Learn How To DJ With Digital DJ Gear

NAMM 2013: Numark iDJ Live II Video Talkthrough

We grabbed a video talkthrough from Numark’s product guy Eric, looking “in the flesh” at the features of the new Numark iDJ Live II.

While unashamedly a budget product, this adds dual-action jogs (scratch and nudge) which are also illuminated – something unusual at this price point.

It’s also Midi class compliant and Core Midi compliant, meaning it will work out of the box with iPads and PCs.

There is a version available with a new and old (30 pin) iOS connector so it doesn’t matter what age your device is, you’ll be able to use it with software such as Algoriddim’s djay easily.

We think gear like this is great. It’s fun, and it’s a gateway into real DJ gear.

We think gear like this is great. It’s fun, and it’s a gateway into real DJ gear – and you can get great results from it, trust us. Also, things are moving so fast, that the idea that you can plug something like this into an iPad and DJ, anywhere, is still novel enough to be cool as far as we’re concerned. Hopefully if gear like this gets more and more people in to DJing, it’ll be good for all of us.

Do you like the look of this little starter Dj controller? Or would you rather stuff like this wasn’t on the market? Would you consider buying the Numark iDJ Live II as a first controller, or as a portable/second controller? Let us know your thoughts below.

Totally would rock for portable practice or the bedroom, I would never ever use it in a club though. Nice price too.

Wow! Bus powered off of the iPad? Impressive but I think they should made it smaller.

I’ve used the first version for 1 real gig and, honestly, it worked great. Being someone who is more of a studio producer than a DJ, I felt like just doing a DJ set that night, rather than playing out of Ableton (which I usually do). The people who are gonna hate on this are the same people who hated on Traktor, when it first came out. I’d rather see someone actually DJ off of an iPad than see someone play a pre-recorded set out of Ableton and pretend that they’re doing a bunch of stuff, which I’ve definitely seen done by some pretty big touring artists. But when it really comes down to it, the general crowd just wants to dance, there’s not a whole lot of difference between playing out of Serato or Traktor to playing out of the DJay app, IMO.
