i hate 6 hrs sets. you have to play all types of genres and its tiresome. Also have to know how to mix different genres together. i have friends as djs and always employ them as an opener or a mid relief. know your music, know what songs are like 7 mins or have a breaker in your set to allow you to take that smoke or bathroom break. and i hope you are well compensated for your time because you will be beat at the end.

“I’m an American DJ who plays a top 40 night weekly at the same bar. I do a lot of intro / outro mixing, and when I mess up and start the track too late, I get left with a gap of space where there are no lyrics. That gap is awkward. I was taught by my mentor (who had to save my butt a few times with his mic skills) that I use that intro / outro time to get on the mic and hype up my crowd. I’m not the best at it, but I’m also not on stage in front of 30k people. I do birthday shoutouts and tell people I take requests.” dj mark more

yup, he is right. i do allot of work in bars and small clubs so yes the usual birthday shout out and the ever important “last call” is necessary. also if you have to make an announcement or something find the intro outro or just loop 8 bars so you can say what you have to. talking during a verse is the same as mixing in the middle of one; a major no no. and you also might run across the “has anybody found my keys or hey this car left their lights on in the parking lot” request. as far as being comfortable enough to do this, well, you just have to go ahead and just do it. do it with the same fortitude it took you to get out of your bedroom and play in front of a crowd. good luck homie!

most times the promoter gets every body together to talk about these things like music selection or dj booth manors. or more of what i see is the promoter will higher djs that play within a certain genre for the night like dirty dutch to electro to trap and end with dubstep and not in that order per se

The Black Rag, post: 36511, member: 7330 wrote: None taken and to be honest i understand your position on this.Although when i think about it if i came in to a store where someone like you described worked i’d probably make sure that store goes broke.I respect your opinion on this it’s just as valid as anyone elses, but think about it some more.Is the customers job to tell the clerk exactly what he wants right down to the serial number of the box,or is it the clerks job to make sure the customer has a good expirience whilst shopping and has the will to come back and shop again?

Thing is i really don’t think this guy was just having fun.Mainly because, and tell the trueth here,if a customer came in and yeah at first you might be confused by the DJ splitter cable, and by the way i think you’re taking the piss outa this as i’m sure you know what the term DJ spliter cable refers too since Phil him self uses the term on more then one occasion, but after the customer actually explains that he needs a 1/4 male stereo to two 1/4 female mono Y cable, you wouldn’t look at the guy with a blank face and go”Wha?”.That’s part one of the reason i know this guy wasn’t just having fun.Part two is that about 2 months prior to that i bought my Numark Mixtrack in the same shop from that same clerk, and this guy didn’t even know what a midi controller was and he ended up having to call his bosses son, who’s also a DJ,to ask what it was that i was asking about.

wow i see your point on his incompetence. i would really not have fun to the point to make you feel stupid or disrespected but i drill you with many leading questions so i can best fit your needs. i was just on a rant earlier because i have worked that retail side and just personably, it kind of erked me when people came in asking such a broad question. for example, think about the biggest hardware store in your country and the go and ask them for a bolt. or a screw. what would you think? do you know how many types of screws or bolts there are? but i take your point about making the hole customer experience good and all but come on man, give me a little more info than just a dj splitter. maybe its a common thing where your from but a dj splitter to me means like 100 well maybe 10 different things ya dig?. just my 2 pennies 😉

wait, if you came to me and i worked at a music shop and all you asked for a splitter cables, id probably give you the hassle too. what kind of splitter? duh? maybe he was having fun with you thinking here goes another noob not knowing what exactly what he wanted. so id make you go through loops and bounds so next time you need an rca splitter, usb splitter, xlr splitter, id wait till you educated yourself. but wait! do you need a rca to xlr splitter, xlr to 1/4 inch spitter etc etc. o wait! do you need a xlr male to xlr female, 1/2 to rca omfg it goes on bro. come on. so u found it. good on you. btw what are dj splitter cables anyways? or maybe my 15 years of djing and my 3 nights a week residents ive missed this. Please someone enlighten me or teach me the ways. im sorry if you think im being too hard on you but if you are in a rush, need it on the asap, please know what you are looking for by nomenclature. because if not id have 8 hours to play around to make my day go by faster with my dry humor but also educating my customers to be specific to chose the exact cable you need to choose from the over 1000 different types i have in my inventory. thats all. i love you bro! no disrespect meant. cheers!
