I’ve wanted to DJ since I saw Beat Street in 1984. Unfortunately I couldn’t afford decks back then.

In the early 90s, I was buying maxi-singles and even vinyl of some of the bigger house tunes being released, and would make compilations from them. My brother finally said I should pick up some used decks and try it. So I ended up buying a used pair of Technics 100 belt-drive tables and a cheap Gemini mixer. I still have that mixer as a keepsake.

Only ones I can think of are Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren, and Fatboy Slim.

I like PvD and AvB because they still make and play a lot of energetic trance, which I love. Fatboy Slim I like simply because of how he plays his sets. He’ll play right across the board and change up genres to keep the crowd jumping.

I love Derrick May as a DJ, but the only productions I really loved of his was his old Rhythm Is Rhythim stuff.

I dunno. I usually pack some mashups and good remixes of popular tunes to pull up when I see the crowd isn’t feeling the set.

Depends on the evening, night, and what’s playing. My way is to just bring floorfillers as my backup.

One favorite I like to pull up is Energy Flash by Joey Beltram.

Four hours was the most I did.

Was playing at a Chicago club known as The Drink. That night a promoter was throwing a party in the back area, and most of the DJs he booked were used to playing short sets of Chicago hardhouse. Granted it was around 1999 or 2000, and Chicago hardhouse became passe to many clubbers while I was the lone wolf playing the more “newer” sound of trance.

So the other guys played short sets, and I seemed to win the crowd over with trance. The promoter asked me to play longer and I did…til closing. Great night.

Shortest set I did was 20 minutes. It was supposed to be an hour, but I was scheduled as the LAST set of the night at an all-night rave. 5AM til 6AM. Unfortunately everyone decided to call it a night at the beginning of my set and within 10 minutes everyone left. The promoter decided to just call it quits and close up shop. He made it up to me at another event with a better spot, but I was disappointed that night.

Generally though when anyone offers me a 30 min or less set I’ll tell them to take that time and disperse it among the other DJs so there’s transition time.

Meh…some might disagree, but it’s the love and the doing that make someone a DJ.

If you’re even on a free version of VDJ and doing it, learning, crafting yourself, then you’re a DJ in my book. Hopefully we can help you evolve into a mode where everyone might agree with my viewpoint.

I envy the Ibiza gig, and how you were part of the Madchester scene. I’d love to hear any Summer of Love stories if you have any of them. That time always fascinated me.
