My DJ software is Serato Scratch Live, & this is why

    1. It was passed on from my great grandfather to my grandfather, who passed it on to my father who gave me the strong advice what you can’t do with 2 decks you won’t do with with 4 🙂

Just messing…I like SSL cause it feels natural for me with my style of play. I don’t push too many buttons, less is more for me.

I have tried almost all the DJ programs I can…PCDJ, Mixx, Traktor, VDJ, Torq. Despite Native Instruments massive marketing engine which is trying to create a strong doubt in me that “Traktor is the way & the only way” I find myself going back to scratch live all the time. So I am a 98% SSL user.

Hi Gbadegesin (aka DJ Tade), How far na? Great to see a fellow Nigerian here.

On seeing D-Jam’s reference to Nigeria (“Naija”- as we Nigerians call it) in the post being referred to i asked him for clarification and he promptly sent me an email. Now he is doing this openly as a topic so much respect to him.

Regarding the “Naija” scene, its very massive. Most of the major Pop superstars have performed at concerts in Nigeria at some point in the last 10 years or so. We might not have an underground/above ground EDM scene but we listen to everything plus the naija indigenous tunes (fuji, afrobeats, juju, apala etc) hence we are more rounded :O
Our clubs don’t close till 6am. I remember when i first went to a club in Europe and the music stopped at 2:45am i was shocked.

When i lived in Nigeria i was my Uni’s DJ holding down all the house parties and concerts. I was also a concert/show organizer/promoter. I played at clubs before the wind of migration blew me to Dublin and i still play at Nigerian parties here.

@gbadegesin very nice observation with the tempo of naijapop tunes slowly creeping up. The David Guetta influence i will say (yeah i mentioned the forbidden name and actually giving him credit for pushing “electropop” beyond borders). Most songs are now well over 120bpm. 10 years ago most songs were in the hip-hop/r&b bpm range. I like this current phase of Nigerian music though.

i play on afrijamzradio.com every 1st and 3rd Tuesday 21:00Hr GMT for an hour you should check it out when you can.

PC DJ —–> Virtual DJ 4 (or some version like that) —–> Virtual DJ 6 ——> Traktor Pro —–> Virtual DJ 7 —–> Serato Scratch Live and i think i’m home now

Serato Scratch Live mostly and when i’m feeling too lazy to beatmatch i use the Virtual DJ 7. It works with my SL DVS set-up. Serato timecodes can control VDJ (though with some latency issues) and the SL3 sound card works with VDJ 7 too.

I think the style of play really dictates the kind of set-up too. I use Serato Scratch Live and i am happy with it…for now.

I’m from the two decks and a mixer era. I play a mostly hip-hop, r & B, afro-pop and top-40 dance/pop. I dont use too many effects nor juggle cue points Ean Golden style. Just nice tight blends, chops and stabs, baby scratch, back spins, a lil beat juggling and loads of EQ-ing.

I just let the music play and my “effects” will really be the kind of music i play. Playing a tune that will make the crowd go “Ape” is really an effect too.

When i initially moved to software I tried PC DJ which i didnt really have any idea of what they were trying to do, then Virtual DJ which i used for about 2-3 years playing straight from my laptop without any controllers or decks. Thats the simplest effective Set-up ever. Then i tried Traktor Pro for a few weeks but it just looks like some hi-tech NASA space control program to me, so much stuff to do on it. I still have them all except PC DJ.

Then i bought Serato even without trying it out. I find the Serato layout to be simple and enough for me. I dont mind the fact that i have to still use my pitch control to beatmatch its part of the game. I even bought a Kontrol X1 to use with it and to me that has opened up the Digital DJ in me to another level. I love my turntables to death.

I believe flexibility is the key for any DJ. Know your Set-Up but also have a basic or good enough idea about the alternatives.

The people dont care if you use Serato nor Vinyls all they want to do is have a good time.
