lot of fun, and I’d absolutely love to play again. You got my card, right? And did you give me yours?”

    Now bare in mind that I’m only new to playing live, but they’re mine so far. That and making sure you piss before you play, but thats obvious.

    I’m only new to the whole DJ world, but here’s my take on it.

    I used to be a turn up and play guy. I started off doing houseparties like that, and it was actually good, cos it made it easy to sort out requests. However, I started noticing that people at the house parties I played at said the electro-house stuff I was playing was “fucking ace man!” So, as electrohouse is my personal favorite, it became my weapon of choice. I then played 2 gigs in a club that’s known for having alternative music nights, i.e., specialist dubstep/house/electro/reggae nights. That allowed me to do an entirely electro-house set, but i still did a turn-up-and-play. At this stage though. I became more and more familiar with what songs go with what other songs, and just became increasingly familiar with my library.

    Recently, now that I’ve some time away from studying (failed my finals btw, so it’s back to uni in january, fml) I’ve started putting much more effort into song/set selection. After that lengthy discussion about “to mix live, or not to mix live,” I’ve got a pre-prepared set for a gig on saturday. I’ve a few requests from people I know that are going, so this actually gives me time to think about it, and see where to slot them in, and even make a few remixes for the night. To be honest, I like this arrangement of pre-preparing sets.

    At this point though, let me get to my concluding/most important point. Prepreparing a set works in this situation. Why? Because I’m known for playing electro-house, and i’m being employed/requested as an electrohouse DJ. Now, if I’m playing through my set, and decide to mix it up a bit, I’ve the confidence in my own skills (not 1337 skills, but i can do it) to mix live, if i feel the crowd going in a different direction. HOWEVER, if the crowd are liking my set, it can just play through, and I can have fun with effects, and have 1 more drink than usual. (I STRICTLY limit myself to 2 drinks during a set – enough to relax, nowhere near enough to get me drunk.)

    KM that’s a very valid point. I guess if, for example, you were a dubstep dj playing in a dubstep club, it would be a bit less…. risky. I’m only new to the dj world, having only played 2 live gigs to a crowd of about 100. The gigs I played were in a club that has a reputation for playing alternative genres. In my case, the gig was advertised as an Electro-House gig, so i had mostly electro house, and then a few of my own remixes of current tracks with big electro house songs. It worked out well, and actually, one remix that I put together myself got the best response from the crowd.

    Getting back on topic, if lets say you had a preprepared set, and the crowd weren’t really buying into it, having a decent set of mixing skills SHOULD allow you to easily go from a pre-prepared set to mixing live. I could see it being a big benefit if, for example, you were playing a specific genre type event, like techno, house, electro, dubstep etc. But unless you intend on being known as a specific genre dj, you may present problems for yourself.

    Personally, I love the electro house genre, and tomorrow, I’m going to start making my own stuff (VERY EXCITED), so if i was going to, from now on, be known as an electro-house dj, I could see where a pre prepared, or at least partly, set would be helpful.

    I’m just glad that on this forum, people are open to opinions and ideas. I left another forum because even when I was asking advice on my first gig, it was like “OMG STUPID NOOB KIDS WITH A LOLTOP THINK THEY CAN DJ!! YEW ARE YOUNG AND FAIL!!!” Get lost, I’m 25.

    hahahah! That sounds like a seriously advanced solution for someone as new as me, but at least you’re not like other forums where they just go catatonic at your opinions and ideas.

    I’d be tempted to give it a go. Just once.

    Phil that’s awesome, cheers for that!

    I didn’t notice this thread, but I ended up starting another one here: http://www.digitaldjtips.com/forum/threads/controversial-discussion-opinions-needed.4157/

    In anycase, I had a read through this, and I’ve been having a good think about it. I think you’re talking absolute sense about reacting to the crowd. In my opinion, song selection is 90% of the work. If you have a series of 5 or 6 songs that are slowly building up the energy level, and then the 7th drops the energy levels right down, it’s a major buzz kill. Its kinda like Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

    I’m very new to djing, and i spend most of my time carefully selecting what songs to play in what order. If we step away from the DJ world for a sec, and take a band, a big band, one that’s had numerous big albums, and play festivals etc. They CAREFULLY select a setlist, with the odd variation like a cover or something like that, but that setlist is very carefully planned. So why should DJing be any different.

    Pre-prepared sets, or at least partially prepared, is beginning to make sense…

    @Manhattan – Thanks for that. I’ll go have a good look through now. 🙂

    @D-Jam – It sounds like you completely understand where I/he is coming from. I’m not to familiar with these megamixes, but that friend of mine has really made me think about playing live. It makes a lot of sense, but, as you said, win the crowd, rule the scene. I was always a firm believer that playing live is 90% song selection, 10% performance.

    @Mike Check – Awesome username by the way. I think it kinda depends on what your style of DJing/performing is. He does very heavy dubstep, so, when he plays live, it’s advertised as a dubstep night, and people who go to it mostly have an interest in dubstep. They’d rather hear awesome original tunes and grade A remixes, than care about how it’s mixed. The other friend of mine that was there plays a pretty good selection of house. He tends to do the odd remix of current chart songs that people will recognise more, but his mixing live is absolutely spot on. I’m going down the route of electrohouse. So i’ve got one or two remixes of charty songs, but they tend to be the acapella over some mixed about electrohouse song, like “you got the love acapella” with Wolfgang Gartner’s The Champ. With the remixes I do, I make them separately in ableton, render that track, and then in my dj session, just mix in the track. After talking to this buddy of mine, having them as separate acapella and song tracks/channels would actually be better live, as it would allow me to filter/effects on the song or the acapella.

    I can really see both sides to the argument.

    Yeah I raised that point too. He was fairly adamant that in that case, he could swap out tracks easily, or just switch to mixing live. Thing is, I can see both sides to the argument.
