Do you use iTunes or similar to organise your collection?

iTunes is a slightly awkward bit of software to use but it will let you do this job properly – and organise your folder structure as well if you want it to. The advantage of iTunes is Traktor will be able to read it’s database so any playlists you do in iTunes are accessible from inside Traktor straight away.

I was simply giving an example of what I do. This does not mean you have to do the same – if my solution to this problem doesn’t work for you, then don’t use it. Simple as that.

But you did ask for advice and advice I gave..

If your solution works for you, then do it! No one here knows what is best for you. We only try to help..

Well for starters I wouldn’t use the windows folder system to organise my music. I let iTunes organise my music into Artist -> Album -> Tracks in one master folder on my hard drive. All my music is in that folder.

In Virtual DJ, I instead use a combination of the Virtual Folders and iTunes Playlists to organise my tracks – this prevents lots of duplicates if tracks fit into more than one category for example.

I don’t think it is possible to simply hide windows folders within the browser within VDJ.

I would plan on taking twice as much music as I need!

So for 17-02 that’s a 9hr Gig. Average 3 mins a track, call it 180 tracks to fill the time. So I would take double that – 360.

That’s not actually that many tracks when you think about it.

I wouldn’t plan on playing two versions of the same track though – nothing wrong with it if that’s the way the gig goes (and by the time you are several hours in people won’t remember what you played at the start anyway) but I would try not to..

I definitely wouldn’t repeat the same version of the track though. Even if requested 🙂

My top advice for a gig this long wouldn’t actually be anything to do with your music… More to do with you – make sure you eat plenty, drink plenty (not necessarily alcoholic!!) and keep yourself going. This is a long gig and it will take a lot out of you. Don’t just keep going on the adrenaline because it will stop at some point and then you will just collapse – Not Good!!

Despite all that though – enjoy it 🙂

And I’m on the other side of that discussion deathy..

I got an iPad mini at xmas – currently this replaces my now dead iPod Touch 4 – which died a steady death about a month ago after slowing down to a halt. No fault of apple, or the device. Just technology moved on. It physically couldn’t run most apps anymore.

The iPad will now be my DJ backup. I’ve put DJay 2 on it, synced all my playlists up and it’s awesome. It just works. And that’s what Android is missing. The amount of things in Android that can go wrong is immense – and I don’t like that any app can get to the crucial system stuff you rely on.

My Windows Phone is equally as locked down as the iPhone (apart from it likes talking to my laptop, unlike my iPod did..) – no access to system stuff, it just works and I haven’t had any issues with it in 4 years.

The Android I had before that however needed 4 resets in 6 months just to stop it grinding to a halt. It wasn’t an expensive handset, but it wasn’t cheap either. I wouldn’t expect it to be that bad…

Whether Apple do or don’t ditch the jack, they would be stupid not to release an adapter (or someone else will make one…) so you can still use your headphones with it if they do. I can’t see a world anytime soon where 3.5mm jacks become obsolete – and Apple won’t be the company that drives it if it does. That’ll be the headphone manufacturers. Such an adapter wouldn’t be hard to make – the pins will still correspond to the terminals we still use now as they did with the 30 pin connector..

There is a future for the jack plug yet..

Have a look at Manufacturer reburbished PC’s – I bought my Dell from Dell themselves 4.5 years ago now and it’s still going strong. I think I paid just under £400 for a 2nd Gen i5, 8GB Ram, 500GB HDD laptop – which was highish end at the time..

This one (from a quick search) could be perfect: http://outlet.euro.dell.com/Online/SecondaryInventorySearch.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=dfh&cs=ukdfh1&puid=b8e49e9f

Lots of bargains out there, just not from Argos..

Is that the DJ mixers or the Small Format/Large Format PA mixers deathy?

I’ve never heard anything negative about A&H before now..

Also – get a mixer from a well-known manufacturer.. It is much more likely not to colour the sound like some cheaper mixers do.. And avoid Behringer mixers.. I have had bad experiences with them (small things.. electrocution, changing the volume on its own…) and so have others.

I would recommend Yamaha (their new MG06 or MG10 models look perfect for you), or Allen and Heath/Mackie/Soundcraft etc..

It is well documented (and acknowledged by Serato themselves) that Serato has compatibility issues when run on AMD processors..

Read this article from their website for more info: https://support.serato.com/hc/en-us/articles/202553000-Problems-with-PCs-using-AMD-processors

Also – I would make sure that you either re-install a clean version of windows on your new laptop, or at the very least uninstall any of the software that came pre-loaded (such as any Beats audio “Enhancements” which will just get in the way when setting up audio interfaces etc..)

Well you seem almost convinced that the Denon is for you – I would go for it – loads of people use it and love it.

The only other solution I could see working is using a DVS enabled mixer (A&H do a couple of Xone ones which do that I think) and then using a pair of single deck controllers as well as your record decks to control the 4 decks..

Also, be careful which Denon it you are buying.. There are 2 now – the Mk1 and the Mk2 (Surprisingly enough..) and they are quite different underneath in terms of hardware features but almost identical on the surface..

    Okay so a few questions..

    1. Budget?

    2. Expected Audience? (Age/Music Tastes)

    3. Number of people?

    4. What have you got already?

I don’t think you need a Traktor supported sound card for Traktor anymore Vintage – only for DVS, not for normal playbacl..

I have a mate who uses a Behringer 302USB as his mixer and USB interface for some events several times a week and it works without issue on his Mac – I believe he does set up an aggregate device so he can use the headphone socket on his mac for his headphones though..

To the OP – I’m going to echo what has already been said.. Don’t buy Non-NI gear now for use with Traktor.. I can almost guarantee that in a couple of years it will be unsupported and you will end up buying the NI kit anyway..

    +1 to everything Vintage said..

I would add that watts unfortunately isn’t an accurate measure of speaker performance since the invention of Class-D amps.. When we used to use Class A/B amps, more watts pretty much did mean more volume. However, I would now look at the SPL output (RMS Ideally, but normally only Peak is quoted – Yes, you get RMS and Peak Volume measurements as well as RMS and Peak Power measurements. Note the difference…)

Just to make everything even more confusing, some manufacturers quote true “Sine RMS”, whereas others quote “Program RMS” – both are RMS measurements but the Program will be double the Sine value (ish) when quoting power values as well..

At one event I DJ at regularly, we fit around 800-1000 people in our main room.. In there we use 10 active tops (A mix of QSC and Yamaha), 2 subs (QSC) and then we patch into the venue’s subs (Logic Systems) as well to give us a little extra bottom end.. In total it’s about 16,000W RMS from the sound system.. And that fills the room. I wouldn’t want anything less though..

I haven’t heard of any issues.. I haven’t upgraded though and I probably won’t. It seems every other iTunes update is worth doing at the minute..
