Pioneer DJ just announced RB-DMX1, a hardware interface that syncs music you’re playing in Rekordbox DJ with DMX lighting. The RB-DMX1 connects to your laptop running Rekordbox DJ, and your lighting fixtures connect to the RB-DMX1. You can then code and “script” lighting commands for songs from within Rekordbox DJ using the forthcoming Lighting Mode feature. If you prefer not to spend time coding, an automatic scripting function is also available that creates lighting commands at the touch of a button. The result is a custom light show that plays consistently whenever you drop those tunes.

We’ve seen this before: SoundSwitch was first to market an automated lighting product over a year ago. It was compatible with Serato DJ and, recently, Virtual DJ 8. It’s a novel and convenient idea, especially for mobile and bar DJs who take their own lights to their shows, but it has yet to pick up steam. With Pioneer DJ releasing its own automated lighting hardware / software solution, automated lighting gets another boost, though it remains to be seen if this technology will replace a dedicated lights man.
