Ableton has announced the release of Ableton Live 12, the latest version of its popular music production software. The update offers producers new tools for creativity, and workflow improvements. A few (of many) items that stand out for us are:

  • Keys and Scales, which allow users to transform or generate ideas within the confines of the selected scale, or sync the scale of Midi devices to the clip being played, for better sounding melodies etc
  • Meld, a new 12-voice synthesiser that uses FM, subtractive, and granular synthesis, for exciting new sounds
  • New packs for performing on the fly, exploring unlikely instruments, and creating authentic hip-hop and trap beats, making jamming and experimenting more fun
  • Improved Browser section, where they added a second column that acts as a “tag cloud” as well as quick access to presets for plugins, making it easier to find what you’re looking for
  • The ability to view the Clip Editor or automation plus an Instrument or Effect at the same time, plus a better mixer in Arrangement View, providing more information and control without moving to Session View – both of which should make the workflow faster

Should I upgrade?

All new features should be seen as additional to the workflow in Ableton Live 11, meaning there’s no reason not to upgrade as an existing user to have access to all of these, and many more improvements and additions.
