The only things I found slightly lacking on controllers was the jog wheels and the “rugged” build quality. Things have come a long way now though. Some controllers are built just as tough and have excellend jogwheels. I’m not sure whether the jogs are important to you or not though. I personally won’t completely abandon them as I still generally beatmatch manually most of the time and if I’m not then you never know when something could go wrong with a beatgrid and you have to ride it through the mix. That being said, I made the complete move to digital a while back and then recently got the urge to get back in to scratching so I added 2 vinyl turntables to the mix…guess I watched one too many Native Instruments promo videos!

Phil’s course. You’ll get taght the right technicques from the beginning and learn much faster than if you teach yourself and pick up bad habits.

You definetly can. I often run my midi fighter alongside my S4. I can’t remember exactly off the top of my head (don’t have my laptop with me) but you go to the controller editor in the settings and import 1 midi mapping (TSI), set all the routing and then theres an option somewhere to add another and you do the same again.

At the end of the day you’re working so don’t tolerate people telling you how to do your job. The odd request is ok but if they are irritating you then nicely ask them leave you alone. The only thing I would say is dont avoid mixing two songs simply because you can’t beatmatch them. One of the advantages of digital gear is how easy it is to get creative with effects and loops. Use some cool effects to switch up the tempo (if you feel it appropriate). The old faithful echo freeze is a simple trick that works well. Check out the following video by Ean Golden about this one:

Even if you don’t have Traktor you can do a similar trick with any Pioneer mixer that has effects. Alternatively you could learn how to scratch in transitions.

CD or better yet vinyl if its an album just for listening. I’m travelling and have been for some years so carrying CDs doesnt work for me now. Its all about whqat can fit on my macbook or my ipod.

After a few issues getting everything working, I think I will have it up and running tomorrow. I’ll post some pics or a video giving a little demo.

I wish the detection of the start of the song was much better in Traktor. My CDJs get it spot on probably 99% of the time, I don’t understand why software can’t.

VDJ 8 looks very promising. If you’re using a Ergo then I’m guessing you’re probably not requiring the additional features that Traktor offers. I think it will give the other “pro” software brands a bit of a run for their money. In terms of value you really can’t beat it. The video integration is something you can’t get with the other brands (non-existant in Traktor) without paying extra for it too. Until you really delve deep in to the world of custom midid mapping VDJ will probably serve you well.

Although its possible that the person had the levels running way too hot, its also possible that the device plugged in to the mixer had a much lower output so they had to crank it up.

Point Blank music school in London is about as legit as it gets. You should check out the website, but its not cheap…

The apps for it are a joke and Amazon have made a lot of restrictions with its functionality. With a bit of work you can make it a full functioning android tablet then go from there. I’m working on making TouchOSC work with it.

Hotel Manager…early morning meetings aren’t always too enjoyable after those late nights at the club. I’ve had a dig at lots of different jobs but haven’t quite settled on anything I really like yet. I’ve done retail, telecommunications, real estate, was a chef for a while, social media, sound & lighting, club and events promoter, worked the door at several clubs. I’ve always managed to play out fairly regularly for most jobs. I’m looking forward to taking some time off, heading back home and just locking myself in the studio for a while.

Nerves are probably the hardest thing to overcome at this point so preparation is the key. Obviously the ability to mix is a prerequisite of the job so I won’t say any more about that. Track selection is key. You want to be able to demonstrate what makes your sets unique and that you can keep people interested by picking appropriate music (which gets more people in the club which in turns sells more drinks – essentially the goal of most clubs). Play it safe and have some fun with it. Don’t get too carried away with pulling off tricks. I would mix as much as you can before the day and record your sets to analyse afterwards – but don’t be too critical as you are your harshest critic. Realistically person auditioning you won’t be half as aware of the music as you are.

To break it down, each piece of software has its own way for processing the audio signal. I think native Instruments have been spot on with this but apart from a few basic EQ tweaks (which may improve your sound a bit the Audio interface you use is really what determines the overall quality of the sound. There’s only a few high end interfaces that will beat NI’s but they are more expensive and not integrated so thats one more thing to carry with you to a gig.

Also, just having a job where you can keep the earbuds in all day while you work gives me 8 hours of new music discovery a day (via podcasts/soundcloud/itunes). I find its easier to discover new music while letting it stream in the background and having a tune strike/catch your attention instead of really focusing trying to FIND new songs i Like.

I like Vinny’s idea of letting music catch your attention as opposed to going searching for tunes. After hunting for a while I find it very tedious sifting through tracks and it all starts to sound the same.
