For me, nothing beats inviting a friend (or a few friends) over, cranking up the volume and getting stuck in to a case of beer.
Also watching a few videos from the DMC championships or some massive festival always gets me pumped.
SteeloParticipantI believe what you’re talking about it is setting a loop (works well with vocals) then reducing the size of the loop, on the fly. You can add effects such as filters or a flanger + cut in and out with the fader to make it more dramatic.
SteeloParticipantWhatever you choose, drop the “DJ” at the beginning. It’s not the 90’s anymore. Just my 2 cents.
SteeloParticipantBeat juggling is definitely possible but extremely difficult to pull off more advanced stuff. To be honest that was basic juggling done pretty sloppy considering the big dramatic intro…
SteeloParticipantEvery controller has a different purpose but its a lot of work to use them all at once. Lots of prep time for some of them too. I generally prefer hardware too but for effects the XY pad in TouchOSC is sick. Just like a Kaoss pad.
I’ve spent a lot of time worming on getting that kindle running the way i want. Doing lots of computer stuff thats way beyond me and I still haven’t quite got right yet. But there is a work around for getting custom layouts on it.I’ve been broke and eating noodles a lot of the time to get my fix on new toys. Think I’m done for a while after the F1.
SteeloParticipantThis article appears to be aimed at people who don’t have much experience mixing as most of this is overkill for the “minimum requirements” to mix 2 songs you don’t know. For a moment I’m gonna be “that guy” who mentions that we never had much if any of the track info at hand when mixing vinyl. It seems like we are all too reliant on being spoon fed track info. Whilst I would never disagree that being prepared is a good thing, you need to use your ears more and eyes less. Stop looking at your laptop. You got headphones, use them! You will be able to HEAR if the tunes have compatible BPMs and HEAR if the keys are clashing. Then you just gotta make sure you mix them in at the right time which isn’t rocket science considering the structure of music.
SteeloParticipantI own a midi fighter and its a pretty good controller, depending on how you map it. I currently have it mapped so chaining effects is super easy and fun. The buttons will take a beating too. The X1 sounds more suitable for your needs though. Its designed to do exactly what you’re after. The F1 looks like a great toy for samples and such.
SteeloParticipantBoth controllers seem pretty legit. I like the look of the reloop and I have to admit I’m a bit DJ Angelo fan too. I basically learnt to scratch off his tutorials. Its nice to see build quality and ruggedness being a thought in the design process now. Something that has been lacking with controllers for some time…that being
SteeloParticipantI believe HID is coming for Traktor with the 2.5 update at the end of the month. Both pieces of software are more than sufficient for standard mixing. Both pieces of software should be ok on your PC. Just make sure you do all the resource saving tweaks. Google that for more info. I would really recommend having a play with both pieces of software before making a purchase. I believe you can download free demo’s or each from their respective websites.
SteeloParticipantHow do I fix that spelling mistake? This will eat away at me!
SteeloParticipantAs far as I’m concerned Serato does DVS well (but I still rate Traktor Scratch better) and everything else mediocre (I can’t comment on their video though as I’ve never used it)…I do love the NS6 & NS7 though.
SteeloParticipantI don’t have a crazy amount but…
I run Traktor 2 with an S4 + 2 timecode turntables (for scratching and keeping my vinyl skills tight), a midi fighter, iphone running TouchOSC + a few other cool things, hacked Kindle Fire runnig TouchOSC and a Kontrol F1 on the way! I occassionally run ableton too so I’m looking forward to seeing how Traktor 2.5 goes so I can just use Ableton for production. I don’t really have any more room on my table and have to work out how to ship it all back home in a few months time.SteeloParticipantI’m partially deaf in 1 ear and I manage just fine. Use that cue/mix knob in your headphones helps a lot if its a noisy environment. Just be careful that you’re careful with the volume. You don’t need to start losing hearing in your good ear either.
SteeloParticipantI often start by using Beatport and a few other DJ MP3 sights to see whats hot at the moment. I often find trackitdown.net + djdownload.com are much better than Beatport for finding great tunes that won’t played by everyone and their dog. Then its blog time. I have a tonne of bookmarked blogs. I often find this will send you on a tangent somewhere which helps with discovering new artists.
SteeloParticipantThe only things I found slightly lacking on controllers was the jog wheels and the “rugged” build quality. Things have come a long way now though. Some controllers are built just as tough and have excellend jogwheels. I’m not sure whether the jogs are important to you or not though. I personally won’t completely abandon them as I still generally beatmatch manually most of the time and if I’m not then you never know when something could go wrong with a beatgrid and you have to ride it through the mix. That being said, I made the complete move to digital a while back and then recently got the urge to get back in to scratching so I added 2 vinyl turntables to the mix…guess I watched one too many Native Instruments promo videos!
