If you’re running windows, check out ‘The One’. http://one.dj/

I tried the beta, was ok, not for me, more used to using traktor/CDJ’s these days, but did used to use mixmeister back in the day, and it’s pretty similar, although a lot more advanced than the version of Mixmeister I used (5).

I also carry multiple ways to play music with me. SC2900’s with Engine are my main method, but if my laptop went down I have Thumb Drives with enough music to get me through a gig, plus a whole load of CD’s. If one (or both) SC2900’s went down, I have traktor on my laptop with my MC6000. Also carry a MP3 player with me. If both the SC2900’s AND the MC6000 went down I carry an NI Audio 2 that I could use traktor with, and I carry a spare 2 channel mixer with me.

Never had anything fail on me, but you can guarantee if I didn’t have a backup something would go wrong!!

I have this problem even when I don’t touch any faders! It happens as soon as I press the cruise button… I know that when cruise mode is on if you move any of the upfaders it transitions to the next song.

Anybody ever have problems where as soon as you turn cruise mode on it starts playing the other deck and proceeds to fade over to it, even though the song that is playing is nowhere near the end?? I’ve had this on a few occasions and have never worked out why it happens. Even if I turn off cruise and try it again (with/without different songs) it still happens.

Always seems to happen after I’ve already activated/de-activated cruise at least once during my set. Restarting Traktor fixes the problem.

If you’re looking for something cheap but good, the Sennheiser HD205’s as suggested above are good. I’ve had a pair for over 2 years now, sound quality is good and more than loud enough for what I use them for (Mobile DJing). They come with a leather pouch, I’ve only ever stored them in this bag and there’s hardly any signs of wear and tear. I find them nice and comfy to wear as well!!!

Max. no of people I’ve ever done a gig for is 360, but admittedly all of them were not on the dance floor at the same time. Maybe 120 max, so it doesn’t need to be ear deafeningly loud!! Just enough for the people on the floor to boogie to, and then the rest of the room to be able to hear.

The one thing that I have found with mine is that I always have to push the sub/s to get the balance right. I love the fact that the HD1801 is slightly smaller, and lighter!!! Mine are a bit of a pain to carry, but usually I just stick them on a trolley. Haven’t come across a venue yet where I’d have to carry them very far thank god!!

As I said, it’s gonna be a good while till I start looking into replacing them, but I’ll definitely keep these in mind!

I will take a look into them! I’m definitely looking at getting 12″ tops rather than 15″s. most places I play I take one sub to anyway, so having 12″‘s won’t be a problem. How much bass do the 12″‘s put out by themselves? Enough to cover a small room where a sub wouldn’t fit/be required?? Do you ever find a situation where you would need 2 subs?? The 18″ is a lot bigger than my 15″, but if I only needed one of them that would be great!!

My Wharfedale Titan 15’s and Titan sub A15 are generally fine for the venues I play at, but I definitely wouldn’t say they are high end speakers. They are the next thing on my to replace list, but probably not till next year. I bought them a few years ago now at a pretty decent price, and they have served me well for the past few years, but I would definitely like something with a bit more clarity and power.

I quite often visit the same 5 or 6 venues, so in my case they come in pretty handy.

It comes with an RTA mic. I have no idea how good it is though. I’ve never had it calibrated.

    Chuck,

That is a fantastic reply. I can tell that you know what you are talking about!!

I agree that we don’t need our stuff to sound 100%, it’s never going to happen with the equipment we’ve got, the differences in size and shape of the various venues we play at, and the time we have to set stuff up.

I will say that the driverack has considerably improved the sound of my equipment though. Yes, the auto EQ might not be perfect, but it does a good job of making my equipment sound better in most venues I play at. I also love that I can store presets for each venue, so that when I go back I can just load up the preset and give it a quick listen to make sure it sounds right.

I totally agree with the empty room/full room thing as well. Thing’s are always going to sound different when there are bodies in the way, but if the sound is not as good to start off with, then in my experience it only gets worse when you add bodies in the way!

One of the main benefits for me has been the crossover. Before I was just using the built in crossover on the subs, which is set at a fixed 100hz. The DBX allows me to tweak the crossover to any frequency I like, and also adjust the crossover curves and even bring up the volume of either the subs or the tops independently. I have found that 118hz is a much better sounding crossover point for my speakers, but it took me a while of fiddling around with it to come to this. Obviously, this is all dependant on the venue as well, I have one rather small venue that I play at quite regularly where 112hz sounds better (No idea why though!!).

The feedback destroyer is pretty much usless though. I just leave it on the live setting, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Quite often guests will want to give out awards or make announcements from somewhere other than behind the booth, so feedback is a problem for me. Luckily my MC6000 has a 3 band eq for the mics, so a bit of adjusting once they start speaking and a quick adjustment of the volume usually sorts out most of the problems.

About 3 months ago I bought myself a Driverack PX to use with my Wharfedale powered tops and subs. The first time I set it up and configured it all, I couldn’t really hear that much of a difference. I then went home and properly read the manual, did a load of research on eq’ing, comb filtering, standing waves etc. Since then I have been slowly tweaking it to what I think is a much better sound than it was before. It takes time to learn how to use it, but if I bypass it now the difference in the sound quality is night and day, and I will still keep tweaking it for specific venues and use cases.

I do use the auto EQ feature of it, but after I always tweak the GEQ to make it sound better. The auto EQ feature will get you halfway there, but it’s never going to be perfect.

TL DR: These sorts of things can be good, but you need to know what you’re doing with them to make them sound good.

If it’s anything like my MC6000, then you need to swap the outputs, so Master output is 3/4, and headphone output is 1/2. Maybe that will solve your problem.

I have used Serato CV02 vinyl with Virtual DJ before with no problems, and know of many other people that have done the same thing, so its not the vinyls.

Have you tried all of the steps in this guide? http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/TimeCode%20Config.html
I think that the problem might be that your gain is either too high or too low.

    traktor appeals to EDM-only Dj’s
VDJ is more of a ‘work tool’

VDJ has an automix playlist function – something invaluable to wedding DJ’s
VDJ has video dj-ing – something Traktor (let alone anyone else) can’t offer
VDJ also has the Key of the song displayed – something Traktor users don’t have, and would have to pay $20 to get mixed-in-key
    ^
to list just a few 🙂

Don’t get me wrong, Traktor has remix decks and tons of effects, but that stuff interests no one who plays outside of EDM clubs.

Not trying to be cocky here, But:
    1. Traktor also has an automix playlist function, its called Cruise mode, button is located next to the settings button.
    2. You can also display the key of the song in traktor if you analyse it with one of the FREE key analysing programs (I use Rapid Evolution 3, and theres another one out there called keyfinder which is meant to be good and free).

Virtual DJ has a lot more capability for midi scripting, you can do stuff in Virtual dj which just isn’t possible in traktor (if you have the patience)

Virtual dj also allows VST plugins for effects, which is something that neither traktor or serato offer.

And of course, you can have up to 99 decks in Virtual DJ, which you also cant do with traktor, serato or any other DJ software (as far as I know!)

I dont have a mixer. Im running directly from the controller to the powered speakers which have both XLR and TRS inputs.

I ran RCA -> XLR from my mixtrack pro to my powered speakers each side of my dj stand (probably about 5ft of cable) for ages and never had any problems. Just make sure you dont cross the cables over a power cable, if you do then you probably will get some interference.

Usually if the track is playing backwards then the RCA cables are connected in reverse (white into red, red into white) or the cables are wired the wrong way round on the turntable. Try switching them round and see what happens. There’s usually something in the settings as well to switch the left and right channel of the input around, maybe check to see if its been accidentally enabled?
