    During the last minute of any song you’re trying to transition from, an invisible light pops up. COME TALK TO THE DJ.

    Rock people can be douchey, but here lately my most annoying hangabouts are dubstep kids. They seriously throw tantrums when I don’t play more than one floor-clearing WOMWOMWOMWOMWOMWOMWOMWOMWOMWOMWOMWOMWOM song in the middle of an ass-to-crotch rap set. When I do play almost anything, they stand off to the side of the dancefloor and do their whatever that is dance. Thanks for kicking people in the shins as everyone else bails.

    How Do ‘You’ Prepare Yourself Psychologically for Your DJ’ing ?
    Does Your Gear have to be ‘Set Up’ in a Particular Manner;
    Do You have ‘Equipment’ that has become your Tools and you ‘Must’ use;
    Do You Take Some ‘Time’ to Relax Psychologically Before you ‘Perform’ and How Much;
    Do You have a Ritual that you Follow Before you ‘Leave Home’; or Begin Mixing ‘At Home’;
    How Much Time (if any) do You take to Practice Your ‘Art’;
    Do You ever Read or Follow Tutorials to ‘Better Your Best Practice’

    – Show up & smile. Sometimes, it’s a bit more of a work-up, but most of the time this is a great start to any show.
    – Nah. I generally set up and break down in the same order, just so I keep up with everything.
    – My personal rig has 2 CD players and a Numark DDS. I’m partial to it, but just as easily use Cue/Virtual DJ.
    – Whenever I get in the car to drive, I start blanking out stupid real world shit that won’t matter for the next X hours. I don’t need to worry about whether or not we ordered some music for customers when I’m not at the store.
    – Yeah, but it mostly involves checking equipment and cables. I’m terrible about forgetting shit that matters. Also PHONE/KEYS/INSULIN. When I’m driving to a show, I spend time flipping through the radio on a 2-3 minute/1-2 song rotation. When I’m at home practicing, I just plug in and go.
    – I listen to music 90% of my day. Usually, I turn on the rig and fart around for an hour or two at least once every couple days.
    – I listen to other people’s sets/mixes. And I listen to my own sorta obsessively, since that’s the easiest way to hear where I’m fucking up.

    for me there`s a difference between a musician and a dj. a musician creates music out of nowhere regardless if its a techno producer or a guitar player or a hornblower. on the contrary a dj plays music, mixes it together, but he always needs “music” for his art which has already been made/created. without music he could not do anything.

    So people in orchestras aren’t musicians unless they write and play their own music?

    Listen for on and off-ramps. Most rap songs have a section where nobody talks. If nothing else, work your phrasing around choruses. If what you’re playing has a 4-bar chorus and what you’re bringing in has a 4-bar intro (or if the chorus is 8 bars and incoming only has 4, you can play the intro twice) you can hear what I’m talking about. A lot of times, the last chorus has an outro – your incoming song would optimally start the first verse on the first beat of the outro.

    Off-ramps are everywhere. Once you figure out how a song breaks down, you can start trying new ways to get in and out of it.

    Here’s an example of what I mean. Take:

    Taana Gardner – Heartbeat (I use the 5:00 version because that’s the first one I heard.)
    The Who – Eminence Front

    I forget the speed difference, but pitch lock both and make them the same speed. At the 3:00 mark of Heartbeat, if you start the first pulse of Eminence Front with the heartbeat, they line up. You can ride Heartbeat out until the first verse of EF and for as long after that as you’re willing to babysit the beat.
