The best way to use the air horn is to couple it with a your dj name drop. Here’s how to work it into a song:
Let the song build up, and then as you are just about to get to the drop, cut in with the air horn and your name drop. BUT, here is the most important thing, make sure your airhorn and name drop are WAY WAY WAY louder than the track whose drop you just aborted.
Brilliant! The crowd will look angry, confused, and annoyed, but this just means they are LOVING YOU! Do this for at least every song, if not a few times in each individual track.
Sad thing is, a classic hip hop radio dj did this while dj’ing before a hip hop show, and it was effing tragic.
Daryl NorthropParticipanthey man! Thanks for the detailed breakdown. I am really looking forward to the multi-effects as well. Good to hear the remix on the fly capabilities are better as well.
Play on!

August 13, 2013 at 12:45 pm in reply to: The Adaptive DJ,the future, past, present or not needed? #43132Daryl NorthropParticipantI’ve played at several clubs in the DC area, and they have all been fine with me and the other DJ’s bringing our own midi controllers/laptops, or cdj’s. I use a small Behringer mixer for us all to plus into for seamless transitions, and then we just plug directly into their PA. Easy as pie 🙂
Plus, at some of the venues, their in-house mixing boards and equipment look beat to hell, so I don’t trust them to work properly.
Daryl NorthropParticipantI’ll def check that! Thanks!
Daryl NorthropParticipantYes, there is a max file size. 320mp3’s work fine, but wav’s over a certain size won’t work. I think if they are less than 100 megabytes, you’re ok, but check to be sure.
Daryl NorthropParticipantgoogle music lets you store up to 20,000 tracks
Daryl NorthropParticipantWhy are all of you watching the DJ in the first place? 😉
Daryl NorthropParticipantStaz – good points! And no, not rocking the 80’s frat bro look, thank god!
Daryl NorthropParticipantSorry – I did not express myself clearly. I agree – don’t mess with the house PA. And, setting up the booth and having your own monitor is a great idea. My suggestion was that an early arrival and playing through a few mixes could have exposed the idiosyncrasies of the house system, and given him a chance to compensate before his set started, and not have to scramble around/experiment on the fly while trying to play to the crowd.
Daryl NorthropParticipantIf at all possible, I try to get there and do a sound check – mix through a couple of tracks. If you are the opener, this may be an option for you depending on the venue.
Daryl NorthropParticipantthe only other option would be hitting the ‘sync’ button every 2 bars or so. Not ideal, but if you are forced to use tractor and can’t view the waveforms in the format you need…..

Lulz.
Daryl NorthropParticipantDef start with music you already love, like the other people have said. Also, it’s good to hang out with other dj’s who are beginners, and others that are more experienced. I always learn new things when I do this.
Daryl NorthropParticipantI’m 41 out here in the DC area and trying to get things going. Have got a regular monthly EDM night at a non-profit art space, and have gotten a couple of gigs. You never know what doors can open! And yes, I do this while holding down a regular 9-5. No kids though, so that helps.
