I’m impressed that the guy making the video didn’t stop the cat. The second it got too close to the tonearm I would have been on it!

Sorry to hear that mark – I guess it’s just one of those rare and random things which happens to gear now and then. But what a bummer that happened so close to the gig, especially when you were looking forward to using it. I can’t really answer your question about repair times, but hope it gets sorted with Novation and you stick with it. I fired mine up for a gig over Christmas – havn’t used it much since I got my VCI-380 – and had a blast with it. Let us know how you go.

    Cheers.

Well done – you must be stoked. And you had some pretty good lessons in there as well. Great first gig story.

I love Egypt, was there back in the early 90s (as you can see from my avatar)
Have great memories of Dahab. It was pretty sleepy back then, what’s it like now?

Oh, and I’m from Adelaide, Australia originally. Lived in Perth for a couple of years before spending 9 years in the US, most of that time in New York. Now living in Melbourne, Australia.
This city has such a fantastic music scene, from clubs to live music. What’s your taste? Good chance you’ll find it here.

I love that story Menno. Everyone who calls themselves a DJ should have to do that before they can truly own that title. I would much rather be in that bar than one where some guy is doing all the right technical stuff but with boring tunes.
That vibe is kind of what I do at my monthly gig. For anyone who remembers The Goodies, I played that theme song (the second series funkier version) at my Christmas gig and got big thumbs up. (Note to self – buy Inspector Gadget theme song!)

I get it too Chris,it’s a pain. I make sure to get my gear up as high as possible, and also do regular strengthening exercises. If you have pain at your age, now is the time to be doing exercise to help address it, as it will only get worse as each year goes by, sorry to say. And I would recommend a good Physical Therapist or Chiropractor instead of a doctor. A lot of GPs, if they can’t cut it or give drugs for it, don’t know what to do.

Still I’d like to add that you don’t lose ANYTHING by first of all getting a small, cheap all-in-one controller (only for a few weeks to get the basics down). When u burned through it, just sell it off on ebay, craigslist whatever.

See, you think that DJing would be living your dream (and maybe it is, I’m not the one to tell you otherweise) – I’m just gonna say from my OWN experience, that oftentimes things seem different from the outside (even if you think you know everything about it) than when actually DOING them. Motivation BEFORE doing something doesn’t count for much, you need the motivation once you’re doing it.

I thought, even after joining, that I wanted to go down the specops route in the military. But guess what: A couple months in an infantry batallion totally cured me of that belief. How many people have you met that were highly motivated to start lifting weights, get their diet in order, start running… and 4 weeks in that motivation was gone. (But a pair of running shoes is only 10% of the cost of a CDJ … 😉 )

Not saying that it must happen for you, but why not make sure before spending that kinda cash?

Anyways: good luck with your endeavours 🙂

    Wisdom, right there.

Also, consider buying second hand. You’ll get more bang for your buck and there is a very good chance that you’ll be turning over your first mixer/controller/CDJs within a relatively short amount of time as your work out what gear it is you REALLY want, now that you have some skills. Buying second hand means you don’t lose so much money on the changeover, and there is a ton of it out there.

Can’t you just use your trim, or gain, control to get the level the same as the other deck?

In an ideal world, you’d have time practicing with your controller before doing a live gig. But I also think when opportunity strikes, sometimes you gotta just go for it. Remember, the main thing is song selection. Dayvue is right. If youre not doing a bunch of snappy mixing tricks, I don’t think that will be a problem to the punters. They’re there to drink and hang out with their friend in a chill atmosphere, not see you going the Jesus pose. Just focus on getting your music right. If you knock the residency back you never know, they may just ask the next guy to do it and then you’ve lost this golden opportunity.

Well, as he said, it’s a 150k drive to get the rental gear, so is trying to avoid that. But maybe it’s worth doing the first time becuase you could use it as an opportunity to ask the rental guys for tips. If they’re nice guys you may get some good advice from them.
Also, don’t be afraid to look at buying second hand gear. There is a ton of it out there and it gives you a chance to buy a good brand, and get extra kit, for the same money as new.

I think in your situation buying second hand is a good idea. Easy to turn it over without losing much money if it’s not for you. I got a Twitch second hand and it’s perfect. I am also into high end hi-Fi and most of my gear is second hand. Allows me to get much bigger bang for my buck. Good luck with your purchase, hope you love it.

Great advice from Zen Master Terry. 🙂
The other thing is that I read somewhere recently that you get better at something quicker by doing more regular practice sessions, even if they’re short, than a longer session less often.
So it may be easier to fit short, sharp sessions at the decks, even a quick half hour before bed, into your lifestyle.
I’m in advertising and have two kids, so that’s pretty much all I get most of the time to keep me switched on to it.

Indeed, would love to hear where you think the best place for this music is.
It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that (electro) swing!
