I liked it. I’m no producer ( at all! ) so there is not much I can I say about that. But I think it is good track. Nice beats, nice melody.

Although I think it’s very clean. I mean the melody and beats. Maybe also try to make some tracks that have some kind of edge to it.  A little rawer. Some distortion or something.

But keep up the good work

Maybe you can upload an example? to soundcloud maybe or an other site. This way it’s hard to get an idea of the problem.

When you mix the 2 tracks do you have the bass open of both tracks? That might be the problem. When you start to mix track B in track A cut the bass of the incoming track. At the right moment switch the basses. But maybe you are already doing this.

There is always the possibility that some tracks don’t work well together.  But I assume you tried this with lots of different combination of tunes.  There is no way all the tunes in your collection don’t go together.

And how about if you hit sync ( if you have sync button that is ) How does that sound?

in reply to: My first mix – what are your thoughts? #1015302

This mix is not just good. It’s exceptional in my opinion. And to think you are doing this for only a month. The mix is good. The transitions are good. I also think you have a good musical ear. By which I mean that you pick the tunes that go well with each other. This makes the makes the mix flowing but never boring. So the mix is more then ok.

For promotion purposes I suggest you also make a shorter mix. Like 30 minutes or so. This way it’s easier for a promoter to listen to it as they usually are busy and probably will receive a lot of mixes. You also added a track list which is also a good idea.  This will also heighten the change someone will listen to it. Because if you see a artist or tracks you like it will make you curious.

To get gigs. Well just get yourself out there. Visit the places you like to DJ in. And ask. You say you know people who DJ. Ask them to listen to your mixes.  Maybe they let you open a night for them. Maybe they let you have go during soundchecks or things like that. Be persistent and don’t give up. It might take a while. Maybe not, but don’t give up. I think you got the talent. And if you have the passion for music then that is a golden combination.

Good luck, and have a super fun time while DJ’ ing

    Ha Ha,

I remember that one.  My stepbrother had those. He did ( well still does ) something with light and sound. I borrowed 2 of does from him to learn how to mix with cd’s.

I could’t stop playing with those jog FX. I thought that was so much fun. You didn’t had that on vinyl and my  Gemini 626 mixer.

in reply to: Help I have never used cdjs #1015194

This might also help. At least if the club has cdj 2000 Nexus players.

The first link are the official training video’s from Pioneer. The second link is a detailed walk through of the 2000 Nexus player

    http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL37CC9EAA4480B5C9

But I also think you should ask if you could use your own controller. You can connect it to one of the up fader inputs on the club it’s mixer. If that’s not possible then go read the manual and watch some tutorials. And don’t be afraid to ask for some help from an other DJ or the sound guy. There is no shame in that. Also the 2000 nexus has a sync feature. That might come in handy if your in trouble. ( this will only work if you have analysed your tracks in rekordbox )

But be confident in your own skill. You did get that gig.  And that is for a reason. Because they like you as a DJ.  Good Luck, you can do it!

Please let me know how it all went down.

About that cutting the bass of a the incoming track. I think that is something you really should practice. Al least in my opinion that is. When mixing at home it is not really a problem but when mixing in a club or party you probably will be mixing over a PA system. So the volume will be a lot louder. And in that case 2 kicks on full volume will start to clash. And you will push the main output to high.  And as you noticed in silvercues mix. The transitions will sound a lot smoother. Switching basslines with your mixer will also gives a real nice effect. When you do that right you have the kick and bassline of the incoming track with still maybe some melody and samples of the outgoing track.

I listened to your second mix. And I must say It’s better than the first one. The transitions are not perfect but you your still learning. What you could do is use the sync to set BPMs at the same speed. And then use your ears to beatmatch them. When you think that they are in sync look at phrase meter if your correct.  If not look away from the screen again and try again till they are in sync. This is great way to learn the feel of beatmatching without also having to use the pitch faders. This way you learn to beatmatch one step at the time When you mastered this take it a step further and beatmatch only by ear. It’s just an idea.  Do whatever your comfortable with

I really like the tracks you used at the second mix. Great tunes.

    Listened it

    Liked it.

I thought it was mixed really well.  To me it’s always impressive how people manage to put so many tracks in that short of a period.  Good mix

in reply to: "Mix Outside the Box #9"- Tech House with Video #1015120

Really nice mix. Mixing and track selection both very good.
I was quite impressed with your mixing skills. Even a scratch. That does sound good. Maybe I should try that to 😀

Maybe try to find a better spot for your cam. The lighting is to dark. Which is a too bad because you can’t really see what you are doing which ruins the point of having a cam in the first place.

    But keep it up!

in reply to: How to make a great set (progressive house) #1015085

In addition to what D Jam said. Use the waveforms. I use Traktor and even though the waveforms are not above each other as in Serato. It can really help you the get better insight in the structure of a track. I use the white lines in Traktors waveforms as a guide. So I know when to mix in a track. So for example track A ends when the first breakdown in track B starts.  When making mixtapes this can really be a good way to keep the energy levels flowing.  So even if you have a track with a really long intro. As some tech house and techno tracks have. You still have a reference where to mix in.

in reply to: Uploading To Soundcloud? #1014914

Do you have the LE version of Traktor or the full version. In Traktor LE you can’t use the hotcues. And what controller do you use?
In Traktor LE you can not use all the FX. So that could be the problem of the FX buttons not working.

Uploading to Soundcloud is real simple. Just click on the upload button on top of the screen. It`s right next to your profile picture. Then you can select a file from your computer. You can also ad a picture for your mix if you want.

I think as a DJ you should play the music you have a passion for. The music you like so much that you cant stop listening to it. The music that you want to share, that you need to share. Just because you want other people to hear how great that music is. And because it makes you happy when other people like the music you play, dance to the music you play. If in your case that is Hip Hop then just go ahead and play Hip Hop. Dont worry to much about skills or technique. Because if you like that music that will give you the drive and motivation to practice. And practice makes skill.
I think that is better then maybe to say, I think hip hop is to difficult for me so I think I am going to play EDM for example. Dont underestimate yourself. You will get better over time. And maybe you even want to learn scratching and turntabelism after a while. Take it one step at the time. And also there alot of hiphop DJ`s using Serato.

in reply to: How to make a great set (progressive house) #1014822

    Yes that does make sense.
But I really think you should pick your own tunes. Listen to alot of music. If I would suggest tunes to you then its not really your set.
This is also part of creating your own style.

in reply to: How to make a great set (progressive house) #1014805

Terry has a good point. You need to find your own style and way of mixing. There is not really a right or wrong way to do it.
I think start with with mixing the intros and the outros of 2 songs. Progressive tracks seem to have a similar pattern.

    http://www.beatport.com/track/animals-original-mix/4459187

If you look at the waveform of animals ( I think you know that one 😀 ) It starts with a snare then the kick comes in till the first breakdown.
What I usually do. Is mix in this intro. till it hits the first breakdown. And there I cut away the outgoing track.
This is a basic but effective way of mixing in my opinion. When you want to experiment with mixing in key you could also mix melodies.
Just mix alot. And try out different things. This is the best way of learning.
Don`t worry about it to much. try to have. No have fun, and happy mixing
