In the summer months I dj 6 nights a week in a club. It can be tempting when get offered free drinks and shots etc. The main club i dj at the boss says im a better dj when im drinking 😉 I never have more than a 2-3 drinks and a few shots here and there over the night. I DJ every single Friday and Saturday nights and over a summer season in the Costa Del Sol and at the end of the day its my weekend too so getting into the groove of the club is ok if you can handle it drink wise is ok. I am also in charge of hiring other DJ’s and in the past young big shot DJ’s have gone over the top with drink and been to pissed to continue so I have been called to take over for them which makes them look unprofessional and ultimately they are not hired again.

I think maybe you should be asking if you have DJ’ed while using drugs? Most clubs people frequent these days prob half of them are on Coke or E’s. I have DJ’ed while under the influence of both 😉

Well my point was that offering to do it for free shows confidence in your abilities. I do 6 gigs a week in the summertime 4 of which pay a lot less than i should take. The way I look at it its all good practice doing a 4 hour set is a good training every season I consider myself a better DJ.

Id say pick something that makes it obvious your a girl. Not many girl DJ’s about you may have more of a chance getting booked if they know your a girl. Instead of DJ Elixr maybe call your self Miss Elixr

I have been experimenting with gimics recently. I have a couple of hand puppets (Sooty & Sweep) should see their faces when out of the top of your booth sooty pops up and starts head banging. I have also picked up a Chinese fighter pilots helmet from ebay for $25 it fits a small pair of headfones in them so I can mix properly with it on looks cool as f*ck with the black lens down top gun style 😉

Back to topic I like to always have a couple of crowd filler tunes of each genre up my sleeves just in case they drift off the dance floor.

Golden rule get the girls dancing if you do that the guys will come to dance and chat up the girls if they like the tune or not 🙂

You know what I do? Instead of giving them a sales pitch of I can do this and that etc show them your confident in your abilities to get the place jumping by telling them you will do the first gig for free. Shows some balls and means they have nothing to lose if your crap then no big deal they dont pay you. Make sure you do your research about the venue and customers etc and try to get feedback about how your playing during the gig if they like it etc nothing like playing the wrong vibe and getting fired cos they dont like your music even though you may be doing nothing wrong.

I am always nice as pie with any of the public tell them what they want to hear and let them down nicely. Last thing you want is some drunken idiot pouring a drink in your mixer cos you have told them to F*ck off. At the end of the day your paid to keep them happy and its a big deal if you play the song they want as they walk away from the whole night thinking what a cool DJ etc. No reason why you cant pick a dirty grimy remix of what they asked for so its a compromise

I have done it a few times minmal house with drummers and guys on trumpets keys etc. Not sure what the public thought I thought it was ok but practice is key can turn out a bit of a nightmare if they just Jam along with you with no thought to what your trying to produce.
