Phil did a video on harmonic / key mixing. It is on YouTube. You should definitly watch that. It probably awnser some of your questions.
There is also something called the camelot wheel. It shows you what keys sound good together. You could use that as a guide when making mash ups. Programs like traktor can also calculate the key of a track for you. Because not all tracks sound good or harmonic together. But it is like Vintage said. If you change the tempo of a track you will also change the key.
But there is alot to be found on DD tips on key and harmonic mixing. That would probably help you alot. But also learn to trust your ears. If 2 tracks keys are a match but it sounds terrible. Than it probably is terrible.
mauritsrotte@gmail.comParticipantThanx,
See you guys!
mauritsrotte@gmail.comParticipantThere is a mix online. It dates from 2010. But it sounds timeless ha ha ๐
mauritsrotte@gmail.comParticipantI love that synth sound at 2:17. that’s the type of the thing that makes the dancefloor go crazy
mauritsrotte@gmail.comParticipantIgnore it. If it is really inappropriate then report it. Do not comment back on it. be the bigger man in this. I think that most people who post that kind of stuff just do it for shock values. To get a angry reaction out of it. So best just to let it pass.
I also think to bigger you get as DJ ( or any artist ) the more this will happen. Try post a mix on youtube with the sync button and watch the reactions. Those things happens, sadly
mauritsrotte@gmail.comParticipantAwesome track!
mauritsrotte@gmail.comParticipantZidane is his last name. So it’s just a last name. It is not a nickname that he is known for. But I don’t think it’s your last name, am I right? If that is the case you can’t say; Hey I am just using my own name, that happens to be the same as the last name Zinรฉdine zidane ‘s last name.
I don’t think it is going to be a problem unless you are starting to get really famous / known as DJ. But if that is the case then I think you wouldn’t want to change your name. because under that name you build your fan base and reputation.
So I don’t think it is going to be a problem but maybe it is better to come up with a new name. Just in casemauritsrotte@gmail.comParticipantI have the same problem. Although I started dj’ingt again a year and a half ago and had some gigs, this is an issue for me too. I get very little plays on soundcloud, and sometimes zero plays on mixcloud for weeks.
This site did some articles on this. here is a 3 piece series. You cand find part 1 here http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2013/11/get-dj-podcast-soundcloud-youtube-itunes-part-1/I think the general advice is to build a brand for yourself. Be active on social media. Maybe start a facebook page and a twitter account for yourself as DJ. If people respond to your mixes on soundcloud and youtube. respond back to them. In general it is a good idea to follow people back who follow you. Spend some time on it. Try to upload mixes regularly. So people know what to expect and when to expect. This is something I struggle with. You know, to upload regularly. But I do think that is important. But I am somewhat chaotic when it comes to planning things ๐ also making mixes.
And yeah, you just started out. So people don’t know you …. yet. And remember there are so many DJ’s out there. And we all want to get ourselves heard. It is a tough competition.
mauritsrotte@gmail.comParticipantFeels great doesn’t it? to have your first official mix. You are a recording DJ now!
You made a good mix. I was cleaning my living room while listening your mix so I did not really listened to all the details. But I did not hear things which I think need improvement. I think you’re on the right track here.
Keep it up!mauritsrotte@gmail.comParticipantAwesome track. Great bassline.
The track has a mysterious feel to it, which I think is great.
I’m curious of your future productionsmauritsrotte@gmail.comParticipanthey Telfer
I really liked your mix. Nice and uplifting. Your mixing keeps the energy level flowing. It just keeps on going. I liked that.
Your song selection is also really good in my opinion. I’ve some nice melodies
Keep it up!mauritsrotte@gmail.comParticipantMake sure you like the clubs facebook page. Subscribe to their newsletter if they got one. Follow them on twitter. Be active on their facebook page. Like pictures from the parties and evenings they had.
This way you look involved with club. Because if the manager looks you up on facebook ( and he is probably gonna ), and sees you didn’t even like his club facebook. That way it looks if you are not interested in his club. But only interested for yourself to get a gig. Maybe try to visit the club once. I know it is a long way to travel but I think it would really help you to get a gig.I hope it makes sense. I had some trouble with translating my thoughts in English today. Bottom line is to be active on the social media of the clubs you wish to play at.
mauritsrotte@gmail.comParticipantI just listened to your mix. And here comes the feedback ๐
A few times the melodies clash in a way that is really noticeable. I don’t think it is bad thing if that happens sometimes, but maybe try some harmonic mixing. Keep working on your beatmatching. you’re mixing is sometimes to much off beat. Look that happens, but in a promo mix you should try to avoid it. You can also do a second take, or a third one, or a fourth one. I know because I ‘ve been there myself ๐The length of the mix is good. 30 minutes is perfect length for a promo mix. The mix is good as a promo. By witch I mean that it feels as showcase. It paints a picture of who you are as DJ. The build up is good. A nice variation of melodic and harder tracks. You also did a good job of putting 12 tracks in 27 minutes.
All and all a good mix with some room for improvement.
February 18, 2014 at 5:56 pm in reply to: I cannot stand Serato DJ, but I need to record a mix? #2004932mauritsrotte@gmail.comParticipantYou also can use Audacity to record mixes. It’s a free program.
mauritsrotte@gmail.comParticipantI also noticed something like that. But that were tracks that were re released on a compilation album. So a certain label releases a best of 2013 album and the tracks on that compilation cost E 1.56. But the price on the original EP is 1.30.
To answer your question. People who don’t know that that tracks is re released. There the one’s who are going to spend more. It is a little sneaky but those things happen in sales. Or you should be willing to check each track you buy -
