My new favorite is the Bose F1 series. Don’t let the 12-inch LF drivers fool you into thinking they lack low end. The Bose rep was demoing them at my local Guitar Center. I thought the rig had plenty of low end thump. Then he said,”Now let’s hear how it sounds with the F1 subs.”

Pricing is competitive with JBL PRX series, QSC, and the EV ETX series.

Yes, yes and yes. I’m a huge hockey fan.

Both of you have valid points. I will forgive any DJ for not beat matching. Heck, it’s better to not beatmatch than it is to try and fail miserably. Besides, in the name of “mixing” we should be switching up our transitions too.

Even music selection is forgivable due to its totally subjective nature.

But stealing music is just plain wrong. Besides, high quality files played through a decent sound system just thumps harder, and what DJ wouldn’t want that?

The struggle is real. I have an 8 year old daughter. I did the single parent thing for 6 years along with a full time day job and a twice weekly gig running sound for local cover bands.

I chose Traktor due to its iOS implementation, so I could practice mixes on the go during spare moments, and have a similar software/hardware experience when using the S2 with the iPad/iPhone/PC. My home DJ/production rig fits in the corner of the living room.

The real challenge is making the time to devote to DJing. I DJ for my daughter sometimes, and if she ever wants to learn how, I’ll be more than happy to teach her.

The filter at full kill gets me too!

Slightly less off-putting is when I have the bass EQ killed when I do a hard cut to the next track. And when you slam it like that, you want the next track to come in with oomph.

Additionally, if you have your DJ library organized in iTunes, the playlists you have in iTunes can be synced to you i/pod/phone/pad, burned to CD or put on a USB stick very quickly and easily. Take your music with you everywhere. You can get to know new tracks during your commute, chores, or chill time.

It’s also easier to edit tags and such in iTunes. The effectiveness of smart crates and the quality of your metadata are inextricably linked.

Guitar Center now has a 45 day return policy. If you got their Pro Coverage upgraded warranty, you have 60 days. Shouldn’t be a problem returning the speaker. They might be slightly annoyed at first, but if you are upgrading to a pair of K10s or K12s and adding the K181, they’ll go from piss to bliss in a heartbeat. As long as you’re polite, it shouldn’t be a problem swapping out the K8 even if it’s a little past the return period.

That being said, a pair of K8s and a sub will still keep the dance floor rocking. All the K series are rated at an honest 1000W. The only real gotcha is that if you ever want to run without the sub, you’ll need the bigger tops. I worked 2 weddings (150+ guests) with 2x K12 + 1x K Sub. Got lots of compliments on the way the system sounded.

I’ve been really impressed with Behringer’s X series mixers (X32, X Air). Behringer makes me think of Hyundai cars. When they were first introduced in the States and for many years after, they were junk. Now they’re solid as any car, less expensive than comparable models, and even the cool kids are driving them.

Open up NI Service center. You’ll see a whole bunch of them under downloadable content. There’s a wide variety of sets in different genres.

Remix sets are sold through Beatport, Traxsource, and a few other places.

IMHO, half the fun in using the mix decks is making your own sets.

Single dad, audio engineer, DJ and full-time employee. I usually have 2 gigs a week. I eat super healthy, stay hydrated with water, keep the booze to a minimum (or even abstain) on my “ironman days,” where it’s two consecutive days of day job and gig at night. I pick at least one off-night a week to go to bed early.

Take care of your body, because it’s the only one you’ve got. There will be other gigs to book. Learn how to say “no” to commitments that do not offer value in exchange for your efforts. Schedule time for rest and relaxation. It’s OK to not be a “type A personality.” You do not need to be productive every waking second. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is slow down or rest.

AFAIK, Traktor DJ for iOS only works with Native Inatruments hardware, specifically the S2 mk2, S4 mk2 and Z1 controllers.

    D-Jam,

A sound board won’t save the day if the signal coming from the DJ mixer/controller is pushing the inputs on the board into the red too.

Ignorance among DJs regarding sound knows no international boundaries, music genres, or subset of DJ, although mobile DJs tend to be a little better about it.

A job you can tolerate, and some steady income would also be a self-esteem boost. Be smart with your money and you can move out of your parents’ house (another self-esteem killer). Without children, and good time management skills, you will still have time to produce music and dj.

Traktor’s Remix Decks snap, quantize and sync one-shots and loops.

Yes. What DJ Vintage said. The Yamaha isn’t very expensive at all for the quality and features you get.

Pro audio gear IS DJ gear. You want the right tool for the job and you want the best you can afford.

Good speakers will last through a couple upgrade cycles of controllers, laptops and software. If there is any area you need to spend heavy on as a DJ, it’s your sound system.
