Any chance of getting a RSS feed for the forums as well? I have been looking to find one and I can’t seem to find one anywhere. Thanks for this feed though will help fill in my DJing tab so I don’t have to click on the same 5 sites 20 times a day lol. Keep up the great work man love the site.

I don’t think a DJ should ever “fake it” by any stretch of the imagination. Regardless of why your doing it. I understand that the big name DJ’s have very structured shows but that by know means gives them a license to phone it in. People pay big bucks to go see some of these DJs and honestly they should be giving it everything they’ve got that’s why we want to see them because they have taken the craft to new heights.

I had a fellow DJ friend who would prerecord some sets in a multitrack program just in case someone important was down to check out their set. Funny enough he went on to a residency and I didn’t so I guess that shows what I know. Just because it’s the path of least resistance does’t make it the correct one.

My wife is a Art Major who focused on Big Multimedia design projects. I’m sure she can come up with an kick ass show with great visuals, dancers, and theatrics but that doesn’t mean she knows one thing about the music I like to play/listen to. I hate to say it but money corrupts everything good. I know that it’s a necessary evil but once you start dealing in the amounts that these artists are it just becomes to tempting.

May I suggest a DDM4000 mixer. It’s 4 channels and almost every button, knob and slider can be mapped to anything you want in Traktor or you can keep it as is and use it for external mixing. Also you can do what I do and just mix it up. I use channels 1 & 2 for routing audio out to do external mixing and channels 3&4 to control FX banks 1&2. I do also use other equipment with this but I think it may be a good fit for you as it will grow with you instead of you growing out of it.

When you can afford to financially and ethically. Sometimes one comes before the other but money makes the world go ’round. If you disagree with the way the gig is being run or things that are going on there then by all means turn it down. If it’s not your style or conflicting dates or any number of other reasons.

The problems come in though if DJing is your only income coming in. You have less say in the matter. A paying gigs is a paying gig. I have found myself more times than I’d like to admit playing either some place that I didn’t approve of (for many different reasons) or playing music I hated. Simply because I needed to make money.

If you can afford to do both financially and without burning any bridges then by all means bow out. Better to do it sooner rather than latter as people get really irate when you do things last minute when it comes to gigs, at least in my experience.

I wrote an entire term paper on Piracy and the effects that it carries. This paper was directed to much broader subjects and more globally but still the points still hold true.

Basically what it all boils down to is that in some countries USA included there are absolutely no ways to obtain certain tracks by legal means. 90% of all music produced before 1950 will never be digitized. So essentially it’s lost. There are lots of tracks that were released five years ago that can’t be found legally. This drives people to seek other means. When these same people realize how simple it is to get that precious track they’ve been searching for most never look back. I just last week had to find a vinyl copy on discogs because the B side had a great remix that wasn’t available anywhere else.

For the average consumer piracy isn’t about money it’s about convince. Just look at how much the “Storage Locker” sites pull in every year simply by selling access to getting multiple files or getting the files faster. Most people are willing to pay for it they just want whatever it is to be how they want to consume it and not how someone thinks they should.

Record companies for years drove up the price of CDs to above 20$ a CD while at the same time cutting way back on the production of singles. This created the bubble we are now just getting out of. iTunes still does really well, while almost every mom and pop record store and most chain stores have long been shut down. The record companies need to stop making knee jerk reactions to problems and look to the future and they will make money and we will get out music.

Well Madeon first blew up with his remix of Deamau5 – Raise Your Weapon. This came out a few weeks later. The kid is talented that is for sure. Seems like he has embraced the newer technologies of the craft which is nice.

I use the actual program called dropbox. It gives you 2gb of space free. If that would be enough then illl do it that way I didn’t know if anyone had a better idea though.

I think the problem is that a lot of people (especially in America) don’t really like what most DJs play. They just happen to like the fact that wherever there’s a DJ there is usually someone of the opposite/same sex that they can get close to. Taking drugs “loosens” them up to be more open and has a symbiotic relationship with the music. Some people take the drug part way to far wether it be Alcohol or anything else. These are the people getting on the news. You never see a news report about a 10,000 people going to a festival and everyone had a great time. That would be boring. This report is the best one I have ever seen about any Dance Music event done by the general media.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvvNTq0IQaQ

Even that one still has some focus on the few people that go to those events looking to get high. Thankfully the reporter throws in at the end that by and large it’s all about the music. Which is my mantra. No matter what people tell me. I have mothers tell me I’m corrupting the youth of america when it gets out that I DJ. I generally only do house parties and the occasional small show. But people are set in their ways and don’t want to listen to someone with an opinion that differs from there own. I love music, all kinds of music. If it wasn’t for the music I don’t know where I’d be today. I know it wouldn’t be where I am now and that would suck.

@u31 no I’m saying the opposite. I think almost everyone here can dissect the subtle changes common in EDM. to my wife and her family though it just sounds like repetitive noise. That’s the comparison I’m trying to draw.
@D-Jam thank you for explaining it better than I could. Even in Europe where EDM is not only accepted but celebrated they still change the music to make it palletable to the masses.

If you think EDM is only for dancing and getting high then I don’t understand why your here? I don’t want to come off as mean but if you can’t feel and hear the differences in each track then why post on a dj forums? I am 100% sure that users on this forum can tell the differences in any two tracks. Certain tracks can make me wanna dance, sing, cry, laugh and sit in quiet contimplation. Especially today with the wide range of genres and sub-genres you quite literally have music for any mood/occasion.

I don’t understand why people think that EDM is just for drug heads. I get it that they’re the loudest and get the most attention but for every candy raver pill popper there are three legitimate fans.

Thanks for the info. I’ll look into those other cartridges. I am a little worried about record wear as I have a good size vinyl collection. I need a good all around cartridge. I have always heard about great things about the shures.

Why not get a DDM4000 it’s probably the most MIDI compatible mixer anywhere near it’s price point. It’s a great analog mixer as well. I picked one up maybe a year ago and haven’t regretted it even once.

I suggest getting a Mac Book Pro Laptop for djing while your out only for one simple reason: Stability. Say what you will in the Mac Vs. PC war and what not but the simple fact is that IBM let their patent run out on making the “PC” years ago in a shortsighted move that cost them billions if not more.

Apple still has there patents and is the only manufacturer of Apple products. Therefore software designers know what kind of hardware configuration their dealing with. Granted you could have a possible few hundred different combinations of hardware components on any given Mac be it laptop or desktop but that is no where near the amount of hardware combinations you will find in a PC. Your talking about developing software for hardware that literally anyone can make and to any specification (within reason) they want. The bug squashing logistics of that are insane.

I’m a PC person at heart. I built my first computer when I was 10 and have a killer custom built desktop to this day but I still will always DJ with a Mac. I’m not saying Mac’s don’t crash because they do. I’m saying that If I develop software for both platforms I can make a product that will work across all hardware with the smallest of problems possible if I have a finite list of possibilities.

The problem with PC’s is there are too many unknowns when coding software. You just build it for the most common current setups and play whack-a-mole with the rest as problems arise.

Your a little to late to the party as the 999$ white MacBooks have been discontinued as of this morning. I think some stores may have stock but if you really want one I’d act quick.
