If you want a very cheap (free) way to quickly just start playing with beats, give RemixLive from Mixvibes a spin. Available for iOS and Android and possibly even PC/Mac I think.

Even if you don’t like it, your kids will live it! In this case be sure to get some hearing protection though 😛

Hi Kryst, welcome to the forums. Hope you’ll enjoy your time here!

in reply to: Mixed in key? #2483631

Clearly this is a hard question. All kinds of factors play a role in that decision, like what you are trying to get it to do, what that is worth to you, what budget you have, etx.

Because the real question you need to ask is “is MiK worht it for ME”. And that is something we can’t answer for you.

As for RekordBox and cue points, at this time it’s only Serato and Traktor. That said, I think it’s fair to assume that soon they will add RekordBox to that list.

How is mono not fun? A large number of venues will be on mono!

in reply to: Using two seperate soundcard for djing. is it possible? #2482761

If you can “aggregate” both your built-in sound-card and the Focusrite, then in your software you should be able to use one for cue and the other for master.

On Mac aggregate is a built-in function, for windows I think Asio4all allows it.

When it comes to controllers there is no “best”. They all have their own features that determine if it can be the best for YOU. They all have the necessary features to get you through the first part of your DJ-ing career.

As for Traktor, the reason there are a lot of non-NI controllers on Traktor still is because in the early days a few years ago Serato was a VERY closed system and Traktor was sold with many non-NI controllers. Since then Traktor has stopped working with 3rd party manufacturers of controllers and is more and more focusing on their own eco-system. And it’s not unthinkable that when the next big upgrade hits they might even exclude third party controllers altogether.

Also, when you use non-NI controllers with Traktor the jog wheels will not function as well as with an NI controller.

Finally, if you want to use non-NI (up-to-date) controllers with Traktor you are totally dependent on either the controller manufacturer and/or the Traktor community for mappings and such.

This is also true for the R-series of Pioneer, which will work only with RekordBox, as opposed to (for example) the SX, which is optimized for Serato, but will work with VDJ, Mixvibes Cross, DJay Pro, RekordBox of course and many other programs, often natively.

So, it’s just not a good decision to use those controllers with Traktor. Better to look for a used S2 or S2mk2 if you want to go the Traktor route. Plenty of them out there.

    +1 on that.

Varies, like you said. We had dramatic experiences and we have had great experiences. Usually the more established artists are actually easier to work with as the have less to “prove”.

The venue/organizer/whoever foots the bill is the one that pays me for my gear. Should my gear be used for others, there will be a surcharge and if it needs operating, those hours get paid on top of my DJ hours. I started doing that a long time ago. If they don’t like it, go out to a rental company and have them deliver, setup and operate. That is not gonna be free by a long shot either.

Most important is that all that stuff is communicated in ADVANCE! I truly hate being ambushed. In advance many things can be discussed, decided and arranged. On the day itself I become pretty selfish. My stuff takes priority over helping out others. It’s that simple.

If I know there is a sing a song writer who needs to plug his guitar and mic into a mixer and I know in advance, I’ll gladly bring my small 6-channel Yamaha and even help the guy hook up (I’ll get there half an hour early so I can set up in my own time and then help him.

I am an easygoing (I think) and helpful guy, but don’t like (feeling) being taken advantage of.

Does it happen when you have the speakers connected to the controller but the controller not connected to anything else?

in reply to: dvs systems #2481841

Depending on the controller, if it’s DVS-enabled you can use that, otherwise you may need a (serato)supported sound card. You will also need the DVS add-on for Serato.

In play it’s transparent, the software will let you switch per deck if you want deck, dvs or vinyl thru I think (haven’t done much DVS on Serato, so rusty here). Effectively you should be able to use all of it like an integrated system.

in reply to: Song selection/playlist at the event… #2481831

You have hit upon the pinnacle of DJ-ing: “knowing what must come next”. It’s hard-earned experience that will give you these skills. Can’t be taught (altough there are great ways of music discovery that will help you gather the tracks you think you can and will use. Look for articles on both the main site and these forums).

So, there is no template or pre-fabricated list to tell you what to bring to a party, let alone what to play and in what order. Sure there are some general guidelines, many taught in the courses here, but at the end of the day it’s going out to play and getting the experience.

Effectively (general tip) the best combination is preparing for a gig by knowing what kind of theme/genre is expected (if any), what kind of crowd, what time slot, if you are not the only DJ what other DJ’s are coming and what are they playing, what is the venue like, if the venue has these gigs more often what is played there. Etx.
Once you know that, you can make a selection of tracks to bring. Typically you will want to bring about twice the amount of tracks you really need. Rule of thumb is 20 tracks an hour playable, so take 40 tracks for every hour you are playing.
Divide the tracks you are taking in mini-playlist (3-5 tracks) that go well together.

During the evening you can play something from a mini-playlist and if the crowd likes it, play some more without the stress of finding those next matching tunes. Again, much has been written about dividing energy and such, so not gonna go into repeat mode there. Most important is to watch the crowd.

Trust you Californians …. Everyone else started a wannabe bedroom DJ, but no … if you live in California you want to be a backyard DJ LOL. Guess something to be said for living outdoors (although the neighbor issue could be a tad bigger).

That said, welcome to the forums. Enjoy your time here!

in reply to: XDJ-RX set up idiots guide please!!! #2481701

Streaming is never a serious option imho. USB-connected laptop with RekordBox DJ on it would be much preferred.

I am not too familiar with your controller. Bit dazed by your remark that tags are in the comment field. In which case they are not tags, they are (duh) the comment field. I think RekordBox let’s you export whatever column you want, so if you export the comment column you should (this seems logical, but again from a theoretical point of view) be able to see the comments on your XDJ-RX.

Keep in mind that RekordBox and RekordBox DJ are two different things. In order to DJ with DJ software and the RX as a DJ-controller, you will need RB DJ (switch in the software from Export to Performance mode).

Other than that, I hope some of the RX-owning members here can help you out a bit further.
