Many people associate clubbing with drinking… but is it OK for DJs to drink while on the job?

Forum member Tyler Bond writes: “Just wondered how many of you guys have a beer while doing a set? Is it frowned upon or is it something club DJs do as part of the night? I’m not a massive drinker myself but do like a bottle or two on a Saturday night especially when the tunes are banging…”

Digital DJ Tips says:

Good timing for your question, after the excesses of Christmas, Tyler, especially with many DJs attempting “dry Januaries”. One of my good friends Dave Haslam, a great DJ, said to me one: “You can go the drink/drugs route in this career, or keep clean. Those who keep clean do best.”

But even he was known to have just a bottle or two, “so I forget the people I’m playing to are half my age!” he told me once.

But rather than go on about it myself (personally, I drink sometimes, not other times, in life and in DJing – but several of the DDJT team don’t drink at all), I though this would be a nice one to throw over to the audience.

So, do you drink while you’re DJing? Is it something that’s OK for DJs, or is it unprofessional? And does it depend on what type of DJing you do? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
