I think I figured it out. When you create the sample, Traktor will auto play it. You then need to stop it, unmute, click play and let it play one iteration of the loop, then stop, then play again – at this point the sample will appear in your All Samples collection.

    Simples?

Have as many different styles of music as you can muster so that you can change style if it is isn’t working out.

I think I was expecting something like “jump to cue point” or “play cue point” as my cues will be set up in advance usually. I can’t see me using a MIDI controller to add cue points as its too fiddly (at least with my setup anyway).

Clearly I’m a complete tool. Its working fine today! I think maybe you have to play deck A, then press Sync on B, then press Sync on A – then you’re good to go. Pressing play on deck A first should make it the Master.

I looked into promoting a night years ago and it struck me what a big gamble it was. Most places want money up front to book the room plus they keep the bar money. You tend to have to stump up money up front and can stand to lose it all if no one comes.

I’ve known a lot of people lose money this way. You would really have to try and guarantee that you can get a decent amount of people in.

What I would like is an application (or an add-on to Traktor) that allows you to define a number of “tags”. These tags would include anything you like, e.g. the mood of the track (“dark”, “uplifting”, etc) or certain aspects of the track (“vocals”, “breakbeats”) etc.

Then you could quickly tick a couple of boxes to tag the tracks. This would apply some kind of MP3 tag which you can the search on in Traktor. Say you wanted house with a latin beat, you would search for “latin”.

Nobody has had this problem? Damn. I must be doing something really stupid.

I never see the point of the colour coding system in Beatunes as you can’t do anything with it outside of Beatunes so whats the point? Thats another program I bought but never use (like Xtreme Mapping).

I have tried out Rekordbox too and it looks good but there is no integration with Traktor.

As time goes on I get more convinced that everything has to be done in Traktor. I use iTunes simply to store the music. Once it comes to tagging / playlists / comments etc you have to use Traktor. I’ve lost no end of MP3 tags that either iTunes or Traktor have deleted as they don’t play well together.

I guess it is all a ploy by Native Instruments…

Ha ha I was going to say that but thought I would steer clear of the Mac vs PC debate.

I’ve used both for DJing / music production and can vouch for the fact that Macs are just easier to use.

I would stay away from Windows 8 in the short term. New operating systems always have teething problems – particularly when it comes to audio for some reason. You find you get lots of drop outs or crashes.

That being said, consider things like screen size or the weight of the laptop if you have to carry it around. I reckon almost any laptop you buy now will be up to the job. New hardware (even budget stuff) is more than up to the demands of DJing software.

I would say don’t spend too much early on because chances are once you start doing it, you will get a better feel for the kinds of things that you want to do. Once you DJ on a regular basis you will start wanting to do more or do things differently.

Dr Dre Beats are just a fashion thing. I defy anyone to listen to both Beats and my Allen & Heath’s and say the Beats sound better.

Besides, mixing isn’t all about bass. In fact treble & mid-range is more accurate due to the sharper transients.

After a little more investigation it seems that when I press Sync the decks both Sync to the Master Tempo. The thing is on my Faderfox the Master Tempo is automatically set to whatever deck is playing (it switches the “master” automatically). Yet with the K2 I am always on the Master Tempo which I can’t change with the Tempo Fader.

Thanks Michael. I have assigned a button to the EQ Low Kill so I may just go with that. Normally I would do a smoother fade in / out but I don’t suppose this will hurt – I’ll have to experiment.

I’ve had a play with setting up the K2 and have now began to fiddle with a preset created by Mark EG. You can download it from the Xone blog site. It looks like a good preset that I can modify to suit my own needs.

There is a cool video on YouTube from some German guy who gets the buttons on the K2 to light up like a graphic equalizer as music is playing. Cool but nothing I would use for real.
