I think $100 is a fair rate too.

Gig went well last night, laptop was flawless during performance of 4 hours. SO for the sake of search engines and offering a fix to traktor s4 audio glitches I would recommend trying out various USB drivers available to see if this improves the situation.

Well after trying just about everything, I just solved my problem by rolling back the usb driver from 3.1 to 3.0.3. Just in time for a gig tomorrow. I will still take my old laptop as a backup just in case.

    Hi Marco,
I think that you are just lucky and if it is bug free for you then that is a good thing. Unfortunately not all users have that experience. I have been using traktor for nearly 4 years also and for me the program is getting worse. I am open to the idea of PEBKAC but I have a done so many things to eliminate problems and I haven’t yet found a trick that works (one I haven’t tried yet is using a powered hub and that really is the last thing that I can do. I am also open to the idea that it maybe my S4 that is the cause of all my woes, it is 2 and half years old now and has been heavily ‘mobile’ gigged with.

I think it is just Traktor (yes, I am so jaded with it). It is such a flippant program with way too many bugs. I am buying Crossdj after this weekends gig and will start migration. (unfortunately I have too much prep to lose before this weekend). I am dreading the pops and crackles and glitches that are occurring more and more, that my crowd will have to put up with this weekend. 🙁

Here is a few thoughts on how to MC fast…….
Firstly, as an MC, you cannot be shy, in fact, a degree of eccentricity and extroversion wont go astray.
Join a public speaking group so you can get ‘speaking to an audience’ experience.
Crowd reading is very important, as you need to personally relate to strangers in a split second.
You need to be a compassionate comedian.
Mc’ing is delicate balance between being engaging and overbearing.
Mic techniques do require practice, knowing good mouth to mic distance accompanied with the need to become competent in preventing ppppppppopping or essssssssssssing and also giving what I call ‘rogue’ speech givers a 5 second mic lesson then riding the eqs and faders to prevent same and feed back too (people seem to love talking in right in front of and then putting the mic down, right next to the speaker).
If you are going to speak over music, turn the music down to at least a third of your voice level.
If you are introing a song, finish speaking before the vocals start. On a song ending speak when the fade out is a third of your vocal level.
I hope this is a good beginning!

Here is a conversation previously had on here about cruise mode (auto mix).
You will find all the rules and pitfalls of using this notoriously horrible feature.

Be careful with traktor on auto mix. It has 3 rules you must follow.
    1. Do not touch the faders under any circumstance. except for
2.Having one fader up full on the track you want to start with before you turn on auto mix.
3.When you turn off auto mix all faders will max out.

There are also settings such as fade in fade out time you can tinker with in settings.
I hold a huge long standing grudge with Traktor’s auto mix as it has embarrassed me on more than one occasion. It is poorly implemented, crude and unforgiving.

Yep. Orange light=autogain, blue light=manual gain.

Yep. That’s what a limiter is meant to do, jump on the obvious threshold breach but not impact at all on the overall sound.

A ‘brickwall’ waveform is not good except for advertising. That’s why ads appear louder than the tv show you are watching even tho they are not.

Another thing you could do is normalize all your tracks individually.
Which leads to the question… Why aren’t all tracks created to have a similar volume level?

    Good questions!
In my workflow, I hard limit first if it is required, then any other editing (eg fade out at end or removing silence at the start) that’s needed, normalize is the last thing I do before exporting. Stick with the default setting of -1.0dB.

I know some will ask why I hard limit at such a high value and the reason is because I like the transients in my wave form but will remove any clipping.
You could do what they do in TV ads, and hard limit to say -6dB then amplify rather than normalize the whole track to say -1 dB and then you have a really loud track that is well, loud but lacks any dynamics. (IMO this makes for a boring listening experience).

I know many who say auto gain isn’t very good but I find it gets it mostly right.

What you need to do is experiment with your levels, unfortunately the nature of the beast is the same levels wont always work all of the time.
    🙂

Simple questions, Complex answer that I will do in point form, I think.
    1. The tracks you play have already been mastered.
    2. I set my master volume at 0.0 dB and my rec gain at 0.0db
    3. You are correct to watch your level and keep below clipping.
    4. On clipping, the clip meter comes on 3dB below actual clipping.
    5. Turn your limiter off in tractor. give yourself 3-6dB headroom if you must use it. Good gain staging negates its use.
    6. When in audacity use your hard limiter effect and set to -1.0dB to remove clips.
    7. Only normalize your track if there are quiet tracks and loud tracks…. this will only happen if you have not gained your tracks properly during your set recording.
    8. A good wave form should look like….. My opinion only, but a good wave form should neither fill the area nor leave the area empty. There should be some nice ‘transients’ in there.
    9. If you have nailed the gains at the beginning signal in, and controlled them to the recorded signal, there should be very, very little to do in audacity due to point 1. It’s worth it to learn this point!
    Hope I have helped. 🙂

    Hope this helps.
