Although I use the x-fader on occassion (it does free one hand and the curve is pretty well definable on my X1600), my tip would be to make sure that you have the main output level meter up when starting your mix. I am a sound guy too and “0 dB rules!”. So while preparing my mix, I make sure that the signal levels of outgoing and incoming channel are roughly the same (0 dB with max 3-6 dB peaks) on the channel input level meters. Then I check what level my main is outputting at, say -15 dB average. Then when I start the mix and messing with EQ and bringing in the new track, I keep an eye on my master output level to keep it around -15 dB. That way i can correct when necessary (for example lowering the volume of the outgoing track when I bring the bass of the incoming track back up). This way the total level of sound coming out of the main speakers will remain more or less the same.

Obviously there is no substitute for being able to use your ears to do this, but the master output level will give you an immediate heads up when you are not sure and/or need confirmation of what your ears are telling you.

Little correction here. Gold plated connectors are only helpful if the jack is gold plated also, which is hardly ever the case on mp3 players and smartphones. Cables DO matter, but only in environments where the total quality of the sound system is good enough. I am talking recording studio or audiophile levels here. And even then we are talking mic cables and such, not cords for headphones.

As far as interchangeability goes. Pretty much tip and first rings are used for l and r signal, a 2nd ring for mic signal. This means that a stereo headset plug should work even if plugged into a phone, even if the headset has no mic. How it works with stuff like volume control and such is dependant on the manufacturers implementation.

I am guessing that getting an original replacement part is gonna work best.

Not unless they registered their DJ name as a trademark, which most won’t have done. I think it would be a mistake to try going by Tiesto, Afrojack or Armin van Buuren thouhg 🙂

Obviously I am talking about a LONG time ago, but during my residency years in 5-start hotels, we would open at 21:00, but I would hardly ever start playing before 23:00 on the busy nights. I’d be walking around the place, bonding with the regulars, introducing people to each other and stuff like that. The club management loved it, because it created a strong “we” feeling amongst the crowd. During these first two hours people would just sit or stand around catching up with their friends on the previous week an while doing that, drink! (not unimportant in any place with a wet bar).

Once the night got underway (23:00 onwards) I would not involve myself with stuff like drunk customers, crying women, etx. Then I would remain the DJ behind the turntables (told ya it was long ago :-)) and only deal with requests of people coming up to me. I would not leave my post for anything except a quick toiletbreak.

At mobile events, especially weddings, I will limit myself to interacting with the person handling the programming/logistics to make sure the right things happens at the right time. I will shake hands/congratulate the happy couple and that would very much be it.

In effect, agreeing with Terry, it depends and you will have go with your own judgement. I would/will spend time and effort if it helps my name, that of the venue or organiser/promoter and/or increases (repeat) business to the place. I would/will not play cupid, bouncer or host (at least not once I got started playing seriously).

Wish you luck with figuring this one out as your career progresses.

For the rare occasions that I fool around with a keyboard (really bought it for my sound engineering/producer course two years back) I have an EMU XBoard 25 (there were bigger versions too I believe). Main attraction for me were the 16 knobs, meaning less midi pages to go through if you want to get something done.

Only 25 but full-size keys. 16 saveable patches (settings). Both Midi Out (DIN) and Midi over USB. Oh and pitch and modulation wheels of course and finally a battery option, so you can run it off of (4 I think) AA batteries.

And I got it dirt cheap as it was the last showroom model. It was under 50 euro 🙂

Probably not what you are looking for, although if you need bigger the 69 key version might be worth a look up on ebay or in stores.

@ atom12v: HA! Got you beat by 3 years (start at age 14 which was 35 years ago last year).

And nerves vary from gig to gig.

Good to see another “old timer” here though.

@ ricardo: I was in neighboring Oklahoma may last year and have been to Dallas twice before. Never managed to go out and discover a scene if any 🙂

    Perhaps next time.

Hummm, you have me confused. If you have two ears (which I am assuming :-)), wouldn’t your right ear be free to listen to the monitors? Unless of course you have the volume of your headphones WAY up.

I hear you on the split cue on headphone, it took me some time to get used to it.

Of course ? Why of course ? You sure you don’t mean “and, of course, despite it being Pioneer!!”?

mmm … is it that just the shorties want to reply to this one … or can we start drawing the conclusion that DDJT DJs are predominantly short? 🙂

At 6’3″ I don’t really qualify as short I think. Still I can relate to the problem. Doing a lot of mobile DJ-ing, you usually stand on the same level as the crowd. So the first few rows can see you and, more importantly, you can see. Beyond that, not even my height helps and I often have no clue what is happening a few feet from the DJ stand.

I have seriously been looking into the folding platform that RoadReady sells. Price is still a bit steep, but it would give me a nice 40cm-50cm rise. And it collapses into a nice compact, transportable flightcase. Seemingly it sets up and packs up rather quickly (which is really imporant since I don’t want to add much more time to a gig for setting up/breaking down).

Nice black velcro attached skirt around the edge and it looks nifty too. Top in several colors and materials I think.

    Just my two cents worth.

Uhm … speakers for the main sound … cue from ONE half of your cans? And if the speakers are too far away and/or pointing away from you (so you can’t clearly hear the main output and/or there is a delay), you could set up a monitor speaker (especially handy if the controller/mixer has booth output).

Alternatively, if your controller/mixer supports split cue you can have main on one earpiece and the cue on the other. Once you got it set, do your mix and either listen through the mains (with cue still on one ear for last minute nudging) or set split cue to master and keep your cans on.

Personally I have a monitor speaker which gives me the correct main signal and use only one earpiece for the cue signal. As soon as I start the mix, the monitor speaker will reflect what is happening (i.e. what the audience hears).
