With the release of Rekordbox 7.0.7, Pioneer DJ/AlphaTheta has brought a much-needed new lighting feature to their DJ software. In this article and video I’ll explain what’s changed and how you can use it if you want to control your lights using Rekordbox software.

Rekordbox, uniquely in its class, includes a feature that allows DJs to control their DMX DJ lights directly from the software. While it may not be as comprehensive as dedicated hardware or software solutions, it’s perfect for mobile DJs or those with a few lights. It offers a convenient way to manage lighting directly within your DJ set-up, even letting you map the controls to unused buttons on your gear.

The DMX interface dilemma

So if you happen to own a DDJ-FLX10, you’re all set – the controller includes a DMX output interface to connect and control your lighting set-up. Simply plug your first light into the socket on the back of your unit, and daisy chain the others as you would normally. However, if you’re using other gear without this socket, you previously needed the Pioneer DJ RB-DMX1 box – which the company has helpfully discontinued!

With Rekordbox 7.0.7 though, the company has opened compatibility with third-party DMX interfaces, solving the access problem for many DJs. Specifically, the update supports the Enttec Open DMX, Enttec DMX USB Pro, and Enttec DMX USB Pro Mk2 interfaces. Grab yourself one of these boxes, connect it to your laptop, and plug in your lights. You’ll now have full lighting control through Rekordbox.

A few considerations to note: To use this lighting feature, you need either the Creative or Pro subscription plan of Rekordbox. And if you’re on a Mac, a special driver installation is required to enable this functionality. Detailed instructions and additional information are available on this webpage.
