It’s illegal to upload music without the artist’s permission. That being said people upload mixes all the time. I use Mixcloud, the artists are supposed to get paid from there.

Are you saying you download torrents? No one should do that for many reasons. Support the artists and keep it legal.

No name djs shouldn’t whine about clubs having no name djs. Support each other guys. Besides, the bigger names aren’t necassarily better.

It’s the same, just the notations are different. It’s all based on music theory.

I don’t do any scratching at all. So when using the volume faders, what level do you bring the incoming track on?

I usually bring in a new track around 7, but it really depends on the track and the mix. It could be anywhere from 4-10. Remember to lower the volume of the first track according to how much you raise the volume of the second track that way you keep the overall volume roughly the same as stated above. When I have both tracks playing full I have the volumes around 8 for each channel (you could use the gains for this if you choose but I don’t usually). I’m pretty hungover this morning so if that doesn’t make sense let me know and I’ll try to explain better.

I bet they would be less hostile if they got to know you and saw you at these parties on a regular basis.

I would recommend using the volume faders instead of the crossfader for full control over this. I’ve never used a crossfader that is as smooth as I would like in this regard.

That’s what I was wondering. I’ve seen hostile crowds at house parties but never underground raves.

Have someone on the floor keep an eye on it for you or go check it yourself periodically. Bartenders and bouncers would be happy to help you out.

Having a party get shut down is not the best experience in the world and I say that from experience. Legal is the way to go.

Exactly. It’s all subconscious, you don’t even think about it, although if someone asked what bar the track was on you could probably tell them without even thinking about it. I’ve been djing more than 15 years, trust me you’ll quit consciously counting.

Go to your settings and disable auto gain. Now you have to adjust it on your own because not all tracks are the same volume.

You’ll have to buy the tracks individually. Never mix from a mix cd.

    P.S. Welcome to the forums!

I completely disagree with this statement, the rest is spot on. When done poorly everyone can tell, when done well they don’t have a clue. I’ve played entire sets that were pre-planned because the crowd was feeling the vibe and no one but me knew the thing was planned. If you know your crowd and you play underground dance music you can get away with this often. You always have to be willing and able to change direction if the crowd seems to want something different but not always.
