Mostly money… I spent a while looking up second hand cdj’s and mixers, etc. and decided I couldn’t afford it. So I looked into DJ software, downloaded the home version of VDJ and had a blast with it. Moved forward from there. I’m not completely sold on digital to be honest. If I had the money I’d probably still get a mixer and some cdjs. A midi feels unstasifying to me for some reason.
mr_johnMemberhmm seems a bit like a love-child of facebook and twitter. With a few extras thrown in. It’s certainly more personal than facebook. Not sure how well it would work for promotion. It seems to me like it’s difficult to find people. No browse or networks or anything.
mr_johnMemberguess I should get in on this… halbert986@hotmail.com
mr_johnMemberlivin the dream!!
mr_johnMemberwhat exactly do you mean? Personally no i don’t… But there’s youtube videos… Particularly the ellaskins channel, which I highly recommend. And my personal favorite, a sort of POV video of Laidback Luke doing a mix. I find both of those helpful.

Luke- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBs9Qa3rPv0mr_johnMemberfrankly I don’t think it’s that common… I’ve only ever seen 2 girl dj’s in my time. 1 local and one by the name of dj baby ann. (Didn’t much care for her) They just don’t seem all that common for whatever reason… Which I think is kinda weird. But yeah, I would say it’s more exciting than anything else. Perhaps I’m ignorant, but I can’t think of a “Household name” who’s a girl as far as EDM goes… So it’s probably just more surprising to people.
mr_johnMemberi do this too much actually… I kinda miss just listening to the music and have to stop myself, it’s becoming like work. I use key word comments in itunes to filter them into different smart playlists and go from there. I actually had no idea ableton had anything like that haha 😳 learn something knew everday I guess.
mr_johnMemberi feel ya on all of this. I recently went to see afrojack, and I recognized 99% of his songs. Course he mixed them in very different ways so it kept me guessing. There was never just one song playing. It would be a sampled beat from one song, a chorus from another, and so on. Obviously he’s on a different level, but why shouldn’t the same idea apply? EDM is so versatile, I feel like a dj who just plays it track to track is kinda lame.
mr_johnMemberI’m partial to ableton. Reason is nice. The learning curve is pretty ridiculous though.
Whatever you end up choosing, I recommend checking out “The dance music manual” by Rick Snoman. Really informative stuff there.mr_johnMemberDJ GRE, post: 3023 wrote: If you’re talking about the picture/videos I think that you are… those are all synths loads and loads of glorious moogs etc. I would love to just go nuts in there! 😉 He customizes them to create analogue sounds from the ground up instead of using the default sounds programmed in them or programmed in software.
well i know he’s got tons of keyboards n whatnot.. But I’m pretty sure he’s got some grand pianos layin around as well.
mr_johnMemberu sure about that can’t play a keyboard part? I mean IDK either, but he’s got all these pianos in his house n stuff I would assume he knows….
mr_johnMembernope. All I learned about it was from getting my haircut last week. But i still find the verdict ridiculous.
mr_johnMemberWell when it comes to production, I don’t see why people say you’re not a musician. Press a key on a piano it makes a sound, press a key on a midi it makes a sound, what’s the difference? You’re composing an entire song in production that’s more a musician than playing the guitar to me. With DJ’s I can see the argument, people say it’s not “your music.” But you’re still manipulating the music as you see fit.
mr_johnMemberi’d keep the majority top 40 and maybe throw in a popular trance song every now and again depending on how the crowd reacted. Love is not enough strikes me as a bit too chill and melodic to keep a top 40 crowd interested
mr_johnMemberheh? garageband, really? The only method I found on that was cutting the tracks L or R channel. Apparently with some tracks, the vocals are recorded on the left and instruments on the right. Didn’t work for me though. There’s always phasing but that’s assuming you have the instrumental already, and even then…
I cut my samples out in ableton it’s kinda tedious work though. -
