When Pioneer DJ launched its beginner-focused DDJ-200 controller, the company sent one of its product developers to our studios with the unit for a day, to talk us through its features. Towards the end of the day, the product dev whipped out a pair of headphones, and said, “these are the new headphones we’re going to be pushing with the DDJ-200.”

I actually thought he was joking – because the headphones cost the same as the controller! It was clear that there was a gap in Pioneer DJ’s product range, for headphones in the right price range for users of its more entry-level gear.

The company has now filled that gap with its latest headphones, the HDJ-CUE1, which come in at just $69/€69/£59 per pair (here’s our review).

They look the part, and contain the same 40mm drivers as the next model up in the range, the Pioneer DJ HDJ-X5. They are a closed-back, over-ear, foldable design. They have a padded headband and swivel cups, for comfortable use over one ear, both ears, or around the neck. They come with a coiled cable, that extends to 1.8 metres.

They can be jazzed up with the purchase of a $30 HC-CP08 accessory pack, which contains a replacement pair of polyurethane leather earpads and a replacement cable, in a choice of bright orange, pink, yellow, blue or green.

Pioneer DJ has also launched a Bluetooth model, the $99/€99/£89 HDJ-CUE1BT, which is available in black, white or red, and which can be used either wired or wireless.
