I have to disagree with this line of thinking a little bit. I see it and hear it from all over the place. The way I see it is the promoter needs to take some responsibility for the entertainment. Look at it like this, if you’re hired to minimal techno by the promoter then you’re going to show up and play minimal techno. You’re job is to judge the time of night, energy level of the venue, etc. in order to pick the correct minimal techno tracks for that particular place and time. But, if a promoter hires you to play minimal techno and then draws a crowd that wants to hear top 40, you’re not going to be prepared for that and nor should you be. The promoter didn’t do his job in matching the entertainment to the audience. Think about it terms of bands if you prefer. A country bar wouldn’t book a metal band and if they were dumb enough to do that, would you expect the metal band to then play country music? In summary, I feel we all have a unique style of music and mixing that promoters need to evaluate based on their individual events instead of thinking, “let’s get a dj for Thursday night. Which dj should we get? Who cares they’re all the same, they just play other people’s records.” Incoherent rant over, hope you followed that.:)

I use VDJ so I didn’t sign up for the beta. Do they have any psytrance?

You should leave a dj who has experience in that style of music to play it. You play what you know. That’s my 2 cents.

I think since you already accepted the gig it’s a little late to up your price. You’re kinda of stuck with this one but remember what Menno said for future gigs of this nature. If you would like you could speak to them about your feelings about the music. In the end, you should probably just play what they suggest and make the best of it. Don’t take it personal.

In my experience the 2 sides of DJ and Producers don’t always match either – Great DJ, rubbish productions, equally great tracks, terrible DJ.

I think the point he is making in this article is that you can’t be a just a producer and make a living off it. You have to go out and do some sort of live show (djing or whatever) in order to make a living. Which means a great producer can’t focus on his productions because he is busy preparing for shows instead working in the studio where he is really talented. I also believe that you can’t become an international dj without being a producer (which wasn’t always the case) so mediocre productions are flooding the market in an attempt to promote oneself. I will agree that there is plenty of good music if you look in the right places.

Just messing with him Terry. Besides, I think this thread would be a lot more interesting if we discussed what we remember as being urgent when we were 15.;)

Anyway, this website has an awesome guide to controllers. Just like the site on facebook. It’s explained in this blog entry.

Beatport (or wherever you like to buy music) gift certificate. Blank CDs. Case of beer. That’s about all I got.

Don’t take any of it personally. I enjoyed the mix and I was genuinely impressed. I recently switched to digital and at first thought that auto gain would be awesome. I’ve now decided it’s a piece of crap and I’m never using it again.

I’ve got a mix up if you want to have a listen. There’s actually 4 on my mixcloud. The Lights Went Out is my newest and I’ve received good feedback from other sites on Faded Memories Parts 1 and 2, particularly 2. All tags are where the mix begins. Anyway, here’s the link to my thread if you’re interested, if not, no hard feelings.

Odd intro I agree. Second track sounds quieter than the first. Third track-like the transition, seems to get a bid loud during the mix. Fourth track-nice transition, can’t go wrong with Spastik. Fifth track-not my favorite transition, would have preferred you built the energy up more coming out of Spastik, not bad though. Sixth track-nice transition, really built back up like I was hoping you would a track earlier. Seventh track-another good transition and it keeps building. Eighth track- great transition. Ninth track-worst transition of the bunch, you took it down one notch though which is great. Tenth track-not a great transition either, I feel like you lot a little of the vibe here. Eleventh track-another sub par transition and I don’t think the track fits too well. Twelfth track-transitions ok, fits the last track well.

Good mix, really good considering how long you’ve been at it. My only issue really was how quickly you burned through tracks, but that’s more of personal preference. Listening to your deep house mix right now. First mix was good, second not so much. Keep doing what you’re doing, I’d gladly dance to you in a dirty warehouse.

I guess they’re a pretty good deal. I would suppose the label picks the winner since the grand prize is getting the track released. And with that being the case I would assume you would do better to do a much more abrasive clubby track. Although I know absolutely nothing about Seven Lions or the original track.

I’ll go with Tool-“Third Eye” but that’s really an impossible question to answer

The test for infringement is whether the sample is “substantially similar” to the original.

I pulled the above quote from one of the sources below. Both links provide easy to understand explanations of copyright laws as it pertains to musicians. There were quite a few lawsuits in the 80s when sampling in hip hop started to infringe upon other musicians rights. Anyone remember Vanilla Ice’s “Ice, Ice Baby” hook?

I thought you could run a turntable through the x1 but I don’t own one so I’m not sure. I’ve a Numark N4 so that I can hook up 2 turntables while also having 2 decks for digital. It works seemlessly and I can switch back and forth on the fly and always have 4 decks available if I want them. I’m sure there are several other controllers that do some version of the same thing. Someone else will have to confirm or deny the x1’s capabilities though.
