Pioneer DJ just announced the XDJ-RR, a two-channel all-in-one standalone system that can play music from thumb drives prepared via Rekordbox. It’s got a seven-inch display along with twin USB sockets on the face of the unit with one able to record your mixes. It has two jogwheels, four performance pads per deck, a Beat FX section with three effects onboard, four Sound Color FX, and aux and mic inputs. It also works with Rekordbox DJ running on a laptop and the unit ships with a licence for it.

Who’s it for?

The XDJ-RR looks to be an enticing option for intermediate club DJs on a budget who are looking for something they can use at home. However, the DJ who would benefit the most from this would be the serious beginner DJ who has decided that he or she wants to explore and dwell in Pioneer DJ’s ecosystem. The ability to learn how to spin with just USB thumb drives will be a priority for DJs who have professional club and touring aspirations, and having a layout similar to a club standard CDJ/DJM means the eventual transition from bedroom to the club will be smoother.

Compatibility with Rekordbox DJ running on a laptop also means that DJs get the best of both “standalone” and “DJ controller + laptop” worlds, allowing him or her to explore the plethora of creative performance features and options afforded by Rekordbox DJ. It looks to be a great home system for all types of DJs at a price that’s cheaper than the XDJ-RX2. Watch out for our review of it soon.
