OMG Flashback time! I used to own one of these and ended up selling it on Ebay to a guy in California. This is a beautiful thing but its also Roland and if you know Roland gear, you know what that statement means. Its complicated to figure out. The reason you got this cheap is probably because of Memory. These take a type of SD memory card that isnt made anymore and the space is fairly small. However you can export your sounds using Midi if I recall correctly.

Its supposed to be able to control stage lights and some infrared beam can act like a KAOSS pad. I never tried either. Making a 16 bar loop is alot of work but the built in sounds and loops are really amazing. Once you figure out sampling you can get pretty good at slicing loops and building them into songs. But it is a serious process. I would advise exporting all the sounds to your computer and then using those as WAV samples in Ableton. Im a dumb ass because I didnt think to do that before I sold it. Funny thing I got mine used off Craigslist so there is a small possibility that you have yourself a holiday fruitcake that keeps getting passed along!

Also, for some reason I cant determine, Track B is lower in volume than Track A in my headphones. All mixer settings are identical and I can still detect less volume. Any ideas?

I may have a similar problem. I have the same settings checked but since the last upgrade of Traktor my Gain knob has not been acting the same. The Master gain is set at 1 or 2 o clock. When I load a track the gain button indicator turns BLUE and the dial will auto set itself sometimes at Max. When I click the indicator button it turns Orange and then the Gain is reduced (-1db for example).

In previous version of Traktor this didnt happen. By default the light was Orange and the auto gain would fluctuate btw. -2 to +3 give or take. I never had a Master Output redline problem. Now I have it all the time.

*sigh* Thats the kind of answer I’d expect from a father who tells his kids “We got icecream at home.” Can I hear from people who have either device?

Here’s the thing; when Im playing out I will sometimes drop a Remix or Non-radio version of a song and most often people dont like it or look at me funny. Never will forget the night I played a Levels remix and a girl screamed, No not the Skrillex remix! It was funny but lesson learned. So in theory these devices are great but I have yet to see anyone use them in practice in a club setting where you’d normally here dance hits.

Im not referring to a concert venue where multiple DJ’s are playing various flavors of Dub or DnB or Ean Golden’s CNTRL event. Just typical weekend bar with chicks and dudes is it wise/practical/whatever to drop samples over a song using an F1 or 3D or are these toys best left at home?

I watched Phils YouTube video about the 3D and it was very informative but the question still remains.

I had an equally frustrating night as well. I got hired to play at a skate rink for the 11pm-1am adult skate. I was asked to play “JB Skate Music” which in Chicago means James Brown, 70’s Funk, R&B Soul music. I spent the week putting together sets from 80bpm – 110bpm which is a good skate tempo. A girl (who I thought was the promoter) kept coming up to me all night complaining about the music. It was as if she didnt know any of the tunes or we weren’t on the same page with JB Skate. Turns out she said to me after an hour; “When I say JB Skate I dont mean James Brown, I mean JB Skate music.” Seriously, she said this. I asked over and over the names of some groups or songs and she couldnt but kept showing me her iPhone play list. I didnt recognize anything. She brought a stack of 4-5 CD’s and asked me (while playing) if I could listen to the CDs and pull something off that. In the end I realized she listens to alot of her DJ friend mix CD’s and doesnt know song titles, names or anything. It got so frustrating that for the last 15 minutes I put in a CD and let it play. It was the DJ’s own production of beats with partial song loops. No wonder she didnt know anything – and it certainly wasnt James Brown.

I appreciate the answer but clubs are not the only objective. You dont walk into Verizon and say, Hey guys let me play your Holiday party this year! I already hit bar owners and such with a CD, card etc. I know they arent looking at ads. My question is; who IS and where?

I use SoundCloud and I’ve never had a problem getting songs taken down. I use MixCloud but dont like it as much. No one mentioned this but I also use PodOMatic which is linked to a Podcast I have setup in iTunes. I have a bigger problem with YouTube when I try to upload visual mixes and they get removed at upload.

I use iDJPool record pool. They have a ton of music and a reasonable rate plan. Only downsides are no album art and you cant preview tunes. Just download the weekly folders for everything.

Thanks again for the help w/ this. The gig went as well as could be hoped. I was at a club that features original music bands and DJs follow. The 2 bands (actually almost all the bands that play) sound like rough early Seattle grunge B-Side Pearl Jam before it was good. The touching moment was when one band guy dedicated the next song to Hurricane Sandy survivors. I mean you could really feel the…..something. Anyway, I played for all of an hour because its pretty typical that when the bands are done they leave and so do the few people that came to see them.

I opened with the Dub/Bro step and then into Deep House. I recorded the sets and they are uploaded to Podomatic and Soundcloud if anyone is interested; https://soundcloud.com/djpossess

Thanks for the input. I had to laugh when you asked if I was talking about Dubstep or Brostep. There’s a Brostep? LOL I think I’ll approach it like House and bring in the soft intros on one track while repeating 4-8 bars on the ending track. And I’ll just have to experiment w/ the bass vs. the snare and see what works. On a side note I came across a track by Madeon called Icarus and really love it. Check it out.

I use iDJPool and like the previous post said, there’s no pre-listen but the site has alot of advantages. I pay for the $50 version to get Billboard, Dance, Urban. The collection goes back about 3 years so there’s a ton of music. My system is to download the newest Billboard songs to the same folder so any duplicates are skipped. Each Genre has a weekly folder dated with new songs. These include Clean, Explicit, Radio, Club, Extended. So, I sort by Radio to filter out the various versions. Then download these (usually at work during the day). Then I listen to them on the commute home. It works very well for me.

PS – To clarify #2 – I had a set list planned with Top club bangers for later in the night. The waitress and manager wanted Hits, Hits, Hits but if I did that then I’d blow my wad too early. So I stuck to my plan of 2-3 hits and then 4-5 other songs. I probably played every Guetta hit single including Memories twice. It was a 6 hour gig.
