    DJ Mastiff,

I would advise not trying to make the perfect mix set, (not yet anyway). In my humble opinion, firstly make sure you work on the essential skill set you will need to one day make that perfect mix set. I know it seems that manual beat matching (beat matching by ear, not by sync button), music theory, and all that other boring stuff is obsolete in the age of the controller but trust me when I tell you, it will make a HUGH difference as you progress on “the journey”.
I liken it to building a house, if you don’t have a strong foundation eventually there will be problems which you will have to go back and fix later.
Secondly, learn to count if you have not already. I know, I know, we all know how to count to 4. But do you do it every time you play or listen to music? If not you should be, make it second nature.
Thirdly, make it your mission to “know your music”. Not just the title and artist, but what the breakdown of the song itself, its structure, how many bars is the intro, how many bars until your kick comes in, where is the build up, break down, where does the outro start and when should you begin your blend, what type of transition should you use to get to the next song.
Lastly, and most importantly. Record yourself when you play. This will help you to identify your mistakes and eventually get you to the point where you can make that perfect mix set.
Hope that helps, best of luck on your journey…

    DJ Marcel,
I feel your pain…one of the things I did to minimize freezing and drop out was to be sure my macbook pro was optimized for digital DJ’ing. There are a number of great ideas mentioned in one of my earlier posts named “Serato Crash and Burn” dated September 20, 2016. Additionally, make sure your macbook is “fast enough” for the software your running, I am running 8GB/500GB and have very few issues. Even though the machine is new, you should still optimize, there are probably several programs running that you aren’t aware of and close down. I would also look at all of my cables. Not all USB’s are created equally. Lastly, make sure your computers sleep setting is for never (this is a part of the optimization).

    Best of luck,

    DJ Vintage,

Thanks for the advise. I have taken (and continue to refer back to on a regular basis), the power mixing skills course. Believe me I know it is not easy task to change not just BPM but genre! I am not taking this lightly. To play house for 3 or 4 hours will be much less complicated than this task for sure! Also just reading the crowd is going to be a challenge, what does a 75 year old dance to! LOL!
In any event, I am planning on taking the wedding DJ course before the spring (it’s a time issue).

    Thanks again for the advise,

    Joe,
I think I understand what it is you’re trying to do as I have run across the same issue. I play a lot of “older” music in my sets and have been plagued by changing tempo during a longer blend. To my knowledge, your only real option is to manually beat grid the songs you are trying to use. There is a really good tutorial on YouTube by a DJ named Ron A. He suggests using a “master track” as a kind of metronome to beat grid to. I found it to be very helpful in trying to beat grid tracks. Most important to remember though is that although the software programs are good at beat grid-ding, they will often mistakenly place the the first beat marker at the beginning of a song instead of on the first down beat. With a little practice it’s not hard to manually beat grid, it just takes time…hope that helps.

    Jacob,

I think (for what it’s worth), begin by trying to understand “why” you want to become a DJ and what type of DJ you want to be. Music is broad based..there are so many nucs and crannies! Is it the allure of playing the “Big Gig” in the “Big Room”, the adoration of the crowd, the money perhaps, the “cool factor”?
This is were I began and it has served me well. For me, it is bringing what it is that I love to listen to and believe in (most important), to my audience. Playing that track that most have never heard and vibin’ on their reaction to it. Playing a song from the days before “disco” was even a word and what there was was R&B and having someone ask me about the music I play, how do they get “my sound”. Of course it’s not my sound, it’s the sound of what I grew up on. It’s my interpretation of someone else’s sound.
I would say explore whether this is a passing fancy or a deep rooted passion (hopefully it’s the later!). If it is a passion, regardless of the motivation, then “Chive on bro”.

OBTW…for you old house heads out there, going to see Mark Farina in New Orleans on December 1oth. My buddy is doing his warm up set…I’m Amped!

    Hope that helps Jacob,

Are you talking about kbs or Hz? If you are indeed talking about kbs, 320 is the best quality that you can download in MP3’s. Unfortunately with MP3’s you are not able to increase the kbs of a download. Quality of the track can’t be changed once it is downloaded. The quality is determined by the person who submits for download. For quality downloads, I would suggest a DJ pool such as MMP3, beatport, traksource, and many others. You can never be assured of the music quality of stuff you rip offline or get from your friends collections.

    Hope that helps,

    King of Snake,

As always great advise from the “DDJT Crew” that is truly appreciated. Do yo have any advise on quality USB cables that can be used with the Pioneer DDJ SX2 and with external hard drives?

    Wow,
Lots of great information! Thanks to Terry, Jennifer, Vintage and Peter. I have a lot to try to sort out with regards to my computer situation. I was advised also to maybe think of changing to a Macbook Pro (But more than a grand for a computer, I don’t think so). Anyway, I will try (with the help of some people who know a lot more about this computer thing than I do) to make these changes and let you all know how it turns out. Lastly, thanks for not busting me out for spelling “Seratto” wrong in the title…LOL!

As always, thanks for all the advice,

    Jennifer, Terry 42,

Thank you both for your responses. I am taking both of them into consideration to try to solve this issue. Jennifer, could you explain please…what is a SSD? Is it some change I make on the computer and how do I make a boot in windows? Is this like a reboot of the system? Sorry, I’m not the most computer savvy person.

    Thanks again,

Awesome advice as always, thanks for the feed back. I will definitely do the research before getting too deep into the lighting situation before going any further.

    Iain,

I would encourage doing your tagging in the software that you are going to use. Not all of the information may save or transfer in the software the way you would like it to. This may also give you some practice at navigating around the software, and picking up some learning points (tricks) as you go along. Just my opinion.

    Hope this helps,

    DJ Vintage,

Thanks for letting me know Presonus is a live sound mixer brand! I guess you pretty much eliminated Presonus! I’m going to look at some other DAW’s to see what fits the direction I’m trying to go in. I’d like to use it for editing, mastering mixtapes and eventually production in the future.

    Thanks for the response,

    Aldobymusic,

I have not used any DAW’s yet, I downloaded audacity but still haven’t had the time to really get into it. I would like to use the DAW for editing, mastering mixtapes and trying some production in the future, so I guess I’m looking for something that can grow with e into the future.
